Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst check what the page actually runs: some “Windows 98” sites recreate the desktop in a web page, while others use an emulator that can run Windows 9x. If it is a js-dos v7 player, try its touch controls, virtual keyboard, pointer controls, and fullscreen option. These controls are specific to the player and may be hidden by the site hosting it.
Check whether it is a simulation or an emulator
The name “Windows 98 emulator” does not guarantee that a page boots Windows 98. Desktop98, for example, describes its desktop and apps as a recreation made with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, not a full operating-system emulator. It says its DOS games run through js-dos, but that does not make the recreated desktop a Windows installation. Desktop98
By contrast, js-dos advertises Windows 9x support through DOSBox-X. That product-level support does not confirm that a particular hosted page includes Windows 98, or that its controls and configuration are exposed to visitors. js-dos overview
| Approach | What runs | Mobile setup | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser simulation, such as Desktop98 | A web recreation of the Windows 98 look and selected apps. | Use it like a web app; the site’s own layout and controls determine how it behaves on a phone. | It does not boot a full Windows 98 installation. Desktop98 |
| Windows 9x through an emulator frontend, such as js-dos | js-dos advertises Windows 9x support through DOSBox-X. js-dos overview | js-dos v7 documents touch-mapped controls, virtual keys, pointer controls, and fullscreen. | The version, bundle, OS image, and device/browser compatibility vary; an overview does not establish that a particular page will boot Windows 98. |
Use touch controls in a js-dos v7 player
js-dos documents v7 as mobile-friendly, with virtual controls enabled by default on mobile devices. Look for the player control bar; an embedded or customized version may hide or change it. js-dos v7 mobile support

- Open the player controls. Look for the mobile control mode and keyboard toggle. The v7 mobile documentation describes mappings from touch actions to key presses and mouse events. js-dos v7 mobile support
- Enlarge the virtual controls if taps are difficult. The v7 player overview documents a control-size setting. Try a larger size, and rotate the phone to landscape if the game or desktop needs more horizontal room. The rotation suggestion is a practical adjustment, not a documented requirement. js-dos v7 player overview
- Switch to pointer mode when you need mouse input. The player documents mouse emulation and pointer controls. If the emulated cursor no longer lines up with your taps, use the pointer refresh or synchronization control if the player exposes it; pointer sensitivity settings may also be available. js-dos v7 player overview
- Enter text with virtual keys. Try the on-screen keyboard or mapped virtual keys before adding an accessory. A physical keyboard is optional and may be more comfortable for sustained typing, but compatibility depends on your device and input method. The js-dos documentation does not validate a particular keyboard model. js-dos v7 mobile support
- Use fullscreen if available. The v7 control bar documents a fullscreen toggle. If you cannot find it, the site may have removed or customized the control. js-dos v7 player overview
Check the player version before applying v7 advice
js-dos distinguishes its mobile support by version: its overview describes v7 as production and v8 mobile support as work in progress. The v8 mobile-support page says v8 can use v7 mobile controls while new v8 controls are being developed. A page using another version, a customized embed, or a different emulator may not present the same options. js-dos overview js-dos mobile support
If the emulator is slow or gets stuck
For Internet Archive’s EM-DOSBOX service specifically, its Help Center says the browser emulator uses substantial CPU and recommends a current browser. It says Firefox and Chrome work best for that service and also lists Safari as supported. This is service-specific guidance, not a current test or guarantee for other Windows 98 pages, browsers, or devices. Internet Archive Help Center: MS-DOS Emulation

- Check the site’s own help or player controls before assuming a js-dos setting applies; a recreated desktop, another emulator, or a customized embed can behave differently.
- If the controls or version do not match the steps here, identify the page or emulator name when seeking help. Without it, there is no reliable universal fix.
What to expect about saved sessions
js-dos documents save and load features, but that does not establish whether a particular hosted Windows 98 page preserves changes after you close it. Persistence depends on how that deployment is configured, so check the site’s own save or session options before relying on it.
