You can’t set a single video to loop from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube’s native Loop control repeats playback for viewers on a regular watch page; it does not turn a video into a live broadcast. To send a repeating video as a live stream, use an encoder that can loop the source, connect it to your YouTube stream, and check the preview before going live.

Choose the right kind of loop

Approach What repeats Where it applies
YouTube’s Loop control Playback for the viewer A regular video or playlist watch page
An encoder-based live feed The video source sent by the encoder, if that encoder supports repeating it A YouTube Live broadcast managed through Live Control Room

If you want a viewer to replay an existing upload, use YouTube’s watch-page Loop option. On a computer, open the video, right-click the player, and select Loop. For a playlist, expand it and use its Loop control. These controls affect playback on the watch page; they do not start or control a live broadcast.

If viewers need to see the video as a live stream, the repeat has to happen in the source or encoder workflow. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes sending a feed to YouTube; it does not establish a single-video loop control in Live Control Room or verify that a particular encoder can loop one file.

How to send a looping video to YouTube Live

  1. Create or select a live stream. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go live. Use the Live Control Room’s Stream tab to set up the broadcast.
  2. Configure an encoder to repeat the video. Choose an encoder whose current documentation confirms that it can continuously repeat your video source. The location and name of that setting depend on the encoder, so check its instructions and test the loop before relying on it. YouTube’s documentation does not confirm this feature for a named encoder.
  3. Connect the encoder to YouTube. Enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key in the encoder, following its current setup instructions. The stream key lets the encoder send a feed to your channel; treat it like a password and do not share it publicly.
  4. Set the stream’s technical settings. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in the encoder. Use YouTube’s recommended bitrate guidance for the matching codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. Your upload connection needs enough sustained capacity for the selected bitrate.
  5. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check that the picture and audio are correct and that the video restarts as intended before selecting Go live.
  6. Monitor the broadcast. During the event, keep an eye on stream health and confirm that both audio and video continue. Test the full workflow in advance, especially if the planned stream will run for a long time.

Settings and limits to check before broadcasting

Bitrate, resolution, and frame rate

There is no single correct bitrate for every video. Match the encoder’s output settings to the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, then consult YouTube’s current recommended bitrate row for the selected codec and combination. A connection that cannot sustain the chosen bitrate can undermine the stream even if the encoder’s loop works correctly.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Ingest protocol

YouTube documents RTMPS and HLS as ingest options. Choosing a protocol does not add a repeat function: looping still depends on the video source or encoder. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP and has its own setup requirements, so use the protocol and configuration appropriate to your workflow.

Long broadcasts, DVR, and archives

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a promise that every longer stream will be archived. Its DVR guidance also says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. DVR lets viewers pause or rewind where available; it does not repeat the broadcaster’s video source. Check YouTube’s current guidance if your planned broadcast may exceed 12 hours, and do not assume that a long stream will have the same archive or DVR behavior as a shorter one.

Copyright and channel suitability

Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed to use the video and its audio in a live stream. A video that you can watch or upload is not automatically cleared for continuous rebroadcast. Review the applicable YouTube rules for copyrighted material and monetization, and do not treat looping an existing recording as a way around those rules. This workflow explains how to send a feed; it does not guarantee that a stream will be eligible for monetization or remain available.

How to choose an encoder workflow

YouTube identifies encoders as software or hardware that send a feed, but its official encoder list alone does not prove that a particular option can loop one video continuously. Before choosing one, confirm each item in the vendor’s current documentation:

Test the exact source, encoder settings, stream key, and intended duration before scheduling a broadcast. YouTube’s general encoder guidance does not establish product-by-product loop capability or reliability, so avoid assuming that a tool can do this until you have verified and tested it.

Troubleshooting a looping live stream

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The video plays once and stops The source or encoder is not configured to repeat, or its repeat option does not apply to that source. Check the encoder’s current documentation, confirm its repeat setting applies to the selected video, and test the full cycle before going live.
No incoming preview appears The encoder may not be sending to the correct YouTube stream, or its connection details may be incorrect. In the encoder, verify the stream URL and key against the selected stream in Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
The picture or audio is missing or incorrect The source, encoder output, or stream setup may not match the intended video and audio. Inspect the encoder’s selected source and output, then verify both picture and sound in the Live Control Room preview before going live.
The stream health degrades or the feed drops The connection may not sustain the configured bitrate, or the encoder may have lost its connection. Check stream health, compare the encoder settings with YouTube’s guidance for the chosen codec and output, and test the network under the expected streaming conditions.
Viewers cannot rewind, or the archive is unavailable DVR and archive behavior can differ for long streams. Remember that DVR does not loop the source; check YouTube’s current guidance for broadcasts that may run longer than 12 hours.

Does selecting RTMPS or HLS make a video repeat?

No. Those are ingest protocols; the repeat must come from the source or an encoder feature that supports looping.
