Venmo does not describe a setting that disables Purchase Protection for every payment. For an eligible payment to a personal profile, you can leave the purchase toggle off before sending. Once a payment is sent with the purchase designation, Venmo says it cannot be removed.
How to leave Purchase Protection off for one payment
- In Venmo, tap Pay/Request and select the recipient’s personal profile.
- Enter the amount and payment note, then tap Pay.
- On the next screen, look below the payment method for the purchase toggle.
- Leave the toggle off if you do not want to identify the payment as a purchase, then review the details before sending.
The toggle may not appear for every payment. Venmo says that if it is absent, the option is unavailable for that particular payment. What to do if you already sent the payment
Venmo says a payment cannot be untagged or recategorized after the sender identifies it as a purchase. If you selected the option by mistake, contact Venmo Support through the app; Venmo says Support may be able to return the fee. A purchase dispute will not remove the designation. Payments are generally delivered to the recipient right away and cannot be canceled once sent. Some pending-payment situations have separate handling, so check the transaction status and Venmo’s cancellation instructions rather than assuming a completed payment can be reversed.

When not to turn the purchase option off
If you are buying from someone you do not know, turning the purchase designation off can leave you without the protections that may apply to an eligible purchase. Venmo advises buying from strangers through an approved business account or marking an eligible payment to a personal profile as a purchase. Coverage is not automatic for every payment or item. Read Venmo’s personal-profile purchase guidance and its scam guidance before paying.
If the purchase itself went wrong
A problem with an eligible purchase is separate from accidentally tagging a payment. Venmo encourages buyers to work directly with the seller first. If an item did not arrive or a service was not provided, open the transaction from the Me tab, tap Need Help?, choose the issue, provide the requested information, and submit the report. Venmo investigates eligible purchases; a refund depends on that investigation. The dispute process does not undo a purchase tag. More details are in Venmo’s purchase instructions.

Understand the possible fee
Venmo’s FAQ illustrates the recipient fee with an example in which $98 is received on a $100 payment tagged as a purchase. The FAQ’s year is not stated, so treat that as an illustration—not a guaranteed current fee or a rate that applies to every transaction. Check Venmo’s FAQ for its current details.
