If you need actual Docker containers, use a Linux virtual machine configured for Docker or connect Termux’s Docker client to a separate Linux host. Which route works depends on what you mean by “Docker” and whether the process must stay available in the background.
First, decide whether you need Docker or just a Linux service
Docker containers depend on a Docker daemon and kernel features such as namespaces and cgroups. Termux runs on Android’s host kernel. Installing Ubuntu or Debian inside PRoot-Distro gives you a Linux filesystem and userland, not a replacement kernel, real root access, or a Docker daemon. The PRoot-Distro project documentation describes how its environment differs from a conventional Linux system.
That distinction points to three practical choices: run compatible Linux programs in PRoot-Distro, run Docker Engine inside a properly configured Linux VM, or use Termux as a client for Docker running on another Linux machine.
Compare the available approaches

Run Linux userland programs with PRoot-Distro
If your goal is a Linux command-line tool or a compatible individual process—not Docker Engine—PRoot-Distro is the most direct Termux option documented here. Its setup installs a distribution userland that runs under PRoot; it does not turn the phone into a conventional Linux server.

- Install PRoot-Distro from Termux:
pkg install proot-distro. - Install the documented Ubuntu image:
proot-distro install ubuntu:24.04. - Enter its shell:
proot-distro login ubuntu. - Install and run the Linux program you actually need, checking its requirements against PRoot and Android’s kernel. A program that needs kernel features unavailable to the app will not become compatible just because it is installed inside Ubuntu.
PRoot-Distro notes that filesystem-heavy workloads may be slower, kernel-dependent functionality may not work, and full init or service supervisors are generally not possible. Individual long-running processes can run, but that is not equivalent to Docker’s service management or isolation. The supported behavior also depends on the distribution image and the Android device.
Keep an individual Termux process available
For a foreground process in PRoot-Distro, keep the Termux session running while you need that process. Use the program’s own stop command or its normal interrupt mechanism when finished. PRoot-Distro documents process and session commands, but the available documentation does not establish that Android will keep a Termux process alive indefinitely. Background and battery-management behavior can vary by device and settings, so do not treat a running shell as an uptime guarantee.

If you need Docker Engine, choose a real Docker host
Option 1: Run Docker in a Linux VM
Docker Engine needs an environment with a suitable Linux kernel. A VM can provide a guest Linux kernel, and Termux documents QEMU as an optional emulation tool. However, that does not by itself supply a tested, universal Docker VM setup: configuration, networking, performance, and compatibility depend on the device and VM approach. Treat this as an advanced, device-specific project and follow a current guide for the exact VM configuration you intend to use.
Option 2: Use a separate Linux machine
Run Docker Engine on a Linux host such as a machine you control, then use a Docker client from the system where the CLI is available to target that host. Docker documents remote daemon access and contexts for selecting a daemon endpoint. Follow Docker’s security guidance: do not expose an unauthenticated daemon on a network-accessible TCP port. Unauthorized access to the daemon can put the host at risk.

Why installing Docker inside PRoot is not the fix
Installing a Docker package inside an Ubuntu or Debian PRoot environment does not supply the missing Android-host kernel features or make the PRoot environment a Docker host. In particular, do not treat apt install docker.io inside PRoot as a complete way to run Docker Engine on Android. If you need Docker itself, use a Linux VM configured for Docker or a separate Docker host.
What the termux-docker project does—and does not do
The termux-docker project packages a Termux environment as an image for use in an already-running Docker or Podman system. Its README requires a properly configured container runtime. Architecture-specific behavior and possible privilege or seccomp workarounds for some ARM workloads are runtime caveats; they do not make the project a way to bootstrap Docker on Android.

Choose based on the requirement
- You need a Linux shell tool or one compatible process: try PRoot-Distro, and check the program’s kernel and service requirements.
- You need Docker Engine locally: investigate a Linux VM under QEMU, understanding that setup and performance are device-dependent.
- You need dependable Docker access without making the phone the host: use a separate Linux machine and secure the remote connection.
- You want Termux packaged inside a container: use
termux-dockeronly when Docker or Podman is already running somewhere.
