Yes—but the right setup depends on whether you want a donation attached to a Shopify order, a standalone payment link, or a dedicated donation form. Shopify checkout tipping lets customers enter a custom amount, while Shopify gift-card products do not let storefront buyers choose their own denomination.
Choose the right way to accept a custom amount

Decide first whether the contribution should stand alone or accompany a purchase. Also consider preset choices, minimum and maximum amounts, recurring donations, payment gateway support, currency, fee handling, and whether tax, shipping, or order details should affect the contribution. The platform documentation cited here does not establish a complete feature-by-feature comparison across those requirements.
Add a custom donation amount to Shopify checkout
Shopify’s online tipping feature allows customers to add a percentage of the order total or a custom amount. You can adapt its labels for donation language; Shopify gives examples such as “Donations,” “Add a custom donation,” and “Update donation.” The amount is entered during checkout in connection with an order, so this is not a standalone donation product.
- In Shopify admin, open the checkout settings and configure the online tipping options. Shopify documents up to three percentage presets or a custom amount field.
- Customize the checkout labels and description so customers know what the contribution supports. Use clear language for the title, custom-entry label, and update label—for example, Shopify’s “Add a custom donation” and “Update donation.”
- Save the settings, then test the checkout as a customer. Shopify says updates can take up to 30 seconds to appear; this is an operational note, not a guaranteed propagation time in every context.
- If your store uses an offsite payment gateway, test a complete transaction. Shopify warns that some gateways might not recognize the tipping line item.
Shopify checkout limits and payment restrictions
- A custom tip cannot exceed USD 1,000, and customers cannot tip more than 100% of the order total.
- The tip is calculated using the cart subtotal before taxes and shipping, but it becomes part of the order total and is subject to card or third-party transaction fees.
- Tipping is unavailable with Shop Pay Installments and with carts that contain a subscription selling plan. Shopify also says the Subscription API does not support tipping.
Why a Shopify gift card is not a custom donation product
Shopify gift-card products use denominations selected by the merchant. The product denomination must be greater than zero and can be set up to USD 10,000 or the local-currency equivalent; Shopify says that limit cannot be increased. Customers cannot enter an arbitrary denomination on the online storefront.

If a buyer wants a value that is not listed, Shopify documents a draft-order route: create and send an invoice for the requested value, then create the custom-value gift card after the invoice is paid. That process provides store credit redeemable for goods or services; it should not be presented as a charitable contribution unless that matches the merchant’s actual use case.
Use a payment link or dedicated donation form for standalone giving
Stripe Payment Links
Stripe’s Payment Link API supports a customer-adjustable unit amount through custom_unit_amount, with optional minimum, maximum, and preset values. This establishes a flexible payment-link pattern, not a particular account’s availability, dashboard steps, or donation-compliance setup. Check the current API behavior and your account configuration before building around it.

GiveWP’s tutorial describes enabling a custom amount in a donation form by navigating to donation options, selecting multi-level donation, and enabling a custom amount. Because the tutorial is several years old, treat it as evidence that GiveWP has presented this capability—not as confirmation of current labels, setup steps, plan availability, or gateway support.

Test the donor experience before publishing
- Make clear whether the payment is a donation or a purchase of store value.
- Check that the amount field, currency, and any minimum or maximum match the intended experience.
- Run a complete test using the payment methods and gateways customers will use; for Shopify offsite gateways, verify that the contribution appears and is processed correctly.
- Review how fees apply and whether the contribution is included in the displayed order total.
- If recurring donations are required, confirm support for that specific platform, gateway, and payment flow; the capabilities described above do not establish recurring-donation support across all options.
