Keep a thermoelectric generator (TEG) working by maintaining a temperature difference across the module—hot side hotter than cold side—without exceeding the limits for its exact model. As the heat source or surroundings change, protect the heat path, keep even mounting pressure while allowing expansion, and monitor temperatures at the module itself.

What changing temperatures do to a TEG

A TEG generates electricity from heat flowing through it. Its hot side must remain hotter than its cold side; the cold side must also shed heat rather than gradually warming toward the hot side. If the temperature difference across the module falls, generated output can fall as well. A hotter heat source alone does not guarantee more output if the cold-side heat-rejection path cannot keep up. Tecteg’s installation guidance explains the hot-to-cold heat path and warns that the cold side will not stay cool without heat removal.

Ambient temperature, airflow, fan or coolant operation, and contact with the heat source or sink can all change the temperatures the module actually experiences. For that reason, use the temperatures at the module’s hot and cold faces—not just the heat-source or room-temperature readings—to assess operation.

Use the limits for the exact module

There is no universal safe temperature range for all TEGs. Follow the maker’s documentation for the specific model, including which face is hot, which is cold, and any continuous or transient limits. Reversing the designated sides can damage the module family covered by Tecteg’s installation note; do not assume every module has interchangeable faces.

TEC1-12706 12V 60W 6A 40MMX40MM Heatsink Thermoelectric Cooler Cooling Peltier Plate Module 10pcs Compatible with Gaming Consoles/Devices
  • Please identify the "diymore" store.
  • Model: TEC1-12706.
  • Size: 40mm x 40mm x 3.6mm.
  • Refrigeration power: Qcmax 50-60W.
  • Operation Temperature: -30°C-70°C(-86℉-158℉)

For context, Tecteg’s installation note specifies continuous limits of 300°C on the hot side and 160°C on the cold side for the modules it covers. Those values are not general TEG limits. Separately, the Tecteg TEG1-24111-6.0 specification sheet describes a 200–300°C working range and gives an example with a 300°C hot side and 30°C cold side. Apply neither specification to another model unless its own documentation says so.

Set up the heat path and mounting for real conditions

Keep heat moving through the module

The heat source must transfer heat into the marked hot face, while a heat sink or other cooling arrangement removes heat from the cold face. Size and operate that cold-side path for the actual heat input and ambient conditions. If the design relies on a fan, airflow, liquid flow, or a particular heat-sink contact, confirm that it remains available as conditions change. A cold side that warms reduces the temperature difference available across the TEG.

Maintain contact without restraining expansion

Use a mount that applies even pressure across the module while permitting thermal expansion and contraction. Uneven contact can impair heat transfer; a mount that rigidly restrains expansion can add stress as temperatures swing. Tecteg’s TEG installation note calls for even pressure while allowing expansion. Ferrotec’s discussion of thermoelectric cooling modules also describes thermal stress and mounting risks; that is relevant engineering context, not a TEG-specific test or performance guarantee. Ferrotec’s reliability guidance discusses compression mounting and flexible interfaces for relevant cooling-module applications.

Check interface materials against the model instructions

Do not assume that thermal grease or another interface material is always required—or always suitable. One Tecteg sheet says the graphite surfaces on its TEG1-24111-6.0 eliminate the need for thermal grease. That instruction is specific to that model; use interface sheets, grease, or other materials only when compatible with the module’s own documentation.

Monitor temperatures and output as conditions change

  1. Identify the module. Read its model marking and documentation, locate the designated hot and cold faces, and confirm the applicable temperature limits before installation.
  2. Measure both module faces. Place temperature sensors at or as close as practical to the hot and cold ceramic faces. Compare those readings with the model limits; the source documents do not establish a universal sensor location or maintenance interval.
  3. Check the cold-side path under operating conditions. Observe whether the cold-side temperature rises when ambient temperature, heat input, or cooling conditions change. Verify any fan, airflow, liquid flow, or heat-sink contact the design depends on.
  4. Inspect mounting and interfaces. Look for loss of even contact or a mounting arrangement that prevents expansion. Confirm any interface material is allowed for that module.
  5. Record comparable output readings. When voltage or power changes, record hot-side temperature, cold-side temperature, electrical load, and relevant cooling conditions. Compare results only at comparable conditions; a voltage reading at open circuit is not the same as power delivered to a load.

For frequent temperature swings, stay within the model’s guidance on temperature excursions and ramp rates. Avoid rigidly bonding dissimilar materials without engineering approval. Ferrotec identifies cycle count, temperature excursion, upper cycle temperature, and rate of temperature change as factors in the thermal-cycle life of cooling modules. These considerations are useful caution, but do not establish TEG lifespan or a TEG-specific service interval.

How to read published output figures

Published values describe specific test conditions, not what every installation should produce. Tecteg’s 2016 specification sheet for the TEG1-24111-6.0 reports 17.7 V open-circuit voltage and 17.6 W matched-load output at a stated 300°C hot side and 30°C cold side. Open-circuit voltage is measured without a load; matched-load power is a different operating condition. Neither figure is a universal expectation for other modules or assembled systems.

The Tecteg TEG2-07025HT-SS specification lists matched-load values at several temperature differences and notes that electrical resistance, system construction, and thermal resistance affect actual output. Its revision date is not established in the available specification information. When comparing modules, compare temperature limits, available temperature difference, output at the stated load, heat-path thermal resistance, mounting needs, and interface compatibility—not wattage alone.

What not to infer from thermal-cycle figures

Ferrotec reports 68,000 cycles as MTBF for a group of SuperTEC cooling modules cycled between 30°C and 100°C with a five-minute cycle. The cited page does not state the test publication date. This is a result for those cooling modules and that test setup—not a TEG lifespan estimate. The cited specifications do not establish a universal TEG lifetime, output, maintenance interval, or safe temperature range.
