If you reach a limit, you can wait for access to resume, switch to Flash-Lite when offered, consider a Google AI plan for higher limits, or use the separate Gemini API if you are comfortable with developer setup and metered billing.
Can you still use Gemini Flash and Pro for free?
Yes. Google’s Gemini Apps limits and upgrades page lists Gemini Flash and Gemini Pro as available without an AI plan, alongside Flash-Lite. That means free access is still an option; it does not mean unlimited use or guaranteed access to every model and feature.
Google says usage limits and model availability may change and can be affected by availability. Check the model selector and the current limit information in your account rather than relying on a fixed prompt count.
What to do when you reach a free usage limit
Try Flash-Lite if it is offered
Google says subscribers who hit their plan limit can continue chats with Flash-Lite. In Gemini Apps, select the model name in the prompt box to view or switch models. Flash-Lite may be suitable for continuing a conversation, but whether it handles a particular task well depends on the task.

Wait or adjust how you use Gemini
If you do not want to subscribe or move to the API, check the app again later and use the available model within the limits shown to you. Google does not promise a universal reset schedule or a fixed free allowance on the limits page, so avoid planning around an assumed number of prompts or reset time.
When a Google AI plan makes sense
A paid plan raises Gemini Apps usage limits and may include additional features. Google’s current plan documentation describes AI Plus as providing twice standard limits and AI Pro as providing four times standard limits. These are relative multipliers, not fixed prompt counts or a promise of unlimited use; check the current plan and limits information for the features and availability applicable to your account.

To compare plans, use the account’s country and current checkout details. Google says some plans are available only in certain countries, and prices and included benefits can change. Google’s plan-management guide explains how to manage a Google AI plan from Gemini Apps.
What happens when Google AI Pro expires?
Google says that when an AI Pro plan ends, you lose access to Pro chats and Pro-only features. Its plan-management guide also lists the loss of expanded Google One storage, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and other plan benefits. If you need to keep using a conversation or feature that requires Pro, review the plan’s expiration and renewal details before the subscription ends.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Gemini API an alternative to the Gemini app?
It can be, particularly for developers or people comfortable building a workflow around an API. The Gemini API is not the same experience as the consumer Gemini app: it has separate model availability, project-based rate limits, token-based pricing, and billing requirements. Google publishes a free and paid pricing structure and separate rate-limit information.

Google’s pricing documentation also distinguishes data use by tier: it says free-tier content may be used to improve Google products, while paid-tier content is not. Review the current terms against the kind of information you plan to submit.
