To load custom blocks from a Laravel endpoint into a GrapesJS editor, fetch the endpoint inside an async function, wait for the response JSON, then register each block with editor.Blocks.add(). In a plain browser script, either load Axios as a global before your custom script or bundle it with Laravel Mix; Node’s require() and bare ES-module imports do not work automatically in a classic <script>.
Why the posted code fails
require('axios')is a Node/CommonJS convention. A regular browser script does not definerequire.importsyntax requires an ES module or a bundler that resolves the dependency. A classic script cannot parse a bareimportstatement.fetch()returns aResponse, andresponse.json()returns a Promise. ReadingcustomBlocksbefore awaiting that Promise means you are trying to read the property from the Promise, not the parsed response data.awaitmust run inside anasyncfunction in a classic script. Do not use top-levelawaitthere.
Load blocks with native Fetch
This approach avoids an Axios dependency. It assumes your Laravel endpoint returns JSON in the shape {"customBlocks":[...]}; confirm that response contract in your application and adjust the property name if needed.
async function loadBlocks(editor) {
const response = await fetch('/pages/4/get-custom-blocks', {
method: 'GET',
credentials: 'same-origin',
headers: { Accept: 'application/json' }
});
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`HTTP ${response.status}`);
}
const payload = await response.json();
const customBlocks = payload.customBlocks || [];
customBlocks.forEach((block) => {
editor.Blocks.add(block.id, {
label: block.label,
attributes: { class: block.class },
content: block.content,
category: {
label: block.category,
open: block.category === 'Blog'
}
});
});
}
loadBlocks(editor).catch(console.error);
The response.ok check makes HTTP failures visible rather than treating an error response as valid block data. The response body must also contain valid JSON: response.json() rejects if parsing fails. If the request needs authentication or other application-specific headers, add them according to your Laravel route and session setup.
Use Axios if it is already available in the browser
If the custom script expects a global axios, make sure the browser has loaded Axios before it. In the Laravel GrapesJS script list, put https://unpkg.com/axios ahead of js/custom-grapesjs-tailwind.min.js. Then use the parsed data returned by Axios:

For a Laravel Mix build, another valid option is to import Axios in the Mix entry file and emit a browser bundle containing both the dependency and your loader. In that setup, use the bundler’s import workflow rather than expecting a plain browser script to resolve import { axios } from 'axios'.
Register blocks with GrapesJS
The block registration step uses GrapesJS’s Block Manager API: call editor.Blocks.add(id, props), where the ID identifies the block and the properties provide its label, content, category, and attributes. The example maps the returned block’s id, label, class, content, and category fields into that API. Ensure the endpoint actually supplies those fields, or change the mapping to match its JSON.

The grapesjs-tailwind project documents browser CDN, npm, and Git installation options. Its browser example initializes GrapesJS with plugins: ['grapesjs-tailwind']. The choice of plugin distribution does not change the need to load Axios before code that uses its global, or to bundle it with your application.

Choose the loading pattern that fits your page
| Choice | Use it when | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Native Fetch in a classic script | You want to avoid a separate HTTP-client dependency. | Put the loader in an async function, check response.ok, and await response.json(). |
| Axios browser global | Your page already loads Axios from a browser-ready script. | Load Axios before the custom script that calls axios. |
| Laravel Mix bundle | Your application builds JavaScript assets with Mix. | Import Axios in the Mix entry and emit a bundle; do not rely on unresolved bare imports in a classic script. |
Common fixes and checks
ReferenceError: require is not defined: remove the CommonJS call from the browser file; bundle the dependency or load its browser global first.Cannot use import statement outside a module: use a bundler, or load actual ES modules with a compatible module setup and resolvable dependency. For the classic-script approach above, do not leave a bareimportstatement in the file.customBlocksis undefined: verify the endpoint’s JSON shape and awaitresponse.json()before reading it. A variable holding the result ofresponse.json()withoutawaitis still a Promise.- No blocks appear: check the browser network response, confirm that the parsed array contains items with the fields used by the mapping, and ensure the code runs after GrapesJS has initialized and
editoris available. - Request fails: inspect the HTTP status and Laravel route/session requirements. The example uses a same-origin GET and sends no request body; pass query parameters in the URL if the endpoint requires them.
