There is no universal safe crawl-rate or requests-per-second setting. First identify which requests are straining your site, then apply the control that matches the source: Google’s temporary error responses can slow Googlebot during an urgent incident, while caching, endpoint-specific rate limits, origin protection, and added capacity address broader traffic.

Find out what is creating the load

Before changing crawl settings, inspect server access logs and Google Search Console’s Crawl Stats. Look at request volume, user agent, URL path, response status, latency, and whether requests are reaching the origin. Crawl Stats can help you review Google’s crawl activity and host availability; logs show which paths and request patterns are affecting your own infrastructure. See Google’s crawl budget guidance and Crawl Stats documentation.

Check for crawl traps and newly exposed URL patterns, such as combinations of filters, sort orders, or date-calendar links that generate many crawlable URLs. A sudden increase may also follow the addition of new sections or Dynamic Search Ad targets. Do not assume a user-agent label alone proves a request came from Google; confirm the source before basing an important block or throttle on it.

  • If Googlebot is driving the overload, use Google-specific diagnostics and incident controls.
  • If unrelated bots or ordinary users are responsible, Google crawl settings will not protect your origin.
  • If a specific application endpoint is the bottleneck, target that endpoint rather than throttling all traffic.

Reduce Googlebot crawl activity during an urgent incident

For a short-term emergency, Google documents returning HTTP 500, 503, or 429 to crawl requests instead of 200. Google says its crawlers reduce crawl activity when they encounter significant numbers of these responses, then increase it as errors subside. This affects crawling across the hostname, not just the URLs returning errors. A 503 or 429 response can include a Retry-After header to indicate when the crawler should try again. Read Google’s guidance on reducing crawl rate.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This is an emergency measure, not a steady-state rate limit. Google warns that keeping these errors in place for longer than roughly one to two days can negatively affect Search; URLs that repeatedly return availability errors may be dropped from the index. Restore normal responses when the incident passes, and monitor both host health and crawl activity.

If returning these errors is not feasible, Google describes an exceptional request process for sites experiencing unusually high crawl rates, in which the site names an optimal rate. Google says evaluation may take several days, so this is not immediate relief during an outage.

Use robots.txt to exclude content, not to throttle temporarily

Use robots.txt when you want to prevent crawling of particular pages or resources. It is not a temporary rate limiter for shifting Googlebot’s crawl effort, and Googlebot does not process the non-standard crawl-delay directive. Blocking a URL can also limit Google’s ability to process its contents, so consider the indexing and discovery consequences before excluding important pages. See Google’s robots.txt documentation and its crawl budget guidance.

Protect the origin from all request sources

For general traffic spikes, reduce the work that reaches your application and make sure requests cannot bypass the protections in front of it. These measures address different parts of the problem; none guarantees that a site will remain available under every surge.

Cache reusable content and restrict direct origin access

A CDN can serve cacheable content from edge locations rather than sending each request to the application origin. Configure the origin so users and bots cannot simply bypass the CDN and connect directly. Cloudflare’s origin protection guidance covers origin access, monitoring, traffic distribution, and waiting rooms.

Rate-limit costly or vulnerable endpoints

Set limits around a defined request class or endpoint where possible, rather than imposing a blanket limit that could affect every visitor. Cloudflare documents configurable match conditions and a default 429 response for its rate-limiting rules. AWS WAF offers rate-based rules that can block sources exceeding configured thresholds. See Cloudflare rate-limiting rules and AWS WAF rate-based rules.

Choose thresholds from observed traffic and the capacity of the protected endpoint; there is no broadly applicable requests-per-second value for every site. A rule can block legitimate visitors if many people share an address through NAT, or if a genuine surge resembles abusive traffic. Review the rule’s grouping behavior and watch for false positives.

Manage demand and add capacity where appropriate

A waiting room can regulate demand for a specific endpoint that may be overwhelmed. Load balancing can distribute requests, while additional or automatically scaled application instances can provide more capacity. AWS describes load balancers and overprovisioned or automatically scaled EC2 instances as approaches for sudden surges, including flash crowds. Scaling does not identify abusive traffic, so pair it with request filtering and origin efficiency where needed. Cloudflare discusses waiting rooms and traffic distribution in its origin protection guidance; AWS describes surge handling in its Reliability Pillar guidance.

Choose a control that matches the problem

Control Best use Scope and trade-off
Google emergency 500, 503, or 429 Urgent, temporary reduction in Googlebot crawl activity Broad hostname effect; extended use can harm Search visibility. A Retry-After header can communicate retry timing with 503 or 429. Google
robots.txt Excluding content or resources from crawling Not a temporary throttle; blocking may prevent Google systems from processing URLs. Google
CDN caching and origin restriction Reducing origin requests and direct-origin exposure Depends on content being cacheable and origin access being configured correctly. Cloudflare
WAF rate-based rules Controlling excessive request rates or protecting selected endpoints Thresholds and aggregation need tuning to avoid blocking legitimate users. Cloudflare; AWS
Waiting room, load balancing, or autoscaling Managing endpoint demand or distributing capacity Requires a compatible service and architecture; autoscaling alone does not distinguish abusive from legitimate traffic. Cloudflare; AWS

Verify the change and remove temporary protections

Compare the incident with a normal baseline. Watch origin request volume, cache behavior, response latency, error rates, crawler activity, and whether legitimate users can still complete key actions. Google Search Console’s Crawl Stats can help with crawler and host-availability signals; Cloudflare documents origin error alerts and passive origin monitoring in its origin protection guidance.

For expected legitimate surges, review WAF and DDoS settings for false positives; Cloudflare specifically advises tuning DDoS behavior when large legitimate spikes are expected. After the event, review and remove temporary limits, then test affected endpoints as a normal visitor. See Cloudflare’s DDoS protection guidance.
