Apply moisturizer first, sunscreen next, and makeup last. Sunscreen should be the final dedicated skincare layer before makeup, so it can be applied directly and evenly to exposed skin.
What order should you apply moisturizer, sunscreen and makeup?
- Cleanse your skin.
- Apply any prescribed medication or treatment as directed.
- Apply moisturizer if it is part of your routine.
- Apply sunscreen to exposed skin.
- Apply makeup if desired.
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) places moisturizer and/or sunscreen after medication or treatment, followed by makeup. Its sunscreen guidance also says to apply sunscreen before makeup. AAD morning skin-care routine; AAD sunscreen guidance.
How to choose and apply sunscreen
Check the label
Choose a sunscreen labeled broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, and water-resistant. Water resistance matters if you plan to swim or sweat; follow the product’s label for its directions. No single texture or brand is best for everyone, so consider what feels suitable for your skin and the activity you have planned. AAD selection guidance.
Apply enough before going outdoors
Apply sunscreen before going outdoors and rub it thoroughly into the skin. AAD’s face-specific guidance is at least one teaspoon for the face. Cover exposed skin rather than relying on makeup to fill in missed areas. AAD application guidance.

Consider a tinted sunscreen
If you want complexion coverage in the sunscreen layer, a tinted sunscreen may suit your routine. AAD notes that tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide provides protection from visible light that can contribute to dark spots. Can moisturizer and sunscreen be combined?

Does makeup with SPF replace sunscreen?
No. Foundation or powder with SPF may add protection, but it should not be your only sunscreen: people may apply too little makeup to get the labeled protection. Apply regular sunscreen—or moisturizer with sunscreen—first, then use SPF makeup as an extra. Skin Cancer Foundation, 2025.

Applying sunscreen again over makeup can be difficult, and there is no single makeup-compatible method established by these sources.
