To log outgoing requests and incoming responses with Puppeteer, attach request, response, and optionally requestfailed listeners to the page before calling page.goto(). You do not need request interception for ordinary logging.

Log requests and responses before navigation

This ES-module example records the request method and URL, each response status and URL, and failures reported by Puppeteer:

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();

try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();

  page.on('request', request => {
    console.log('→', request.method(), request.url());
  });

  page.on('response', response => {
    console.log('←', response.status(), response.url());
  });

  page.on('requestfailed', request => {
    const failure = request.failure();
    console.error('×', request.url(), failure?.errorText ?? 'failure text unavailable');
  });

  await page.goto('https://example.com');
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Register listeners before navigation so they can observe the initial page request and early subresources. The Puppeteer network logging guide demonstrates listening to page request and response events. This example also logs the request method and response status.

Understand the request lifecycle

  • request fires when the page issues a request.
  • response fires when a response is received. Its status is available through response.status().
  • requestfinished fires after the response body has downloaded and the request completes.
  • If a request fails, Puppeteer emits requestfailed instead of requestfinished. request.failure() can be null, and its error text may be unavailable, so guard both cases as the example does.

An HTTP error status is not the same as a failed request. A server response with status 404 or 503 is still an HTTP response; it normally proceeds through requestfinished, not requestfailed. Log response statuses to spot these errors. See the HTTPRequest API, the failure() reference, and the PageEvent reference.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Redirects also appear as separate requests: the request receiving a redirect response finishes, and the browser issues another request to the redirected URL. Expect multiple request entries for a redirect chain rather than one record whose URL silently changes.

Filter the log and protect sensitive data

Request objects expose details such as URL, method, headers, post data, and resource type. Use them to focus output on the traffic relevant to your debugging task. For example, add a host filter to the request callback:

page.on('request', request => {
  const url = new URL(request.url());
  if (url.hostname === 'example.com') {
    console.log(request.method(), request.url());
  }
});

Or filter by type:

page.on('request', request => {
  if (request.resourceType() === 'image') {
    console.log(request.url());
  }
});

Do not write authorization headers, cookies, or sensitive request bodies into shared or persistent logs unless you have a clear need and appropriate protections. Redact secrets before storing or sharing diagnostic output.

Remove listeners when their scope ends

If logging should stop before the page closes, keep a reference to the named callback and remove it with page.off():

function logRequest(request) {
  console.log(request.url());
}

page.on('request', logRequest);

// Later, when logging is no longer needed:
page.off('request', logRequest);

Page is an event emitter; the Page API reference documents its event-listener methods.

Use passive events for logging; interception is for control

Approach Best for Trade-offs
Page events (request, response, requestfailed) Observing URLs, methods, statuses, and request lifecycle Simple logging without resolving or modifying each request
Request interception Changing, aborting, continuing, or fulfilling requests More handler complexity; unresolved intercepted requests can stall

For logging alone, leave interception off. Puppeteer’s network interception guide explains the control-oriented workflow: after interception is enabled, each request must be resolved unless it is completed using the browser cache. If multiple handlers may act on a request, account for whether interception has already been resolved with isInterceptResolutionHandled(). The API entry point is Page.setRequestInterception().

What page-event logs do and do not establish

These listeners report the page-level events covered by Puppeteer’s network logging documentation. Do not treat this method as proof that every possible operation from every browser context, worker, or service worker has been captured. If your debugging question concerns one of those contexts, confirm that the chosen instrumentation covers it rather than assuming page listeners provide exhaustive browser-wide network visibility.

Troubleshoot common logging surprises

  • No initial navigation entry: listeners may have been attached after page.goto(). Register them first.
  • A 404 or 503 does not trigger requestfailed: that is expected for an HTTP response. Inspect the response event and status code.
  • A failure has no useful message: request.failure() is nullable and may not include text. Keep the URL in the log and handle a missing failure detail.
  • A redirected URL appears as another entry: redirects produce a response for one request and a new request to the destination. Read the entries as a chain.
  • Requests stall after enabling interception: interception is not passive logging. Ensure every intercepted request is continued, aborted, or fulfilled, and guard against multiple handlers resolving it twice.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot or PDF rather than a Puppeteer network trace, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before taking the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.
