Microsoft says this section is populated with fonts from an open document, but it shows only the 10 most recently used fonts—not a guaranteed inventory of every font definition in the file. To look for one specific font in desktop Word, use Find and Replace with a font-formatting criterion.
View fonts from an open document in Word for the web
- Open the existing document in Word for the web.
- Open the font picker from the text-formatting controls.
- Check Most Recently Used for fonts Word has listed from the document. Microsoft says the section is dynamic, displays the 10 most recently used fonts, and keeps theme fonts at the top. It is a quick reference, not a complete audit of every font definition in the file. Microsoft’s guide to the modern font picker explains the feature.
- If the picker displays indicators for embedded or missing fonts, use them to identify those cases. Microsoft notes that a missing font may be substituted for viewing while the font applied to the text remains unchanged; the substitute can affect the document’s design and layout. Microsoft documents these font indicators.
The modern font picker is currently available only in Word for the web and PowerPoint for the web. The fonts available to choose from vary between free users and Microsoft 365 subscribers, according to Microsoft.
Find a particular font in desktop Word
If you already suspect a specific font is used, desktop Word can search for text formatted in that font. A Microsoft Q&A response for Word 2010 describes using Find and Replace, expanding the additional options, and setting a font criterion under formatting. Select the font you want to locate, then run the search. This is a targeted search for a known font, not an automatically generated list of every font in the document. Word for the web includes Find and basic font formatting, but some advanced Find and Replace capabilities available in desktop Word may not be available online. Microsoft explains differences between Word in a browser and desktop Word.

Why Document Inspector will not list fonts
Document Inspector is intended to inspect hidden data and document properties; Microsoft’s instructions do not describe it as a font-listing feature. Microsoft also says Word for Mac does not have Document Inspector. See Microsoft’s Document Inspector instructions.

Choose the right method
- Want a quick view of fonts associated with an open document? Use Word for the web’s font picker and check Most Recently Used.
- Need to locate a suspected rogue font? Search for that known font using Find and Replace formatting criteria in desktop Word.
