If FFmpeg appears to freeze when its source file is missing, first determine whether the process is still running, suspended, or already exited. Then verify the exact input path and read the FFmpeg log. A missing local file and a background process suspended while checking terminal input are different problems: check the file before launch, and use -nostdin for unattended runs. Neither YouTube settings nor network-reconnect flags can supply a file that is not there.

Diagnose what “frozen” means

A YouTube player that shows a still image or stops advancing does not, by itself, tell you whether FFmpeg is alive. The encoder could have exited after an input error, become suspended while checking terminal input, be waiting for a pipe or other input, or be stalled at network output. Check the process and its logs before changing stream settings.

  1. Check the process state. On Linux, inspect it with ps -o pid,stat,cmd -p PID, substituting the FFmpeg process ID. A state containing T indicates a stopped process; no matching process means it has exited. On Windows, check whether ffmpeg.exe is still present in Task Manager or use Get-Process ffmpeg -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue in PowerShell. A process that still exists is not necessarily making progress.
  2. Check the input path and permissions. Confirm the path passed to -i is the path available to the process, not merely the path visible in your interactive shell. Check spelling, capitalization where the filesystem is case-sensitive, working directory, mount availability, and read permission.
  3. Read FFmpeg’s standard error or captured log. Look for an input-open error, repeated retries, a lack of new output progress, or output/network errors. If FFmpeg was launched by a service manager, scheduler, shell script, or container, inspect that launcher’s logs too.
  4. Check whether stdin or a pipe is involved. A background process may be stopped while trying to read terminal input. A process waiting on a pipe or input producer can also remain alive without receiving media. These cases need different fixes from a nonexistent file.

The exact operating system, FFmpeg build, launch method, command, and log determine the diagnosis; without them, no single “freeze” cause can be assumed.

Choose what should happen when the file is absent

FFmpeg reads input supplied with -i; its command-line documentation does not establish a built-in policy for waiting until a missing local file appears. Put that policy in the wrapper or supervisor that launches FFmpeg. Choose based on whether the file is expected to arrive and whether uninterrupted output matters.

Policy When it fits Continuity and trade-off
Validate, then wait and retry for a bounded time Another process is expected to create the file shortly. Allows the correct media to arrive before launch, but delays startup. Set a timeout and report a useful error when it expires.
Use a known fallback input The channel needs valid media output while the expected source is unavailable. Can keep an output feed going, but viewers see the fallback. Verify that it exists, is readable, and is authorized for use.
Fail clearly and let a supervisor retry A missing source is exceptional and should trigger an alert or operator action. Simple to observe, but there is no continuity until the source is restored. A restart loop without a path check just repeats the same failure.

For a bounded wait, make the check explicit before invoking FFmpeg. For example, on Linux or macOS:

input="/path/to/source.mp4"
timeout_seconds=60
elapsed=0

while [ ! -r "$input" ] && [ "$elapsed" -lt "$timeout_seconds" ]; do
  sleep 2
  elapsed=$((elapsed + 2))
done

if [ ! -r "$input" ]; then
  echo "Source is missing or unreadable: $input" >&2
  exit 1
fi

ffmpeg -nostdin -re -i "$input"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"

This is an example policy, not a universal encoding recipe: the timeout, codecs, bitrate, and input must suit your media and YouTube’s current guidance. The loop waits at most about 60 seconds in two-second intervals, then exits with an error rather than retrying forever. The -r option here means read input at its native rate; it is not a file-wait or reconnect option. If a file is being written by another process, ensure it is complete and safe to read before starting the encoder—file existence alone does not guarantee a finished recording.

On Windows, implement the same policy in PowerShell or the launcher you use: test that the exact path exists and is readable, wait only up to a chosen timeout if appropriate, and then either select an actual fallback or exit with a clear message. Avoid hard-coding a fallback path without checking it as well.

Stop background FFmpeg from suspending on console input

The FFmpeg FAQ explains that it checks console input for commands such as q and ?; in a background task, the operating system can suspend the process during that check. The FFmpeg Project’s documented remedy for an unattended invocation is -nostdin. The example above places it before the input options.

Alternatively, detach standard input when launching the process. On Linux or macOS, append < /dev/null to the command; on Windows Command Prompt, redirect from NUL. For example:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY" < /dev/null

Use either -nostdin or a suitable stdin redirection for a non-interactive job. This prevents the documented console-input suspension case; it does not make a missing file appear, unblock an unrelated pipe, or repair a network failure. If you need to send interactive commands to FFmpeg, do not disable its stdin without replacing that control path.

Do not use network recovery flags to solve a local missing file

FFmpeg’s protocol options include reconnection controls such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_on_network_error, with related status-code and retry-delay options. They apply to supported network inputs and their eligible failures. A local path that does not exist is not a network disconnect, so those flags are not a missing-file policy.

The FIFO muxer has separate output recovery controls. attempt_recovery can retry an output after failure. drop_pkts_on_overflow allows processing to continue without waiting for the output queue, but packets may be dropped and viewers can see missing stream content. These settings address output-side conditions; they cannot repair input absence. Use them only when the failure mode and the continuity trade-off are understood.

Configure YouTube only after FFmpeg can read media

YouTube’s destination settings matter once FFmpeg has input packets to send. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the server URL and stream key for the stream, then configure the encoder with the actual values shown there. Treat the key as a password: do not post it, include it in a public log, or share a command containing it. YouTube’s encoder setup is documented at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

  • Use the endpoint displayed for your stream rather than relying on an assumed fixed URL.
  • If you choose RTMPS, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room; RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
  • Match the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate guidance. Those recommendations are configuration guidance, not a fix for a missing source.
  • Test the complete path and monitor YouTube’s stream health. A configured destination or valid key cannot compensate for FFmpeg having no readable input.

Live Control Room labels and YouTube’s recommendations can change, so check the current help pages when setting up a stream.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely area to inspect Action
FFmpeg exits immediately when the source is absent Input path, access, or timing Confirm the exact -i path and readability; implement bounded waiting, a verified fallback, or clear failure handling.
FFmpeg remains in the process list but is stopped in the background Console input handling Launch with -nostdin or detach stdin as appropriate, then rerun the actual background launch method.
FFmpeg remains alive but the output is not advancing Input producer, pipe, or output/network path Inspect process state and logs for input progress, pipe waits, or output errors. Do not assume stdin is the cause solely because the stream looks frozen.
A supervisor keeps restarting FFmpeg and each run fails Persistent missing or unreadable source Make the preflight check fail visibly and alert; retry only when the source may actually be restored.
FFmpeg reads the source but YouTube does not show a healthy stream Destination URL/key, protocol, encoder settings, or YouTube stream health Verify the current Live Control Room values, chosen RTMP/RTMPS endpoint, encoder settings, and YouTube’s health indicators.
Output recovery continues but parts of the stream are missing FIFO overflow policy Check whether packet dropping was enabled; it can trade waiting for output for lost content.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel, rather than diagnose a particular FFmpeg job, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not camera input, and it does not fix a missing file on your own FFmpeg host. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
