Keep dbt models in sync by treating the project in Git as the reviewed definition of transformation logic, expressing dependencies with ref and declared sources, and testing changes in an isolated environment before promoting them to production. Add source-freshness checks as a separate signal: upstream data can change even when model SQL does not. The exact commands and features depend on your dbt release and execution mode, so verify them against the documentation for your installed version.
What “in sync” means in a dbt project
Keeping models in sync is more than rerunning SQL. It means the reviewed project code, the dependency graph dbt builds, and the relations available in each environment agree with one another. It also means noticing when upstream data changes independently of the code.
dbt uses your warehouse to execute model SQL. Its ref function identifies dependencies between dbt models and resolves a model’s relation for the active environment; declared sources represent raw inputs loaded by other systems. This gives dbt a graph it can use to order work and select upstream relations. See dbt’s SQL models documentation and its sources documentation.
Put reviewed model logic in Git
Keep project code, configuration, and model tests under version control. Develop on a branch, review changes before merging to the production branch, and use separate development and production targets. This prevents local experimentation from silently changing the production definition. dbt’s workflow guidance recommends version control and separate environments; target names and deployment practices should fit your organization.

Make every model dependency explicit
Use ref for another dbt model
When one model reads another, use ref rather than hard-coding the warehouse relation name. For example, a model can select from {{ ref('stg_orders') }}. dbt can then infer the dependency and resolve the referenced relation in the target environment.
Declare raw warehouse inputs as sources
For tables populated outside dbt, declare a source and select from it with source, rather than scattering literal raw relation names through models. Centralized source definitions make upstream changes easier to manage and provide a place for source tests and freshness settings. dbt recommends standardizing source names and types early, then building downstream models on that consistent layer. That is guidance, not a required directory structure.
Build a pull-request check that protects production
Run CI on pull requests and relevant commits, using a warehouse target or schema isolated from production. A successful SQL build alone is not a complete quality gate: add tests to models and sources so CI checks both execution and the assumptions downstream users rely on.

Test changed models and their dependents
For smaller projects, building and testing the full project in an isolated target is straightforward. As projects grow, a state-aware or “slim CI” workflow can test modified models and their descendants instead. dbt’s workflow guide illustrates selection with state:modified+: the plus includes downstream dependents. With --defer and a path to production artifacts, unchanged parents can resolve from the supplied state rather than being rebuilt. The guide identifies this workflow capability as supported by dbt v1.1 or newer; confirm syntax and support for your installed release and execution mode in the workflow documentation.
A state-aware example, to adapt to the project and dbt version, is:
dbt build --select state:modified+ --defer --state path/to/production-artifacts
This approach depends on having suitable production artifacts to compare against. A full isolated build avoids that dependency but can take more time and warehouse resources. Choose based on project size and dependency shape, CI runtime and cost, and confidence that the saved production state is current.

Use managed dbt platform CI only within its documented scope
For dbt platform CI, the documentation describes building affected assets in a temporary schema unique to each pull request and returning status to the Git provider. The schema is deleted when the pull request is closed or merged; custom schema naming can affect cleanup. Those managed behaviors are specific to the platform documentation and should not be assumed for a self-managed dbt Core workflow. See dbt platform’s CI documentation.
Choose useful baseline tests
dbt’s workflow guidance reports that its style guide recommends testing each model’s primary key for uniqueness and non-nullness. Apply those checks where a model has a meaningful primary key, and add other tests that reflect its actual contracts and use. Attach relevant checks to sources as well as models, so problems can be identified near the input boundary.
Track data freshness separately from SQL changes
Source freshness answers when upstream data arrived; it does not answer whether model code changed. Configure freshness thresholds appropriate to the source’s delivery expectations if you need SLA alerts or custom freshness logic. A freshness failure may require investigation or a downstream rebuild even when no pull request has changed the SQL.

The current source documentation describes dbt freshness --resource-type source and, for dbt v2 State behavior, dbt build --select source_status:fresher+ to evaluate sources and build downstream models with fresher inputs. The page distinguishes v2 warehouse-metadata tracking from explicit freshness configuration, which remains useful for alerts and custom logic. Configuration placement changed in v1.9 and v1.10, and command availability varies by release and execution mode; check the documentation for the version you run before adopting these examples.
Promote reviewed changes and keep environments aligned
After CI passes and the pull request is approved, deploy the merged project to production through your team’s deployment process. Make deployment status and model test results visible to the people responsible for the warehouse. Keep development work on development targets and production jobs on production targets; exact permissions, schema strategy, and schedules are organization-specific.
If multiple dbt projects depend on one another, define public models as explicit interfaces and align consumers with the matching producer environment. dbt warns that a configured staging environment can become the source of cross-project reference metadata before a successful staging run. Establish and successfully run that environment before marking it as staging. See dbt’s project dependency guidance.

Cross-project packages are another option: they load another project’s source code and can add parsing time and complexity. They may still suit unified deployments or coordinated end-to-end changes. Choose between packages and public-model interfaces based on how projects are deployed and how tightly their changes need to be coordinated.
Choose materializations for the workload, not as a synchronization fix
Materialization affects how a model is built and queried; it does not replace version control, explicit dependencies, tests, or deployment checks. dbt’s workflow guidance offers starting points, not guarantees for every warehouse:
| Materialization | Starting point in dbt guidance | Trade-off to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| View | Default starting point | Quicker to build than a table, but slower to query. |
| Table | BI-facing models and models with multiple descendants | Can improve query performance, with build time to consider. |
| Ephemeral | Lightweight transformations that should not be exposed as warehouse relations | Useful for internal transformations; consider how it fits downstream use. |
| Incremental | Consider when a table’s build time exceeds an acceptable threshold | Can be faster to build than a table materialization, but adds logic and operational complexity. |
Compare build time, query performance, downstream consumers, and the extra complexity of incremental logic using your own warehouse workload.
Version-check commands before adopting them
dbt’s official documentation spans distinct release families, including pages labeled v1.12 and v2.0, and some behaviors are explicitly version-specific. Do not treat a command from one page as a version-independent recipe. Confirm its support and configuration for your installed dbt release and execution mode, especially for state-aware CI and source freshness.
