If you still need bait or another pesticide, follow its label exactly and make sure your pet cannot reach the product, its contents, or the treated area. No bait station or pesticide should be assumed safe for pets simply because it is enclosed or marketed for household use.
1. Remove what is attracting ants
Clean crumbs, grease, and spills promptly, and wipe food residue from counters and floors. Secure garbage, rinse recyclables, and store pantry goods in insect-proof containers. Fix leaks and dry standing water, since ants may be drawn to water as well as food.
Pet food can also attract foraging ants. Store it in a sealed container and avoid leaving bowls out where ants can reach leftover food. Cornell University’s ant-management guidance and the University of Minnesota Extension’s ants guidance recommend sanitation and limiting access to food as basic control measures.
2. Find and seal the entry route
Follow the ant trail to see where it enters. Seal suitable small gaps and cracks around doors, windows, foundations, plumbing, and utility openings. Keep doors and windows closed or screened where practical, and repair damaged seals. Removing access to food helps, but closing the route can reduce the number of ants reaching the kitchen.

3. Use bait only if you can keep it inaccessible
Ant baits work when foraging workers accept the bait and carry it back to nestmates. If ants ignore a bait, its food attractant may not suit them; competing food can also make bait less appealing. NC State Extension explains this mechanism and the importance of bait acceptance in its Baiting for Ants guidance.
Choose a product whose label permits the intended ant use and placement. Put it near ant activity only if you can ensure your pet cannot reach or chew any part of it. A station under a cabinet is not automatically inaccessible: consider whether your animal can open the cabinet, climb, squeeze into the space, or chew the station. Never place bait on food-preparation surfaces or near food.

- Do not spray insecticide around bait; the baiting method depends on ants visiting it.
- Keep pesticide products in their original containers and locked away from pets.
- Follow the product label’s directions for placement, use, and disposal.
UF/IFAS Extension advises: “Ensure that pets cannot access any part of the bait station.” Its Pets and Pesticides: Benefits and Potential Risks guidance also explains that risk depends on both a product’s toxicity and the pet’s exposure.
4. Take precautions with other pesticide applications
If a pesticide label allows an application in the kitchen, remove pets, toys, food bowls, and bedding before treating the area. Keep pets out for the exact period stated on the product label, and do not spray near pet food or water dishes. The National Pesticide Information Center’s Pesticide Use Around Pets guidance gives general advice to wait until treated areas are dry and well ventilated, but a product’s label may specify different or additional precautions.

5. If a pet may have contacted or eaten bait
If your pet chews a bait station or may have swallowed any pesticide, contact a veterinarian or the phone number printed on the product label. Have the container or product information available. Do not rely on a generic treatment or waiting period: the appropriate response depends on the product and the animal.

Sanitation and sealing reduce the resources and routes that bring ants into the kitchen, without introducing pesticide bait exposure. Baits add a control method, but they require ants to accept the food and require reliable protection against pet access. No single approach is guaranteed to work for every ant problem.

Wiping trails with vinegar and water may temporarily disrupt them, according to University of Minnesota Extension, but it is not a lasting substitute for cleaning, sealing entry points, or carefully managed bait when needed.
