A tripod can steady the camera, but it cannot stop foliage from moving during the exposure.
First identify what is moving
Wind can blur a foliage photo in two different ways: leaves move while the shutter is open, or gusts move the camera and lens. A faster shutter speed tackles the first problem. Shelter and stable camera support tackle the second. A sharp frame may require both.
This distinction matters because a tripod only addresses camera movement. If leaves are still shifting during a long exposure, they can remain blurred even when the camera is perfectly steady.
Choose a shutter speed for the leaves
Start with a shutter speed that visibly arrests the leaf motion in your scene, then make it faster if edges still smear. There is no single speed that guarantees sharp leaves in every wind: movement, distance, focal length, framing, and the look you want all affect the result.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a telephoto landscape, Nikon contributor Mike Mezeul II offers a separate starting point for camera shake: use a shutter speed about twice the lens focal length. His example is 400mm at 1/800 second. Treat that as a guideline for reducing camera-motion risk, not as a guarantee that moving leaves will freeze. As Mezeul puts it, “When shooting in windy conditions, your long lens will act as a sail and catch a lot of that wind.” Nikon’s guide to super-telephoto landscapes explains the field concern.
Get out of the gusts
Find shelter behind a car, building, tree, or other windbreak, and point the lens away from the strongest gust when the composition allows. With a long lens, even your body or a nearby object may help block wind; stay close enough to provide shelter without intruding into the frame.

Use a stable stance and keep the camera supported. A tripod can help hold framing, particularly with a long lens or when light requires a slower shutter speed. A remote release or the camera’s self-timer can also reduce shake from pressing the shutter button. Neither support nor a remote release can freeze wind-blown leaves.
Balance shutter speed, aperture, and ISO
Choose aperture for the kind of foliage image you want, then use ISO to help maintain a shutter speed fast enough for the movement. A broad landscape often calls for more depth of field; a selectively focused leaf may suit a wider aperture. If the light is overcast, raising ISO can help you keep both a high shutter speed and the depth of field you want. In Nikon’s autumn foliage guide, nature photographer Rod Planck recommends pushing ISO in cloud cover rather than giving up landscape depth of field just to retain a high shutter speed while hand-holding.

There is no fixed exposure recipe: the right balance depends on the light, wind, lens, composition, and desired depth of field. Nikon’s autumn foliage tips discuss exposure choices for fall scenes.
Work through a quick field sequence
- Move to shelter. Find a windbreak and, if practical, aim away from the strongest gust.
- Set a motion-stopping shutter speed. Take a frame and look closely at leaf edges; raise shutter speed if they smear.
- Recover exposure with ISO. In dim or cloudy light, increase ISO as needed to retain your chosen shutter speed and depth of field.
- Stabilize the camera. Use a steady stance or tripod, and a remote release or self-timer if touching the camera risks disturbing it.
- Shoot a short sequence and inspect. Check sharpness at magnification, then adjust shutter speed or position as the gusts change.
What each technique can—and cannot—fix
| Technique | Best for | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Faster shutter speed | Reducing blur from moving leaves; also helps limit camera shake. | Needs enough light, or a higher ISO or wider aperture. |
| Wind shelter and stable stance | Reducing gusts that buffet the camera or lens. | Does not stop leaves moving in the scene. |
| Tripod | Holding camera position and framing steady. | Cannot freeze moving foliage; wind can still shake an inadequately stable setup. |
| Remote release or self-timer | Reducing movement caused by pressing the shutter. | Does not control leaf motion or gusts striking the camera. |
| Higher ISO | Enabling a faster shutter speed in low or overcast light while retaining desired depth of field. | Changes exposure sensitivity; choose a level that suits your camera and image needs. |
Adobe’s guidance likewise distinguishes camera stability from subject motion: a tripod can steady the camera, but wind-induced camera shake can still cause blur if the support is not sturdy. Adobe’s long-exposure photography guide addresses wind and camera movement.
