You cannot tame a sheep as a pet in Minecraft. To make one follow you, hold wheat and lead it to an enclosure; use wheat on two sheep to breed them, and use shears to collect wool.
Can you tame a sheep in Minecraft?
No. Sheep are passive mobs, but Minecraft’s mobs overview does not describe them as tameable pets. You can lead sheep with wheat and breed them, but feeding wheat does not tame them.
How to make a sheep follow you with wheat
- Get wheat. Hold it in your hand and approach a sheep. Minecraft says nearby sheep are attracted to wheat and follow while you do not go too far away; it does not specify an exact distance. See Minecraft’s wheat guide.
- Walk the sheep to your destination. Keep the wheat selected as you guide it into a pen or toward your farm. Put it in an enclosure if you want to keep it nearby.
- Secure the enclosure. Once the sheep is inside, close the pen so it stays in the area. Wheat is a way to lead it, not a permanent follow command.
How to breed sheep
Use wheat on two sheep to breed them and produce a lamb. This is a separate action from leading them: wheat attracts sheep when held and can also be used to breed them. Minecraft describes these uses in its wheat guide.

How to collect wool and make it grow back
Use shears on a sheep to collect wool. Minecraft’s wool article gives a yield of one to three wool blocks per shearing. A sheep regrows its wool after eating grass. Java Edition 1.21.5 release notes also say sheep can eat short and tall dry grass to regrow wool; that detail is specific to the documented Java release (release notes).

- Make a sheep follow you: Hold wheat.
