A UPS or other suitable battery backup can keep your home network powered during a power cut—but keeping Wi-Fi on is not the same as keeping internet access. Back up every powered device in the connection path, and remember that your provider’s network must also remain available.

What needs power for Wi-Fi and internet to work?

Your router creates the local Wi-Fi network. To reach the internet, it also needs a working connection to your provider. Depending on your setup, that means keeping one or more devices powered:

  • All-in-one gateway: The modem and router are combined in one device, so back up the gateway.
  • Separate modem and router: Both need power. If either shuts off, the internet connection or Wi-Fi may stop working.
  • Fiber service: A separate optical network terminal (ONT) may sit between the fiber line and your router or gateway. Back up the ONT as well as the router or gateway.

Check your provider’s equipment documentation or ask the provider which devices must stay powered. A battery on a phone or fiber system does not necessarily keep broadband internet working: some provider batteries are intended to preserve voice service, and other equipment may need its own backup. AT&T’s support guidance distinguishes the gateway from an external ONT, while NBN Co’s battery guide says separately powered devices such as routers need their own battery backup.

How to set up a UPS for your network equipment

  1. Trace the connection path. Identify every powered device between the incoming service and your Wi-Fi: gateway, separate modem and router, and any separate ONT. Confirm the required equipment with your ISP.
  2. Choose a UPS for the actual load and desired runtime. Check its usable capacity, battery-backed outlet count, output compatibility with your equipment, surge protection, and whether replacement batteries are available. A UPS may switch to battery automatically, but runtime depends on the unit, connected load, and battery condition. Extra devices drawing power reduce the time available.
  3. Plug every required network device into battery-backed outlets. A UPS may also have outlets that provide surge protection without battery backup; use the battery-backed outlets for the modem, router or gateway, and ONT as applicable. Brightspeed advises connecting its supplied modem/router and ONT equipment to the UPS.
  4. Test and maintain the backup. Follow the UPS maker’s instructions for testing and battery replacement. Brightspeed recommends checking backup equipment at least twice a year.

How long will a UPS keep the internet running?

There is no reliable universal runtime for a home router backup. Capacity, the power draw of all connected equipment, battery age and condition, and other connected loads affect how long the system runs. Use the UPS maker’s runtime information for your actual load rather than assuming a particular number of hours.

Provider-specific battery systems illustrate why runtime figures should not be generalized:

Provider system Published runtime and what it applies to
NBN Co optional connection-box power supply Approximately five hours with a working battery, including emergency reserve. NBN Co says about 40% of charge is reserved after roughly 3 to 3.5 hours; a reserve button can provide roughly another 1.5 to 2 hours. Separately powered equipment, including a router, needs its own backup. NBN Co user guide
AT&T PSI battery kit Four hours or more for certain AT&T Wi-Fi gateways with a single battery kit; an external ONT needs separate backup. The runtime depends on the configuration and device model. AT&T support guidance

These figures apply to the named provider equipment, not to a typical UPS or arbitrary router setup.

What if the provider’s network is also down?

A home UPS can power your side of the connection, but it cannot restore service if the provider’s network is unavailable or the line is damaged. Check your ISP’s outage status before assuming the UPS needs more capacity. Brightspeed warns that backup power may not guarantee service when an outage also affects the internet network.

  • ISP cellular failover: Some providers offer a configured 4G or 5G backup connection. Check availability in your area, compatibility, any fees, cellular coverage, and whether the failover equipment itself has backup power.

To conserve a phone or hotspot battery and data, limit video streaming, large downloads, and nonessential connected devices. AT&T’s outage guidance recommends reducing video and background activity.

Can an inverter or generator keep a router online?

An inverter or generator can supply power during a longer interruption or to more household loads, but it does not solve an ISP-side outage. Match the power source to the equipment and follow its instructions. Never operate a portable generator indoors: exhaust can expose people to dangerous, potentially fatal carbon monoxide. Ontario’s generator safety guidance says to use portable generators outdoors and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
