You can run a 7 Days to Die dedicated server on Windows or Linux using the separate dedicated-server app (Steam app 294420) and SteamCMD. Install the server files, edit a copy of serverconfig.xml, allow the configured network traffic, then launch and test the server. This guide follows the setup coverage updated June 16, 2026; server settings and defaults can vary by build, so use the configuration file included with your installed version.
Choose self-hosting or managed hosting
With self-hosting, you control the server configuration and administration, but you are responsible for keeping the server process running, updating it, and arranging network access. Managed hosting is an alternative if you prefer a service to provide the server environment. The available setup guidance does not establish a best provider or support a price comparison.
Install the dedicated-server files
The dedicated-server tool is separate from the game client: the setup guide identifies app 294420 as the server and app 251570 as the base game. Its installation instructions cover Windows and Linux and use SteamCMD to install or update the server. Follow the current SteamCMD instructions for your operating system and the guide’s current installation steps rather than reusing commands from an older tutorial.
Make sure the server build or branch is compatible with the game clients that will connect. After an update, check the server and client versions again before inviting players.

Configure the server
Keep an unmodified copy of the serverconfig.xml supplied with the server files, then edit a separate copy. The official wiki’s configuration reference includes a sample for Alpha 20.5 b2, so treat it as background on the settings—not as proof that its sample defaults or property names match every current build. Use your installed version’s file and comments as the authority for available settings.
- Server name: Choose a name players can recognize.
- Visibility and password: Set the server to the intended visibility and use a password if you want to restrict access. Check the current file for the relevant options.
- Player slots: Set the player count for your group.
- World options: Choose the world settings your group wants.
- Port and network options: Note the configured port and protocol; these determine which network rules you will need.
The wiki’s example dedicated-server launch command shows how to specify a configuration file. Adapt that pattern to the command and file paths used by your installed build, and launch with the copy you configured rather than the untouched example file.

Make the server reachable
Players connecting from outside the host’s local network may need traffic allowed through the computer’s firewall and, if the server is behind a NAT router, the relevant configured ports forwarded to the server machine. The official wiki lists ServerPort 26900 as a default and documents visibility and network protocol settings. Because the reference is version-sensitive and requirements can depend on protocol and setup, check the installed configuration file and forward the ports it actually specifies rather than treating 26900 as a universal rule.
Local-only play does not require making the server reachable from the public internet. For remote play, configure the host firewall and router for the server’s actual network settings; a forwarding rule alone does not guarantee that every network arrangement will work.

Launch and verify the server
- Start the dedicated server using the selected configuration file.
- Review the startup output and confirm the server process starts without an obvious configuration or startup error.
- Test access from a device on the host’s local network.
- If players will connect remotely, ask someone outside that network to test access. A local test cannot confirm that firewall and router settings permit external connections.
If a test fails, check that the server is still running, confirm the port and protocol in the active configuration, and review the host firewall and any router forwarding against those settings. Also confirm that the server and client builds are aligned. These checks cover common setup areas; the available references do not establish a complete, version-independent diagnosis for every connection failure.
