Gemini can place a regular call through the Android Phone app, or—on a more limited set of devices and accounts—call a business to handle a supported task such as checking availability or arranging an appointment. These are separate features with different eligibility, controls, and limits. Check which one you have before asking Gemini to call.
Choose the kind of Gemini call you mean
| Feature | What it does | Who can use it | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary Phone app calling | Places a call to a contact, business, or phone number using your device’s calling app. | Google documents it for Android phones and tablets with an active mobile plan, the Gemini mobile app, and permission for the Google app to access the Phone app. | You ask Gemini to call a recipient; the call is made through your device’s calling app. Google’s Android calling instructions. |
| Agentic business calling | Calls a business to handle supported everyday tasks, such as asking about hours or availability, getting a service quote, or booking or managing an appointment. | Google currently lists a US user aged 18 or older, a Pixel 11 with a US SIM, a signed-in Gemini mobile app, a Google AI subscription, the public beta Phone by Google app, the latest Gemini app, and English as the device language. Access is rolling out gradually. | Gemini reviews the task and the information it may share with you before calling, then handles the conversation while you can monitor or take over. Google’s agentic-calling instructions. |
For the agentic feature, meeting the listed conditions does not guarantee immediate access because Google says availability is rolling out gradually. Requirements can change; check Google’s current eligibility details before relying on the feature. A Pixel 11 alone is not sufficient.
What to check before authorizing an agentic call
1. Make sure the task is supported
Give Gemini a specific business task, not an open-ended instruction. Include the relevant date, time, preferences, and acceptable alternatives—for example, ask whether a restaurant has a table at a stated time or request a quote from a local service business. The feature is not for emergency calls, payments or other financial transactions, sharing sensitive personal information, or telemarketing. It is limited to US numbers, has daily limits, and uses your device’s mobile network and phone number; standard carrier rates apply. Google lists the supported boundaries and calling limits.

2. Read the call summary and check the number
Before the call starts, review the number Gemini plans to dial and the information it proposes to share. Google requires your review and agreement before an agentic call begins. Depending on the task, that information may include your name, email address, phone number, or other relevant details. If the number or details are wrong, do not approve the call.
#1 Best Overall
- Noise-cancelling microphone reduces room noise for clearer Internet calls
- Full stereo sound for your music, movies and games
- Rotating microphone boom can be worn on your left or right side
- Adjustable headband gives you a customized fit
- Works with Windows 10 or later, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Mac OS X 10.5 or later, Chrome OS, Linux Kernel 2.6 plus and iOS or Android devices
3. Understand what the business will hear
Google says Gemini opens every agentic call by identifying itself as a Google AI assistant calling on your behalf on a recorded line and stating your name. Google’s Gemini Apps Help puts it this way: “Gemini starts every call by disclosing that it’s an AI assistant from Google calling on a recorded line on your behalf, stating your name.” Google Gemini Apps Help, “Ask Gemini to handle your everyday phone calls”.
4. Decide whether to monitor or take over
You can cancel before the call connects, follow the live transcript or audio, and take over the conversation. While you monitor, your microphone is muted by default. Taking over unmutes it, and Gemini announces that it is leaving the call. Consider whether you are comfortable with the task being handled this way before you authorize it. Google describes the call controls.

How to enable ordinary calls through the Android Phone app
This setup is for direct calls through the device’s calling app, not the agentic business-task feature. Google’s documented prerequisites are an Android phone or tablet, an active mobile plan, the Gemini mobile app, and permission for the Google app to access the Phone app. Contact and call-log permissions can help Gemini identify whom you mean.
- Check the app and phone prerequisites. Use an Android phone or tablet with an active mobile plan, and install or open the Gemini mobile app.
- Allow Phone app access. Give the Google app permission to access the Phone app when prompted or in your device’s app permissions. Contact and call-log permissions are optional aids for finding recipients.
- Ask Gemini to call. In the Gemini mobile app, request a call to a contact, business, or phone number. Gemini uses the device’s calling app to place it.
- Review connected-app settings if calling is unavailable. Check Gemini’s Connected Apps settings and confirm the Phone app integration is connected. Google also provides a setting to control whether Gemini may place calls and send messages while the phone is locked.
You can disconnect the integration in Connected Apps settings. Some requests that rely on other Google services may not work when Keep Activity is off. Google’s setup and troubleshooting guidance for Android calling explains the integration and related settings.

Privacy and call records
For agentic calls, Google says it uses call transcripts to create summaries and show past calling activity in Gemini. A transcript and audio recording are saved locally in the Phone by Google call history. Google states that those audio recordings and transcripts are not used to train its AI models. These statements apply to Google’s documented agentic-calling feature; they should not be assumed to describe every call made through Gemini’s ordinary Phone app integration. See Google’s agentic-calling help page and the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.

Do not ask Gemini to contact emergency services. Google’s instructions for ordinary Phone app calling say to make an emergency call directly with the device’s calling app. The agentic business-calling feature also cannot make emergency calls. Google’s Android calling guidance.
