If photos look unfamiliar, it does not mean they reveal a more “real” version of you than the mirror does. A mirror shows a reversed, live, three-dimensional view; a photograph is an unreversed, fixed, two-dimensional image. Camera distance, light, camera height and expression can all change how a portrait looks. A few small adjustments—and comparing several frames—can help you find photos that feel more like you.
Why you may look different in a photo
A photo and a mirror show different views
You are used to seeing your face reversed in a mirror. In a photo, left and right are not flipped, and the moment is frozen rather than changing as you move. Kim Penberthy, a psychologist interviewed by University of Virginia News in 2025, describes the mirror as a reversed, live, three-dimensional image and a photo as an unreversed, fixed, two-dimensional snapshot. That contrast can make an ordinary photo feel unfamiliar. It does not make either view the single objectively true version of your appearance.
If it helps, flip a copy of a photo as a familiarity check. This changes only its left-right orientation; it will not change perspective, lighting or facial expression.
Distance changes perspective
When a camera is very close, features nearest the lens can appear disproportionately prominent. The Society of Photographers notes that perspective changes with the relationship between the camera and subject. Stepping farther away and reframing can produce a less close-up perspective; a longer focal-length option, such as a phone’s telephoto camera, may help if the device has one and there is room to move back.

No single focal length always reproduces how people see you. Camera distance, framing, the phone’s sensor and the way the image is viewed all matter. The 2014 paper “Camera Focal Length and the Perception of Pictures” concerns how focal length relates to picture perception; it does not establish a universal portrait setting for every camera or person.
Try a simple portrait routine
Use this as a starting point, not a formula. Compare the resulting pictures at their usual viewing size, rather than judging only a highly enlarged crop.

- Increase the camera-to-subject distance. Ask someone to take the picture from farther away, or set up your phone farther back and reframe. Use the main camera or a telephoto option if it suits your phone and space. Avoid moving in close just to fill the frame.
- Set a comfortable camera height. Keep the phone around a natural viewing height rather than forcing an extreme angle. Make small adjustments and see what looks familiar to you.
- Find clear, even light. Try soft window light or open shade. Turn slightly or move a little to see how the light falls; harsh or uneven light can change how facial and body shape appears.
- Change one thing between frames. Make a small shift in head or shoulder angle, relax, or vary your expression. Take several pictures instead of holding one rigid pose.
- Review and adjust. Look at the frames at normal size. If one feels closer to how you recognize yourself, notice what changed—distance, light, angle or expression—and try a few more with that adjustment.
There is no universal best side, lighting pattern or smile. The Society of Photographers’ portrait guidance emphasizes that lighting and perspective affect how a subject appears and that a single lighting pattern will not suit everyone. Canon Canada’s portrait advice likewise recommends observing a person’s natural mannerisms and keeping them moving between frames rather than locking them into one pose.
Taking a portrait by yourself with a phone
Prop the phone securely, frame the shot, set a timer and take a few test pictures. Google’s Pixel photography guidance recommends this hands-free approach and suggests using a telephoto option from farther away when the device offers one and the location allows enough distance. A stable stand or tripod can make hands-free framing easier, but it does not correct close-camera perspective on its own. You still need to place the phone far enough away and choose a framing that works for you.
