To sign in as an administrator, select an account that already has administrator rights at the sign-in screen; alternatively, an existing administrator can change another account’s type. The separate built-in account named Administrator is a different account and is usually disabled on a new installation.
There are two different things Windows calls an administrator:
- A normal user account that belongs to the local Administrators group.
- The separate built-in local account named Administrator.
These accounts are not interchangeable. The first is the usual account created during Windows setup. The built-in account is mainly intended for administration and deployment.
Sign in to an existing administrator account
If an administrator account already exists on the computer, you do not need to enable anything. Sign out of the current account or lock the PC, then choose the administrator account at the Windows sign-in screen.

- Press Windows + L to lock the computer, or select Start > your account picture > Sign out.
- At the sign-in screen, select the required administrator account.
- Enter its password, PIN, fingerprint, or other configured sign-in method.
Windows will sign you in as that account. If the account belongs to the Administrators group, it can approve administrative actions when Windows displays a User Account Control (UAC) prompt.
Being signed in to an administrator account does not automatically run every program with elevated privileges. Windows 11 normally uses UAC, so some applications and system changes still require you to select Yes at a consent prompt. Run as administrator elevates a particular application; it does not switch your Windows account or log you in as a different user.
Change an existing account to Administrator
You can change a standard user account to an administrator from Settings, but the action requires administrative authority. If Windows asks for administrator credentials, enter the username and password of an existing administrator. A standard user cannot grant itself administrator rights through Settings.
- Sign in to an existing administrator account.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Go to Accounts > Other user.
- Under Other Users, select the account’s flyout menu.
- Select Account options > Change account type.
- In the Account type menu, choose Administrator.
- Select OK.
Sign out of the changed account and sign in again. Its account type will then be Administrator.
Older Windows instructions often use Family & other users. Microsoft’s current Windows 11 support instructions use Other user in the Settings path and show Other Users as the section label, so the wording can differ between guides and Windows builds.

Create a new administrator account
If the account does not exist yet, create it first and then change its account type.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Other user.
- Select Add account.
- For a Microsoft account, enter the person’s Microsoft account details.
- For a local account, select I don’t have this person’s sign-in information.
- Select Add a user without a Microsoft account.
- Finish creating the account.
- Select the new account under Other Users.
- Choose Account options > Change account type.
- Set the account type to Administrator, then select OK.
The account can now be selected on the sign-in screen. Give it a strong password, especially if it will be used for system administration.
Enable the separate built-in Administrator account
The built-in Administrator account is different from an account whose type is Administrator. On a new Windows installation, Windows disables the built-in account after the end user creates an account during the out-of-box experience. Microsoft documents an upgrade exception: the built-in account may remain enabled if there is no other active local administrator and the computer is not domain-joined.
To enable the account, open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the UAC prompt or provide administrator credentials.
- Run the command net user administrator /active:yes.
Sign out or lock the PC. The account named Administrator should now appear on the sign-in screen. Select it and enter its password if one has been configured.

The command must run in an elevated Command Prompt. Typing the same command in an ordinary Command Prompt while signed in as a standard user does not bypass Windows security. If no usable administrator account exists, a standard account cannot promote itself with this command.
Check whether the built-in account is present and active
In an elevated Command Prompt, run net user to list local user accounts.

Disable the built-in account after use
Leaving a powerful account enabled unnecessarily increases the number of accounts that could be targeted. After completing the task, open an elevated Command Prompt and run net user administrator /active:no.
This disables the built-in account; it does not delete it and does not change the account type of your normal Windows user.

Why the built-in account behaves differently
A regular Windows account with the account type Administrator is still subject to UAC. Windows normally runs it with a standard token until an administrative operation is approved.

The built-in Administrator account has a different default UAC configuration. The policy User Account Control: Admin Approval Mode for the built-in Administrator account is disabled by default. As a result, applications launched by that account can run with full administrative privilege without the normal consent prompt. That is one reason not to use the built-in account as an everyday account.
What to do when there is no administrator account
If you are signed in as a standard user and no administrator account is available, you cannot use Settings or the net user command to give yourself administrator rights. Both the account-type change and the account-activation command require existing administrative authority.
Look for another account on the sign-in screen, contact the person who manages the PC, or use your organization’s supported recovery and account-management process. Avoid guides claiming that an unelevated Command Prompt command can bypass this restriction; that is not a supported Windows 11 procedure.

How do I log in as administrator in Windows 11?

How do I make my Windows 11 account an administrator?
From an existing administrator account, open Settings and go to Accounts > Other user. Select the account under Other Users, choose Account options > Change account type, select Administrator, and select OK.
Why does Windows ask for another administrator password?

The Bottom Line
