To keep captions available across prerecorded episodes in a 24/7 YouTube story stream, prepare a timed caption track for each episode and configure captions separately for the live broadcast. The episode tracks do not automatically become captions for the continuous live feed. Choose either embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions or a supported HTTP POST caption feed, then test that captions stay synchronized at episode changes and after a restart. YouTube does not document automatic caption continuity across prerecorded episode boundaries.
Plan for two separate caption layers
A prerecorded episode can have its own caption or subtitle track in YouTube Studio. Separately, the live broadcast can receive captions embedded in its outgoing video signal or through a supported HTTP POST caption feed. Do not assume a caption track attached to an uploaded episode will appear in the live broadcast when your playout system switches to that episode.
Think of the live caption feed as part of the continuous broadcast pipeline, not as a collection of episode tracks. The video can move from one file to another while the live caption system must continue sending correctly timed text. YouTube’s documentation describes the delivery methods, but does not guarantee that captions will follow episode changes automatically.

Check or add each episode’s caption track
- In YouTube Studio, open the episode’s subtitles or captions settings and check whether the correct language track is present.
- If you have a timed caption file, upload it with its timing information. YouTube also supports manual caption entry and transcript auto-sync.
- For transcript auto-sync, provide a transcript in the same language as the spoken audio. YouTube says processing may take a few minutes and does not recommend auto-sync for videos longer than one hour or with poor audio quality.
- Review the result against the episode, especially names, dialogue, music cues, and the opening and closing seconds. Automatically generated captions can be delayed or unavailable, and they may need correction.
Complete this check for every episode in the rotation, not just the first one. A missing, incorrect, or differently timed track on a single episode can make a continuous story stream feel inconsistent even if the live caption feed itself is working.

Choose how the live broadcast will receive captions
Decide on the live caption method before configuring the encoder or caption provider. YouTube documents two approaches: captions embedded in the outgoing video signal, or a caption feed sent to YouTube through HTTP POST. The right choice depends on what your encoder and caption workflow can produce.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API identifies broadcast caption modes as disabled, HTTP POST, and embedded. Match the broadcast setting to the method your system is using; selecting a mode alone does not create or supply caption data.
Check language and track expectations
YouTube’s live-caption guidance says the 608/708 standard supports up to four language tracks, while the workflow described on that page currently supports one caption track. Because platform guidance can change, check YouTube’s current live-caption requirements before setting up multiple languages. Do not assume the number of tracks supported by a caption format is the same as the number available in YouTube’s current workflow.

Set latency with captions in mind
If closed captions are required, do not use ultra-low latency. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation says ultra-low latency “does not support closed captions, or resolutions higher than 1080p.” Choose a supported latency mode for the caption setup you intend to use.
YouTube’s Help instructions for its HTTP caption setup describe adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. That timing belongs to that specific workflow; it is not a universal requirement for every embedded-caption or HTTP caption configuration. Follow the current instructions for your chosen method and caption provider.
Test episode changes before running continuously
YouTube does not promise that captions automatically track episode changes in a 24/7 playout setup. Treat transition testing as an operational check of your own encoder, feed, and playlist rather than as a platform guarantee.

- Run a representative test with at least two episodes in sequence.
- Check the first seconds after the switch: make sure the new episode’s dialogue is captioned, the text is in the right language, and the timing matches the audio.
- Watch the transition itself for captions that linger from the previous episode, disappear, arrive late, or become out of sync.
- Test a planned encoder or stream restart and confirm the caption path resumes as expected.
- Review the replay separately after the test. A caption result in the live player does not establish that the replay will have the same caption track.
For a long-running schedule, repeat checks when you change the playlist, encoder configuration, caption provider, or stream entry point. A successful test of one transition is evidence about that setup, not a guarantee for every later change.

YouTube documents automatic live captions as English-only and subject to its stated operating and rollout conditions. They are not a substitute for a deliberate caption feed when you need reliable captions across a multilingual or carefully synchronized story schedule.
YouTube also says automatic captions produced during a live stream do not remain on the video after the stream ends. Replay captions are generated separately through the VOD process and may differ. Check the replay’s caption track on its own rather than assuming live captions will carry over.

Troubleshoot missing, interrupted, or different captions
No captions on an uploaded episode
- Check whether the episode has an owner-provided caption track or an automatically generated one in YouTube Studio.
- If auto-captions are missing or delayed, YouTube lists possible causes including unsupported language, poor audio, long duration, long silence at the start, overlapping speakers, and simultaneous languages.
- Review generated captions for errors and correct them; availability does not establish accuracy.
Episode captions exist, but the live output has none
- Check the broadcast caption mode and confirm it matches the selected method: embedded or HTTP POST.
- For embedded captions, verify that the encoder is embedding EIA-608/CEA-708 in its outgoing signal.
- For HTTP POST, verify that the caption provider has the correct ingestion URL for the broadcast and that the feed is active. YouTube allows one caption feed per stream entry point.
- Check the stream’s latency mode and make sure it is not ultra-low latency when closed captions are required.
The documented mechanisms are separate, and YouTube does not specify a universal diagnostic sequence for every encoder. Check the actual output and provider configuration for your system.
Captions disappear or drift at an episode boundary
Check whether the caption feed or embedded caption output continues through the source switch, whether the next episode’s timing starts correctly, and whether the caption system needs a new cue or timing reset. Compare the caption text with the audio immediately before and after the transition. These are practical checks; YouTube does not document automatic boundary tracking for every playout pipeline.

Live captions work, but the replay is different
Check the replay’s caption track separately. YouTube says live automatic captions do not remain after the stream and VOD captions are generated separately, so a different replay result does not by itself show that the live caption feed failed.

Examples named in YouTube’s live-caption guidance
YouTube’s Help page names Total Eclipse (Eclipse/AccuCap 6.0.0.5 or later), Case CATalyst (BCS 14.52 or later), CaptionMaker (version 5.22 or later), and StreamText.Net in its live-caption guidance. These are examples, not confirmation that each product currently supports your particular encoder, automates episode transitions, or is available on the same terms. Check current vendor requirements and compatibility before choosing a workflow.
