Keep pets safe in hot weather by providing fresh water, shade and a cool indoor refuge; shifting exercise to cooler hours; and never leaving an animal in a parked car. Watch for abnormal panting or breathing, weakness, vomiting, confusion or collapse. If heat illness is suspected, move the pet out of the heat, begin cooling with water and contact a veterinarian immediately.
How to reduce heat risk before it becomes an emergency
Make cool water and shelter available
Provide plentiful fresh water and shaded places, and let pets move to a cool indoor area when it is too hot outside. Different rooms or temperature zones may help an animal find a more comfortable spot. For pets at higher risk, prioritize an air-conditioned room as much as possible. ( AVMA; ASPCA)
Adjust outdoor activity
Exercise during cooler hours, keep walks short when conditions are very hot, take breaks and bring water for both you and your dog. Avoid hot asphalt, which can burn paw pads. There is no single safe outdoor temperature cutoff established by the cited guidance, so consider the conditions and your pet’s health rather than relying on one number. (AVMA; ASPCA)
Keep pets out of parked cars
Never leave an animal unattended in a parked vehicle, even in shade or with windows partly open. Cars can heat quickly to dangerous levels. (AVMA; ASPCA)

Use grooming and outdoor products carefully
ASPCA advises trimming a dog’s longer hair if needed but not shaving it: coat layers help protect against overheating and sunburn. Brush cats more often in hot weather. Use sunscreen or insect repellent only when its label specifically says it is suitable for animals, and ask your veterinarian whether grooming or other protection is appropriate for your pet. (ASPCA; AVMA)
Take precautions around water and seasonal hazards
- Supervise pets at pools, lakes and beaches; offer fresh drinking water and introduce swimming gradually.
- Use a flotation device for pets on boats. Rinse dogs after swimming to remove chlorine or salt.
- Keep lawn chemicals, unsafe plants, fireworks, alcohol and potentially toxic foods out of reach, and follow product labels.
Ask your veterinarian about your pet’s individual heat risk, exercise plan, travel and parasite prevention. (ASPCA; AVMA)

Which pets need extra protection?
Flat-faced animals, including Pugs and Persian cats, as well as elderly or overweight pets and animals with heart or lung disease, are more susceptible to heatstroke, according to the ASPCA. Keep them cool and limit their exposure to hot conditions. Cats may show subtler signs than dogs; NYC Health’s 2026 alert says panting in a cat is concerning because it may signal difficulty breathing. (ASPCA; NYC Health, 2026)
How to recognize possible heat illness
Signs can include excessive panting, noisy or difficult breathing, a faster heart or respiratory rate, drooling, restlessness, unsteadiness, weakness, lethargy, disorientation, abnormal gum or tongue color, vomiting or diarrhea, seizures, and collapse. Bloody vomiting or diarrhea is especially serious. Cats can show fewer obvious signs, so do not dismiss panting in a cat. Contact a veterinarian promptly if you notice concerning symptoms. - Instant Cooling, Rapid Relief: Made with Q-Max > 0.5 cool-touch fabric, this mat delivers an instant cooling sensation as soon as your pet lies down—no plug, water, or gel needed, safe and worry-free. Please note: the mat is not an active cooler; prolonged lying may cause slight warming as it absorbs body heat, which is a normal physical property. Simply have your pet move away briefly; the mat then dissipates heat through air convection and resumes cooling, allowing for a cycle of reuse. Placing it in a well-ventilated area speeds up the cooling recovery. Especially ideal for active dogs that sweat easily or need rapid cooling after exercise.
- Breathes Easy, Stays Comfy: Say goodbye to stuffy, uncomfortable naps! Our lightweight, breathable fabric combined with premium bonded fiber filling promotes continuous air flow, helping your pet release excess heat effectively. Better ventilation means faster cooling recovery – even if the dog mat has warmed up, good airflow helps it bounce back quickly. Instant coolness, cycling comfort – a dry, pleasant retreat for your furry friend.
- Safety Certified, Non‑Slip Design: Certified to OEKO‑TEX STANDARD 100, this mat is free from plugs and gels, made with materials that are safe and non‑hazardous for your pet. The non‑slip dot pattern on the underside keeps the mat firmly in place on any floor, ensuring your companion stays comfortable and secure at all times.
- Effortless Clean, Always Fresh: Simplify your life! This pad is conveniently machine washable and dryer safe (low heat), making cleanup a breeze. Ditch the scrubbing – enjoy a fresh, clean mat with minimal effort, every time.
- Versatile Comfort, Everywhere They Go: Find the perfect fit! Available in multiple sizes as a cooling blanket or mat for cats, puppies, medium, and large dogs. It's especially ideal for heat-prone active breeds or long-haired pals. Whether it's a scorching day, a summer night's sleep, car rides, crate training, or adding a cozy spot to their favorite corner, this is a comfort companion for every adventure and quiet moment at home.
An ASPCA notice from 2021 lists a body temperature over 104°F among possible severe heatstroke signs. That is a warning associated with illness, not a general outdoor-weather cutoff or a temperature below which a pet is safe. (ASPCA, 2021)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if you suspect heatstroke
- Stop activity and move the pet to a cooler place. Get the animal out of direct heat and into shade or a cool environment.
- Start cooling with water. The 2026 RECOVER first-aid guideline for dogs and cats recommends cool running water over the trunk, especially the thin-haired underside. NYC Health advises spraying cool, not cold, water over the body and warns against covering the animal with wet towels because they can trap heat. (RECOVER, 2026; NYC Health, 2026)
- Contact a veterinarian and go for emergency care. Seek veterinary care immediately after beginning active cooling. For a dog, RSPCA advises creating airflow, transporting the dog in a cooled, ventilated vehicle and calling the clinic ahead. (RECOVER, 2026; RSPCA)
Cooling recommendations differ in scope and wording. RSPCA’s guidance is dog-specific and says cold water rarely causes shock in overheated dogs; it describes dousing or immersion as vital. Do not treat that dog-specific advice as a universal protocol for every species or situation. Prioritize veterinary direction, and do not attempt first aid if doing so would put you at high risk. The RECOVER guideline calls its active-cooling recommendation strong but based on very low-quality evidence; its more specific water-application and endpoint recommendations are weak and based on expert opinion. (RSPCA; RECOVER, 2026)
