Bed leveling and nozzle offset solve different problems: leveling or mesh compensation accounts for variation in the bed’s shape, while Z offset sets the nozzle’s height above the print surface. Use your printer’s model-specific calibration flow, then judge the offset by the printed first layer—not by copying another printer’s number.

What bed leveling and Z offset each do

Bed leveling may mean mechanically tramming the bed, probing it to create a mesh, or using both. These processes help the printer account for the bed’s geometry at different positions. Z offset adjusts the nozzle’s vertical distance from the surface. A printer can have a usable mesh and still need its first-layer nozzle height calibrated.

Names, sensors, firmware controls, and menu sequences vary by printer. Find your exact model and firmware in the manufacturer’s manual before homing, tramming, generating a mesh, or changing an offset. Prusa’s first-layer calibration guide, for example, describes its own supported models; its terminology and controls are not universal.

Prepare the printer and surface

  1. Identify your setup. Check the printer model, firmware, probe or leveling system, nozzle, and installed print surface. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the surface and calibration method.
  2. Make sure the plate is correctly installed. Remove debris from the contact between the build sheet and heatbed, and check that the sheet is seated, clean, straight, and undamaged. For the steel sheet discussed in Prusa’s Bed Level Correction guidance, Prusa recommends cleaning with isopropyl alcohol at 90% or higher and ensuring nothing is trapped beneath the sheet. Other coatings may require different care, so follow their maker’s instructions.
  3. Run the appropriate bed calibration. Mechanically tram, probe, or generate a mesh only as your printer’s manual specifies. Establish a sound baseline before applying any supported regional correction.
  4. Run the first-layer calibration or test pattern. Prefer the printer’s own procedure to estimating a universal paper gap. The calibration process accounts for the machine’s reference geometry; a number that works on another printer is not a reliable target.

Set the nozzle offset using the first layer

  1. Start the printer’s first-layer test using the prescribed filament and surface setup.
  2. Watch the extruded line as it prints. Adjust the Z offset in small increments using the control specified by your printer’s manufacturer. On Prusa’s documented Live Adjust Z controls, a more-negative value moves the nozzle closer to the surface; this direction should not be assumed for other firmware.
  3. Continue the pattern and inspect the result. Aim for a smooth, even layer in which adjacent lines meet, with no gaps or raised ridges. Avoid chasing a copied offset value: sensor position and machine geometry make the useful value printer-specific.

Prusa describes this visual approach in its first-layer calibration instructions and Live Adjust Z guidance. If your printer uses different controls, use its manual for both the adjustment direction and whether the setting is saved.

How to read the printed line

  • Gaps or a rounded, separated line: The nozzle may be too high. Lower it carefully in small steps, but first confirm that the surface is clean and installed correctly.
  • A smooth, evenly joined line: The nozzle is at a useful first-layer height for that setup. Stop adjusting when the layer is consistent.
  • A scraped, heavily flattened, ridged, or translucent line: The nozzle may be too low. Raise it in small steps. Excessive lowering can restrict plastic flow or damage the surface.

Distinguish offset problems from bed-shape problems

A global Z offset changes nozzle height; it does not correct every difference between the center, edges, and corners. If the first layer looks good in one area but differs elsewhere, check plate seating and flatness, then inspect or rerun the printer’s supported mesh or regional correction. Do not use a single global offset to compensate for a regional height variation.

On the printer families covered by Prusa’s Bed Level Correction page—MINI, MK3, and MK3.5—its regional correction feature is intended for fine-tuning after baseline calibration. Prusa documents a correction limit of ±100 µm and suggests adjustments in 10 µm steps. Those values apply to that feature and those covered families, not to other printers.

Troubleshoot a first layer that will not stick

If the line has gaps or does not adhere

A nozzle that is too high is one possible cause, but adhesion trouble is not proof that the offset is wrong. Confirm the plate is clean and correctly seated. If the calibration pattern’s shape looks right, investigate contamination, surface condition, print settings, bed or XYZ calibration, and under-extrusion rather than lowering the nozzle indefinitely.

If the nozzle scrapes or the line looks too thin

Raise the nozzle in small steps if the line is scraped, very flat, ridged, or translucent. Stop if extrusion is impeded or the surface is at risk; lowering farther to force adhesion can make the problem worse.

If only some parts of the bed look different

Check the sheet for debris underneath, poor seating, dirt, damage, or unevenness. Then use the bed mesh or regional correction supported by your printer. A regional difference calls for investigating bed shape and compensation, not repeatedly changing one global offset.

If you changed the nozzle or print head

Run first-layer calibration again after a nozzle change or major assembly change. The relationship between the nozzle, sensor, and machine reference can change, so a previous setting may no longer be appropriate.

Know whether an adjustment is temporary or saved

Offset persistence depends on the printer and the control used. Some Prusa models with a LoadCell automatically calibrate the first layer. On the models described in Prusa’s Live Adjust Z documentation, an adjustment made while printing is temporary, while a slicer Z offset applies to the G-code where it is set. Other printers may store adjustments differently. Check your model’s instructions before assuming that a live change will carry over to the next print.

When to recalibrate

  • After replacing the nozzle or making a major assembly change, rerun first-layer calibration.
  • After moving the printer or changing the print surface, recalibrate if the manufacturer recommends it.
  • If the first layer changes unexpectedly, verify plate seating and cleanliness, then rerun the relevant calibration before making larger offset changes.

Prusa identifies nozzle replacement and major assembly changes as recalibration triggers in its first-layer calibration guidance. Follow the corresponding instructions for other printer models.
