For banking, shopping, account recovery, or sensitive work, use your phone’s cellular data instead of public Wi-Fi whenever practical. If you do join a hotspot, confirm its name and sign-in steps with venue staff, switch off automatic network joining, and check that browser pages use HTTPS. Keep your phone updated, locked, backed up, and physically secure.
Choose the connection based on what you need to do
Public Wi-Fi is not automatically unsafe. The FTC says most websites now encrypt information, so public Wi-Fi is usually safe when the information is encrypted. But CISA advises against using open public Wi-Fi for personal business, banking, or shopping, and recommends cellular data for sensitive transactions when possible. These positions address different levels of exposure: ordinary encrypted browsing is not the same as entering payment details or high-impact credentials on an unverified connection.

Verify the hotspot before connecting
Attackers can imitate a legitimate airport, hotel, café, or other venue network. A familiar-looking network name or captive portal is not proof that it is genuine.
- Ask venue staff for the exact Wi-Fi network name and the correct login procedure. Do not rely on a name that merely resembles the venue’s.
- Follow the verified sign-in instructions. If the portal requests information or permissions that seem unusual, stop and check with staff rather than guessing.
- Turn off automatic joining for public networks, or remove saved networks you no longer need, so your phone does not connect without your choice.

Check the website, not just the Wi-Fi
For browser-based banking or shopping, check that the address begins with HTTPS and that the browser indicates a secure connection. HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and the site, helping protect data in transit. It does not verify that the site operator is legitimate: scam and phishing sites can use HTTPS too.
Use the bank or retailer’s known app or type its familiar address yourself rather than following an unexpected link. Treat suspicious texts, emails, links, and attachments cautiously, whether you are on Wi-Fi or cellular data.

Prepare your phone before you travel
- Install available updates. Update the phone’s operating system and apps before leaving, preferably while connected to a trusted network.
- Back up important information. Make sure a recent backup exists so a lost or damaged phone does not leave you without essential data.
- Use a strong screen lock. Set a strong PIN or password, and configure the phone to lock promptly when you are not using it.
- Review automatic connections. Disable auto-joining for public Wi-Fi and remove networks you do not need saved.
Limit physical and accessory risks
Keep the phone with you in public and secure it in your hotel room. When Bluetooth is not in use, turn it off. Avoid connecting the phone to computers or charging stations you do not control: a USB connection can let software on the connected computer interact with the phone in unexpected ways. Use your own charger and a power outlet when practical. CISA’s travel guidance covers these device precautions.

- Contact the bank or service provider through a known, official channel and follow its account-security instructions.
- From a different computer you control, change the affected account’s password and any other associated passwords that were reused.
- Review account activity and recovery details, and secure the phone before using it for further sensitive transactions.
CISA’s guidance recommends contacting the relevant provider and changing associated passwords from a different computer you control if an account is compromised.
