If you want to connect identities, use the Xbox app or Game Bar account settings, or follow the Xbox sign-in prompt in a game that supports it. Saves and cross-progression depend on the individual game.
What linking Xbox and Steam actually does
The Xbox PC app lists Steam as a social network you can connect with, alongside Discord and Twitch. It also brings together access to Game Pass games and installed games from other PC storefronts. That library view is not a shared storefront: connecting accounts or seeing a game in the Xbox app does not move a purchase or subscription entitlement to Steam. Xbox PC app
Game Pass is a separate subscription. Linking accounts does not make a Game Pass game appear as owned in Steam, nor does it let you download it through Steam under your subscription. Xbox Game Pass
Connect your Xbox account with Steam
Menu labels can change between app versions, so treat these as likely routes rather than guaranteed current instructions. A Microsoft Community reply describes the Xbox app route; if the menus differ, look for account or social-network settings in the app you are using. Microsoft Community guidance

- Sign in to the Xbox PC app or Xbox Game Bar with the Microsoft/Xbox account you want to connect.
- In the Xbox app: open Profile & Settings > Settings > Account, then look for the Steam connection option.
- In Game Bar: press Windows+G, open Settings > Accounts, and look for Steam.
- If you are linking from a game on Steam, launch a game that supports Xbox account linking and follow its Xbox sign-in prompt. The game may ask you to confirm the connection.
- Before confirming, check that the Microsoft/Xbox and Steam identities shown are the accounts you intend to associate.
Not every game offers this sign-in flow. Microsoft’s developer policy says that, outside Xbox consoles, titles can choose whether to support account linking. Microsoft developer policy
Choose the right route for your goal

Will your saves or progress carry over?
Not automatically. Linking identities is not itself a save-transfer feature. Cross-progression, cross-play, and shared entitlements depend on whether the particular game implements them and how its publisher handles accounts and saves. Microsoft’s PlayFab documentation describes account linking as a capability developers can use; it does not guarantee that every game shares progress across platforms. Check the game’s official support page for its cross-save or cross-progression rules before linking or changing accounts. Also check whether a save is tied to the game profile, platform account, or a specific version of the game; those details vary by title.

If the link option is missing
- Make sure you are signed into the intended Xbox account in the Xbox app or Game Bar.
- Try the route inside the game if you are playing a title known to support Xbox account linking; some games handle the connection through their own sign-in prompt.
- If the game offers no prompt and the Xbox app has no Steam option, that does not mean you can transfer Game Pass to Steam. The feature may not be available for that game or app version.
- For save or entitlement questions, consult the game’s publisher support rather than assuming the account link will carry progress or ownership.
