A believable regional accent starts with a character’s speech history and a specific community—not a handful of conspicuous sounds. Define where the character grew up and how they speak now, study several real speakers or a carefully chosen reference, select a small set of consistent features, then test those choices in emotional, connected dialogue. For a game cast, map accents across the world and review each language’s localization separately.
1. Define the character’s speech history
Before choosing a pronunciation, decide who the character is and which speech community shaped them. Establish their home region, family and community, social context, education, and exposure to other varieties. Consider what has changed over time: migration, work, military service, social mobility, or years away may influence how they speak. These are character-design questions, not rules that assign one accent to everyone with a particular background.
Starting with identity helps keep accent from feeling like a vocal costume. Dialect coach Chris Lang likewise recommends establishing who a character is and where they grew up before working on pronunciation. Lang’s guide to learning accents for acting also emphasizes listening to real speakers.
2. Choose a precise, defensible reference
If the character represents a real place, narrow the target beyond a broad label such as “British,” “Southern,” or “European.” Choose a regional and social speech model that fits the character. Listen to multiple speakers where possible: one speaker can be a practical anchor, but cannot stand in for everyone from a region.

For a fictional setting, decide which real-world speech materials are inspirations and how they relate to one another. Treat those inspirations as performance references, not as a complete representation of the fictional culture. A reference sheet should identify the chosen model and the character’s relationship to it, rather than simply naming a country.
Game productions have used deliberate region-to-variety mappings. The Final Fantasy XVI localization team described choosing different UK regional accents for fictional nations so that voice could help distinguish where characters came from. Side’s account of its game-performance work describes mapping varieties to regions in The Witcher franchise. These are examples of production decisions, not universal formulas for matching a real accent to a fictional place or social group.
3. Listen for patterns, not just signature sounds
Use conversational recordings as well as careful presentations. Interviews, storytelling, laughter, arguments, and other informal speech can reveal how a speaker’s voice changes with context. Listen for a connected system of features:

- Pronunciation: recurring vowel and consonant patterns.
- Prosody: pitch movement, intonation, rhythm, stress, pace, and syllable length.
- Connected speech: how words link, reduce, or shift at phrase boundaries.
- Conversation habits: pauses, common vocabulary, and habitual phrasing.
Lang recommends paying attention to rhythm, pitch, connected speech, and reductions as well as individual sounds. Copying only the most dramatic or recognizable traits can turn a performance into a caricature. A useful reference note describes patterns and examples in context, rather than presenting a list of exaggerated catchphrases.

4. Select a small, consistent feature set
Choose a manageable set of features that distinguishes the target model, then use each where it belongs. There is no universal correct number of features; the aim is a coherent voice, not maximal density. Let acting choices—such as emotion, status, intimacy, fatigue, and audience—shape delivery without making every line a display of the accent.
For written dialogue or actor notes, avoid spelling every word phonetically. Dense phonetic spellings can slow reading and make ordinary speech variation look like a collection of mistakes. Use readable dialogue, with concise pronunciation notes or a pronunciation guide where the performance needs one.

5. Test it in the game’s actual performance conditions
An accent that works on a word list may not hold together in a scene. Rehearse full lines and exchanges, including different emotional states, interruptions, exertion, quiet speech, and repeated short barks if the game uses them. In recording, brief lines may be captured in separate takes; a concise reference sheet helps preserve consistency across those sessions.
Production guidance can cover character specifications, audition listening, recording preparation, and collaboration with actors. The GDC session description on voice-over production identifies those topics, while voice director and dialect coach Keith Higinbotham describes gathering and analyzing samples, preparing actors, and directing them during sessions in this TVBEurope interview.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems6. Get informed feedback and revise
Ask a dialect coach or knowledgeable speaker to assess whether the target is recognizable, consistent, and free of distracting mixtures. Performers may not reliably hear their own accent while speaking; outside feedback can catch features that practice alone misses. If representation or historical accuracy matters, involve people with relevant lived or scholarly expertise early enough to influence the design.

Coaching is an optional production resource, not a requirement for every project. Lang describes speaker-based study and outside feedback, and Side’s production account illustrates the use of specialist speakers and scholars for historical-language work. In its Age of Empires IV example, Side reports sourcing expertise for ancient languages where recordings were unavailable, including temporary studios in Mongolia and Southern Turkey. That is a distinct research challenge from shaping a contemporary regional accent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Keep the cast and localization coherent
For a game with several regions, create a compact accent map that records each region, its chosen speech model, example characters, allowed variation, and reviewer. Check whether the story implies regional proximity, migration, shared history, or isolation, and make speech patterns fit those relationships. Avoid treating a set of accents as neutral decoration: performed accents can carry social and ideological meaning and affect player perception. Emily Villanueva and Astrid Ensslin analyze this issue through Cassandra and Leliana in their 2021 chapter on Dragon Age: Inquisition; an accent’s associations are not fixed or inevitable, so review the implications in context.
Revisit the design for each dubbed language rather than assuming an English accent map will transfer directly. In the Final Fantasy XVI interview, the French localization director said that version did not add regional accents, citing the delicacy of the choice and French voice-acting convention, while using linguistic inspirations in names. The Spanish localization director described conveying some characterization through speech and word choice where European Spanish voice-over was unavailable. Localization may therefore use different devices to preserve characterization instead of copying the original accent system literally.

A practical accent brief
A short brief can turn the design into something performers, writers, and localization teams can use:
- Character: home region, family and community, social context, and relevant life changes.
- Reference: the specific speech model and the speakers or recordings used to study it.
- Patterns: a few pronunciation and prosody notes, with examples in full phrases.
- Variation: what may shift with emotion, audience, fatigue, or time away.
- Cast map: neighboring regions and characters whose speech should share or contrast with this model.
- Review: who will assess the performance and how localized versions can adapt the characterization.
The brief should guide a performance, not prescribe an artificial voice in every sentence. Its purpose is to keep choices understandable and consistent while leaving room for the actor to communicate the character.
