Give an AI music generator a specific creative brief, then curate and revise what it makes. Start with a scene or emotional tension, add musical direction such as pace, instruments, vocal character and arrangement, and compare several generations. Your own lyrics, voice, samples and edits can add choices the generator could not make for you. These steps improve direction and creative control; they cannot guarantee a unique result.
Why broad prompts often produce interchangeable songs
A prompt such as “make an upbeat pop song” leaves many important decisions open: what the song is about, how the melody moves, which instruments lead, how the vocal sounds and how the arrangement develops. The generator has room to make all of those choices, so the result may feel familiar rather than personal.
Both Udio’s prompting guide and Suno’s song-making guide recommend adding more specific direction and refining generations. Specificity gives the system a narrower creative brief; it does not ensure that every output will be distinctive or that every requested detail will be followed.
Build a brief around a scene and a few musical choices
Start with what is happening
Before naming a genre, describe a scene: who is present, what is happening and what emotional change or contradiction the song should carry. For example, a song might follow someone leaving a late-night party while feeling relieved to go and sorry to leave. A concrete situation gives the lyrics and sound a reason to cohere. Udio’s guide specifically suggests using imagery and scenarios.

Choose details that shape the sound
Translate the scene into a compact set of musical choices. Specify the mood, a genre or deliberate genre blend, approximate pace, foreground instruments, vocal quality and one arrangement contrast. For instance: “A restrained, uneasy indie-folk song at a slow pace, with close, dry vocals and muted piano; keep the verse sparse, then widen the chorus with low strings.” This is a steering brief, not a guarantee that the generator will reproduce every element exactly.
Describe musical qualities rather than piling on adjectives. “Restless” is more actionable when paired with a musical role or behavior, such as offbeat percussion or a clipped vocal delivery. Keep the brief focused: a few details that serve the scene are more useful than a long list of unrelated sounds.

Put some of the song’s identity in your own material
If the platform offers custom lyrics, write or revise the lines that matter most: a specific image, a memorable refrain or a phrase that expresses the song’s tension. Section markers and vocal or instrumental cues can also help communicate where the song should change. Treat them as guidance rather than commands; generation tools may not follow cues perfectly.
Suno documents custom lyrics and section editing, while both Suno and Udio describe ways to customize elements of a song. The exact controls and their availability can change, so check the current platform interface and plan details. A human-written lyric, a distinctive vocal take or a sample you supply gives the track a personal choice beyond the initial prompt.

Generate alternatives, then compare them deliberately
Do not treat the first output as the only possible answer. Generate several versions, listen for the element that works best in each, and keep the take with the strongest hook, vocal, groove or texture. Both platform guides recommend trying alternatives and iterating.
For the next round, change only a few prompt details at a time. If you alter the pace, instrumentation, mood and vocal direction all at once, it becomes difficult to tell which change helped. Compare versions using questions such as:

- Is the hook or melody memorable, or does it feel like a default genre pattern?
- Do the lyrics and story contain details particular to this song?
- Does the arrangement change meaningfully between sections?
- Does the vocal have a character and phrasing that suit the scene?
- Does the mix leave room for the detail that makes the track distinctive?
These are practical listening criteria, not a validated scoring system. Use them to decide what to keep and what to revise, rather than assuming that a more elaborate prompt is automatically better.

Once a generation has a useful hook or texture, make targeted changes instead of restarting by default. Where the platform supports it, rewrite or reorder sections, add a vocal or instrument, or refine the arrangement. Suno’s guide also describes splitting and exporting stems or MIDI for use in other software, where you can edit and mix with more control.

Moving stems or MIDI into a digital audio workstation is optional, not a prerequisite for making a song. It is a next step when you want control over individual parts that prompt-level tools do not provide. Feature access can depend on the platform and plan; check current availability before building a workflow around a particular export or editing control.
Describe the sound instead of naming an artist
A named artist is a shortcut that can obscure what you actually want. Replace it with accurate musical descriptors: for example, clipped phrasing, dry close vocals, offbeat percussion, a narrow melodic range or a particular instrument role. Choose traits that genuinely fit the intended song, rather than assembling a list of borrowed signatures.
Suno says it redirects prompts naming a specific artist toward descriptive musical characteristics and frames its goal as original creation. Udio says it will not copy an artist’s voice but may capture a similar musical feel. These are platform statements about their behavior, not legal guarantees or proof that an output is unique. What studies of AI music prompts can—and cannot—tell you
A 2025 study by Luca Casini, Cros Vila, Dalmazzo, Kaila and Sturm analyzed user-generated Suno and Udio material from May through October 2024. It describes recurring patterns in prompts, tags, lyrics and metatags, offering a picture of how people used those tools during that period. It does not test which prompting or editing technique causes a song to sound less generic, so it cannot establish that any one workflow will reliably produce more original results. If you plan to release or monetize the song
Creative distinctiveness and copyright eligibility are separate questions. Suno’s help guidance says wholly AI-generated music may not qualify for US copyright protection, while human-written lyrics may be protected. It also notes that treatment can differ by region and that distributor terms may matter.
