Adaptive charging may hold the battery around 80% and finish charging before it predicts you will unplug. That pause is intentional, not necessarily a fault.
What Adaptive charging does
On Chromebooks, Optimized charging is the setting that manages charging to help maintain battery health. Google explains that leaving a Chromebook at full charge for extended periods can reduce battery capacity over time. Optimized charging delays a full charge so the battery spends some time below 100%.
Adaptive charging is the pattern-based option within Optimized charging. It holds the battery around 80%, then uses predictions of when you usually unplug to decide when to charge to 100%. While it holds the charge, the Chromebook typically disconnects from power. The 80% figure is a product setting threshold described by Google, not a measured battery-life improvement.
Turn on Adaptive charging
- Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
- Select Settings.
- On the left, select System preferences, then Power.
- Turn on Optimized charging.
- Next to Optimized charging, select Change.
- Select Adaptive charging.
- Select Done.
These labels and steps are from Google Chromebook Help. Adaptive charging appears only if the Chromebook supports it and administrator policy allows it. On a managed Chromebook, availability or configuration may be controlled by the administrator.

Choose Adaptive charging or Charge limit
Optimized charging offers two choices. Select the one that fits how you use and charge the Chromebook.
| Option | How it behaves | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Adaptive charging | Holds the battery around 80% and predicts when to complete charging before you unplug. | A regular charging and unplug schedule, with a full charge when needed. |
| Charge limit | Caps the maximum charge at 80%. | A consistent charge ceiling when you do not need a full charge after every session. |
Google describes both options and their 80% behavior in its Chromebook charging guidance.

Why your Chromebook may stop at 80%
When Adaptive charging is holding the battery around 80% or above, the Chromebook may not be fully charged even though it is connected to power. Google says a notification appears while Adaptive charging is holding the charge. If you need a full battery now, select Fully charge now in that notification.
For a full charge every time instead, turn off Optimized charging in Settings > System preferences > Power. If the Chromebook is using Charge limit, the 80% ceiling is fixed rather than scheduled; change the choice under Optimized charging > Change if you want Adaptive charging to predict when to finish charging.

Adaptive charging is not Battery Saver
Adaptive charging manages how and when the battery charges. Battery Saver reduces power use while you are using the Chromebook. Google says Battery Saver can lower display brightness, turn off the keyboard backlight, enable Chrome Energy Saver and Android Battery Saver when applicable, and throttle the CPU. It is unavailable while the Chromebook is plugged in and turns off automatically when you connect power. See Google Chromebook Help on Battery Saver.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Adaptive charging can—and cannot—promise
Google gives the qualitative reason for Optimized charging: spending less time at full charge can help avoid battery-capacity reduction over time. Its documentation does not give a percentage increase in battery cycle life, a guaranteed number of extra months, or independent test results for Adaptive charging. Treat the feature as a charging-health measure, not a guarantee of a specific lifespan extension.
