Keep the encoder process and its YouTube output running; change or sequence the media feeding that encoder. Replacing the source is not the same as stopping the stream at YouTube. A source change can still cause a visible gap, and neither YouTube’s setup guidance nor the software documentation cited here guarantees seamless switching or recovery after an encoder disconnect.

How the source and YouTube connection fit together

A typical file-based setup has three parts: video files, an encoder that reads or sequences them, and an output connection to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key. Its instructions say to stop sending content from the encoder to end the stream, so the practical approach is to leave that configured output running while changing the upstream media source, if your software supports it. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions do not promise that every source change is invisible to viewers or that a disconnected encoder will resume the same broadcast.

The YouTube Live Streaming API distinguishes a live stream—the video feed sent to YouTube—from a live broadcast it can be associated with. That distinction helps explain the architecture, but it is not a guarantee that reconnecting an encoder preserves a particular broadcast. The API documentation describes the feed and its ingest configuration.

OBS Media Source GUI-based playback of a local media file, including a file set to loop Supported media formats and a Loop option Looping or changing the source is not documented as a guarantee of gapless playback or safe hot-reloading.
FFmpeg concat demuxer A known, prepared sequence of compatible files Sequential reading of a file list It is not documented as an interactive playlist editor; files must have matching streams, codecs, and time base.

Option 1: Use OBS for a single file or a simple loop

OBS Media Source provides a graphical way to play a video file. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among supported formats. Its Loop setting controls whether playback restarts when the media file runs out; the documented default is Off. See OBS Media Sources.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Keep the YouTube output configured in OBS. Use YouTube’s Live Control Room to obtain the server URL and stream key, then enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings as directed by YouTube’s setup instructions. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it.
  2. Add a Media Source. In an OBS scene, add a Media Source and select the video file. Confirm that the file plays and that its picture and audio are appropriate for the scene.
  3. Set Loop if you want playback to restart. Enable the source’s Loop option if the same file should repeat. This controls playback after the file ends; it does not mean the source can be replaced without a transition.
  4. Start the encoder output and verify the YouTube preview. Leave the output running when the intended operation is an upstream media change. Do not use Stop Streaming if you mean to keep that output connection active.
  5. For a replacement, change the media source upstream and inspect the result. OBS documentation does not establish a universally safe hot-reload procedure or gapless transition. Check the preview for black frames, missing audio, or a stalled source. If the source needs to be removed and recreated, assume the transition may be visible.

OBS is the more direct choice when an operator needs a GUI and a simple source operation. The documentation cited here does not establish that OBS will automatically recover every YouTube disconnect or preserve the same broadcast after a restart.

Option 2: Use FFmpeg for a prepared sequence on the server

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file listing media files and demuxes them in order, as if their packets had been muxed together. This suits a sequence planned in advance; it is not evidence that editing the list after FFmpeg has opened it will switch the current source reliably. FFmpeg requires the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time base. It adjusts timestamps using each file’s duration, so incorrect durations or differing streams can cause problems or artifacts. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Prepare compatible inputs

  • Check that the files have matching stream layouts, codecs, and time base before relying on concat demuxing.
  • Use accurate durations. The concat demuxer uses duration to adjust timestamps for later files; inaccurate values can create artifacts.
  • Plan the sequence before starting the process. The documented behavior is sequential playback of a list, not interactive replacement of that list while it is being read.

Keep the encoder output distinct from the input sequence

Run the media-reading and YouTube-output workflow as a persistent server-side process, and avoid stopping its YouTube output merely to move from one prepared input to the next. The appropriate FFmpeg input and output options depend on the actual files and the output configuration. FFmpeg can read regular files and network streams and write outputs; stream copy can pass compressed packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding. Whether stream copy is suitable depends on compatibility with the required output, while re-encoding may be needed for a different format or settings. The FFmpeg command-line documentation does not provide one universal command or profile for every input and YouTube stream.

For a playlist that must be changed interactively, do not assume that editing a concat list already open by FFmpeg will update the live source safely. Use a workflow designed for source control, or schedule a controlled restart with the understanding that it may interrupt the feed. The cited sources do not establish a general YouTube reconnection window or guarantee that an encoder restart resumes the exact same broadcast.

RTMP and HLS are different ingest choices

Do not add HLS segment settings to a standard RTMP setup. YouTube describes HLS as an ingest option for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. HLS requires an HLS stream key and a capable encoder, and YouTube says it has higher latency because it sends segments rather than one continuous RTMP stream. Its HLS requirements include TS segments 1–4 seconds long and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Details are in YouTube’s HLS setup documentation. The source-replacement workflow described above does not, by itself, require HLS.

What a server deployment changes—and what it does not

Running the encoder on a server can keep it independent of a home computer, but it does not remove the need to manage the media process, compatible inputs, output settings, and failures. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a managed service that accepts an input endpoint and uses a channel to transcode live input into HLS or DASH output. That is one cloud-streaming category, not a requirement for sending prerecorded files to YouTube. See Google Cloud’s Live Stream API overview. A server-side FFmpeg process may be sufficient for some implementations; costs, operating effort, and suitability depend on the chosen hosting and configuration.

Troubleshoot source changes without ending the output deliberately

  • YouTube says the stream ended: Check whether the encoder stopped sending content or its process exited. YouTube says to stop sending content from the encoder to end the stream; its guidance does not specify a universal reconnect period or promise the same broadcast will resume.
  • The new video does not appear: Confirm the encoder is still running, the intended scene or input is selected, and the media file is readable. In OBS, verify the Media Source path and playback; with FFmpeg, confirm that the planned file list and inputs are valid.
  • There is a black frame, freeze, or audio gap: Treat it as a source-transition issue rather than proof that the YouTube output ended. The cited OBS and FFmpeg documentation does not guarantee gapless switching. Check media compatibility and timestamps, and test transitions before relying on them for a live audience.
  • Later files show timing artifacts: For concat demuxing, check matching streams, codecs, and time base, and verify duration information because timestamps are adjusted based on file duration.
  • The output does not accept the chosen ingest method: Confirm whether the encoder is configured for the intended RTMP or HLS workflow and uses the matching YouTube stream key. HLS has its own segment rules and higher latency; do not mix its constraints with generic RTMP settings.

Keep the content eligible to stream

Technical continuity does not establish that a video is permitted on YouTube. Before looping or sequencing media, make sure you have the rights needed for its video and audio and that it complies with YouTube’s policies. Reusing material repeatedly is not, by itself, evidence of rights or policy compliance. Review YouTube’s current rules and the stream’s status in YouTube Studio rather than assuming a long-running encoder can override a restriction.

YouTube’s encoder setup page states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” This is YouTube’s stated archive behavior for streams under 12 hours; it does not mean an encoder restart necessarily preserves one broadcast. See the encoder setup page.
