GitHub does not document a single workflow-wide timeout-minutes field: per-job timeouts, platform execution limits, and concurrency settings govern different things.
Set a timeout for each job you want to cap
Add timeout-minutes under the job in your workflow YAML. GitHub defines it as the maximum number of minutes a job may run before GitHub automatically cancels it; the documented default is 360 minutes. See GitHub’s workflow syntax reference.

Choose a limit based on successful runs: allow headroom for ordinary runtime variation, setup, and slower runner conditions. Add the setting to every job you want bounded. A workflow can contain multiple jobs, and a job without an explicit value remains subject to GitHub’s documented default.
When a job reaches its limit, GitHub cancels it. A timeout is not a promise of graceful shutdown, completed work, or cleanup of every external process.

Job timeout, platform ceilings, and workflow duration are different
An author-set timeout cannot extend the platform ceiling. GitHub’s limits documentation states that GitHub-hosted jobs can run for up to 6 hours and self-hosted jobs for up to 5 days. It also sets a 35-day maximum for a workflow run, including execution, waiting, and environment approval time. These limits and applicable settings can change, so consult the current GitHub Actions limits documentation for your environment.

Use concurrency to manage overlapping runs
A job timeout bounds one job’s runtime; it does not stop multiple workflow runs from executing at once. GitHub allows concurrent jobs and runs by default. If the problem is duplicate or outdated runs competing for time, a concurrency group can control overlapping work. See GitHub’s concurrency documentation.

Check the pending-run behavior before enabling a group: by default, only one run in a concurrency group can remain pending. When a newer run becomes pending, it cancels the previous pending run unless queueing is configured. This is a separate cancellation behavior from a job reaching timeout-minutes.
Understand what timeouts do—and do not do—to usage
A timeout can limit how long a particular job runs, but it does not by itself cap monthly spending. Usage also depends on how many runs and jobs execute, runner type, applicable minute multipliers, storage, plan allowances, and account settings.

GitHub says standard GitHub-hosted runner usage is free in public repositories, and self-hosted runner usage is free. Hosted jobs in private repositories consume plan minutes and may be billed after included allowances. See GitHub’s Actions billing documentation for the rules that apply to your plan and account.

Open a job in that run to review its execution time in the run interface.

For private-repository hosted jobs, distinguish displayed job execution time from billable usage: GitHub rounds displayed billable minutes up to a whole minute and does not include minute multipliers in that displayed figure.
