To keep a YouTube channel live around the clock with prerecorded video, schedule a YouTube Live event and connect it to an encoder or streaming service that continuously sends the video. Scheduling creates the event and watch page; it does not play or loop the video by itself. Choose a computer-based encoder, cloud service, or dedicated hardware, then test the feed and its recovery before relying on it.
What you need for a 24/7 YouTube Live stream
A scheduled stream has two parts: the YouTube event, where viewers find the broadcast, and the outgoing video feed, supplied by an encoder or streaming service. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a format it can stream. The encoder connects to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key.
- A channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility information.
- Video and a playback plan. Decide which recording or playlist should run, whether it should repeat, and who will check the stream.
- An encoder or streaming service. It must send the feed continuously; scheduling alone does not do this.
- A sustainable upload connection or cloud delivery. The outgoing bitrate must be supportable by the connection sending the stream.
Choose how to send prerecorded video
These are alternatives, not requirements to buy a particular encoder. YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists software, hardware, and cloud options, including cloud products Gyre and Upstream and the AJA HELO Plus hardware encoder. Directory inclusion is not a guarantee that a product suits your workflow; check its current terms, capabilities, and availability.
| Method | Best suited to | What you take responsibility for |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder on a computer | Operators who want local control and can keep a computer and connection running | Computer uptime, operating-system updates, restart recovery, local bandwidth, playlist playback, and monitoring |
| Cloud service | Operators who do not want a local computer to generate the continuous feed | Current price and plan limits, uploads and storage, scheduling and playlist controls, supported formats, service monitoring, account security, and stream recovery |
| Dedicated hardware | Operators who prefer an appliance; YouTube names AJA HELO Plus and its PlayToStream function for scheduled prerecorded media without a computer | Current model availability, supported media and workflow, schedule controls, storage, monitoring, and price |
Schedule the YouTube event and connect the feed
- Enable live streaming in advance. Verify the channel and turn on live streaming in YouTube Studio. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create the scheduled event. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open the Manage tab and schedule the stream. Set its title, description, visibility, and other event details. The scheduled watch page can be shared, and viewers can opt into reminders; scheduling does not itself send video.
- Choose an encoder and configure its YouTube destination. Use the stream URL and stream key shown for the event or stream configuration. A software encoder sends from your computer; a cloud service sends from its infrastructure; compatible dedicated hardware sends directly from the device.
- Set playback and stream behavior. Load the recording or playlist into the chosen encoder or service and configure its repeat or schedule controls. The exact labels differ by product, so confirm that playback continues at the end of a file or playlist and that the feed does not stop after a single pass.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room. Confirm that the preview appears and stream health is acceptable. When the scheduled event is ready, select Go Live if required by the configuration. Check the auto-start and auto-stop settings when reusing a stream configuration; their state can affect whether the event starts or ends automatically.
- Verify access and monitoring. Open the watch page from the channel and test it on a mobile device. Check audio and video, and establish who or what will monitor the stream and respond to interruptions.

Protocol, codecs, and audio
YouTube’s live encoder settings guide recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs and AAC or MP3 audio. Use a codec and format supported by both the encoder and YouTube’s current guidance.

Bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframes
Choose resolution and frame rate for the source and audience, then set a bitrate the sending connection can sustain steadily. YouTube recommends a constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Its current bitrate table lists 720p at 30 fps with a recommended bitrate of 2 Mbps and a range maximum of 6 Mbps. That is a platform setting for that output format, not a universal target for every stream or connection; consult the current table for the format you select.
Keep the stream key private
Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not expose it in screenshots, descriptions, or public support requests. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder or service using it.

Test continuity, archiving, and copyright before launch
Test the whole path
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. For a continuous broadcast, use that lead time to check the preview, watch-page and mobile access, audio and video quality, monitoring, and recovery procedure. If you use a backup encoder, test failover before depending on it.
Plan for interruptions and long broadcasts
A 24/7 stream needs a response plan for a lost connection, stopped playback, computer restart, or dropped YouTube feed. Confirm how your chosen method detects an interruption, whether it resumes automatically, and how you will know when intervention is needed. Do not assume a single long broadcast will create a complete replay: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If a complete record matters, arrange separate recording or shorter segments and verify YouTube’s current handling.

Use video you have the right to stream
Before making recordings public, check that you have the necessary rights to the video, music, and other included material. Replaying prerecorded content does not remove copyright obligations. YouTube’s copyright information explains its copyright policies. Also review YouTube’s current live-streaming rules and any monetization policies that apply to your channel; do not assume that continuous playback guarantees discovery, audience growth, or revenue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | Encoder has not connected, or the event destination details are wrong | Confirm the event is ready, the encoder is running, and the stream URL and key match the intended YouTube configuration. Check the encoder’s connection status. |
| Stream starts but stops at the end of a video | Playback is set to play once rather than repeat, or the playlist is not configured to continue | Check the playback or playlist repeat setting in the encoder or service and test through the end of a file before launch. |
| Video stutters or stream health degrades | The sending connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate, or the source/encoder is overloaded | Check YouTube’s stream-health information and the encoder’s load. Lower the output bitrate or resolution to a level the connection can sustain, then test again. |
| Audio or video is missing | Source, codec, or encoder configuration is incorrect | Check that the selected media includes the expected tracks, that the encoder is sending a supported codec, and that audio is audible in the preview. |
| Scheduled event does not start or ends unexpectedly | Auto-start or auto-stop behavior does not match the reused configuration, or the encoder feed is absent | Review those controls in YouTube Studio and confirm the encoder is connected before the event begins. |
| Stream cannot recover after YouTube drops it | The chosen method lacks automatic recovery, or its recovery configuration is incomplete | Check the service or encoder’s recovery behavior, reconnect procedure, and alerts. Test the recovery path before relying on it. |
| Replay is incomplete or absent | The broadcast ran 12 hours or longer, or archive handling differs from expectations | Do not rely on an automatic complete archive for a 24-hour stream. Make a separate recording or use shorter segments if a full record is needed. |
