First, position the speaker according to its model’s instructions and test it while lying in your usual sleeping position. Pillow speakers differ: some sit inside a pillowcase, some slide into sleeves, and some pillows need to be turned so their speakers face away from the mattress. If the sound is still too quiet or muffled, check speaker orientation, pillow material, volume, and connections before replacing anything.
Start with placement that matches your speaker
Lie down as you normally do and play audio while you locate where your ear rests against the pillow. Adjust the speaker to that spot, then listen from your usual position; a speaker that sounds clear in your hand may be blocked or shifted once you lie down.
Avantree Slumber 2: place it inside the pillowcase
Avantree’s Slumber 2 low-volume guide, dated August 21, 2026, says to put the speaker inside the pillowcase, keep it on top of the pillow rather than underneath, and move it close to the area where your ear rests. Its advice is specific to the Slumber 2, so use your own model’s manual if its construction differs.
Drop Pillow: adjust the speakers in their sleeves
Drop Pillow speakers sit in sleeves beneath the outer pillowcase. Its FAQ recommends playing audio and sliding the speakers within those sleeves until they are directly over your ears. This gives you a way to correct shifting without adding an improvised clip or adhesive.

Sound Pillow: turn it over if the speakers face the mattress
For muffled sound, Sound Pillow’s manual says to turn the pillow over so the speakers do not face the mattress. That orientation advice is for Sound Pillow; do not assume that turning every pillow speaker over is the right fix.
Work through sliding and muffled audio separately
If the speaker slides away from your ear
- Check whether the design has sleeves or another intended positioning feature, then adjust the speaker while audio is playing.
- Lie in your normal position as you make the adjustment, so you are locating the speaker against your actual resting spot rather than guessing while sitting up.
- If the speaker is loose and has no sleeve, follow its manufacturer’s guidance. The product instructions above do not establish a universal clip, adhesive, or fastening method.
If the sound is muffled
- Check the model-specific orientation instructions. If you have a Sound Pillow and its speakers face the mattress, try the manual’s recommendation to turn the pillow over.
- Move the speaker closer to your ear’s resting spot and listen again while lying down.
- Consider the pillow itself. Sleep Solutions says latex and memory-foam pillows are denser than fiber or feather pillows and may absorb or muffle sound from standard pillow speakers. The retailer recommends an amplified pillow speaker for those materials; this is retailer guidance, not a published comparative test.
Dense foam or latex does not automatically mean you need a new speaker. Try the free placement and orientation checks first. If considering a replacement, compare whether it can be positioned near the ear, whether it suits your pillow’s material and thickness, whether it is standard or amplified, and how it connects and is controlled. Available product information does not provide standardized performance measurements for comparing models.
