You can keep it working if you control the web address encoded in it: preserve that address and redirect it to the new page, or update the content maintained at that address. If you do not control the encoded address, create and test a replacement QR code, then replace or cover the printed one.
What changes when a QR code destination moves?
A QR code stores data in its printed pattern. A static code usually contains a URL directly, so moving or deleting the page at that URL can leave the code leading to an error. GS1 describes this risk for packaging: if the online resource is moved or deleted, the code can lead to a 404 (GS1 explanation of direct-link failure).
The useful distinction is between the printed code and the address it encodes. The pattern stays fixed; the destination can change only if the encoded address still works and someone with control of it changes what it serves or where it redirects. A QR service may provide that redirect, but then the code depends on the service remaining available.
If the old URL is yours, redirect it
Keep the old address active and point it directly to the closest equivalent new page. For a permanent page move, Google Search Central recommends a server-side permanent redirect, such as HTTP 301 or 308, when possible (Google guidance on redirects).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Choose the replacement page. Match the old page’s purpose: for example, redirect an old event-details URL to the updated event information, not to an unrelated homepage.
- Set a direct server-side redirect. Configure the old URL to lead straight to the replacement. Avoid sending it through several intermediate URLs.
- Test the exact old URL. Open it on a phone and confirm it reaches the intended page over HTTPS. Then scan the printed code and check the same result.
- Keep the redirect in place. Google advises keeping redirects as long as possible and generally for at least one year after a site move (Google guidance on site moves).
For a large site move, map each old URL to its corresponding new URL rather than sending every old link to one destination. Redirect chains add latency and can fail in some user agents, so point each old address directly to its final destination.
If a business or other physical location changes
For a location QR code, the printed code can remain useful if its encoded address is stable and you can update the page or redirect behind it. Update the destination with the current street address, hours, directions, and contact details. If the encoded URL is an old location page you control, redirect it to the current location page; if it points to a maintained listing, update that listing through the service that manages it.

GS1’s guidance favors directing people to relevant information rather than a generic or unrelated destination (GS1 guidance on connecting barcodes to related information). The exact steps for changing an address depend on the site or listing provider; the QR code itself does not update map information.
If you cannot control the encoded URL
If the code points directly to a URL you do not own or manage, you cannot alter its encoded value or redirect its destination. Generate a new QR code for a maintained page, test it, and physically replace or cover the old code. A sticker can work as a replacement label if it fully covers the old pattern without hiding nearby instructions. This replaces the printed code; it does not edit the original.

- Create the new code using the full, correct destination URL.
- Scan it with a phone before printing and verify that it opens the intended page.
- Apply the replacement label or replace the printed material, then scan again to check legibility and destination.
Make future print materials easier to update
For new signs, packaging, menus, or handouts, encode a stable URL on a domain your organization controls. Keep that address active and change its redirect when the content moves. This leaves the printed code unchanged while giving you control over the destination.
A managed dynamic QR service is another option: its code points to an address the provider routes to your current destination. Before relying on one for long-lived print, assess whether you can export or transfer the address, what happens if your account or the service ends, how it handles privacy and analytics, and what ongoing costs apply. A provider-controlled address can stop working if the service is discontinued or access is lost.

For products or locations using GS1 identifiers, a GS1 Digital Link URI can keep the identifier in the code while a resolver’s destination is updated. GS1 says the redirect can be updated without changing or reprinting the encoded URI (GS1-Conformant Resolver Standard). Its best-practices guidance likewise describes updating where a GS1 Digital Link URI redirects without changing packaging (GS1 QR code best practices). This is a standards-based approach for GS1 identifiers, not a way to remotely rewrite any arbitrary QR code.

Choose the right fix
| Situation | What to do | What remains unchanged |
|---|---|---|
| Printed code encodes a URL you control | Keep the URL alive and redirect it directly to the relevant replacement page. | The printed QR pattern. |
| Printed code encodes a URL you do not control | Create and test a new code, then replace or cover the old one. | Nothing about the old code’s destination changes; the physical code must be replaced. |
| New print or a planned reprint | Use a stable address on a domain you control, or assess a managed redirect service for portability and continuity. | The address printed in future copies can stay stable while its destination changes. |
| GS1 product or location identifier | Use a GS1 Digital Link URI and update its resolver destination as needed. | The encoded URI can remain the same. |
