Start by checking the exact SSD’s operating-temperature specification and its SMART temperature during the workload that concerns you. PCIe 5.0 does not set one universal safe temperature or throttling point. Check your motherboard’s M.2 heatsink and fit before buying another cooler; some Gen5 drives also have cooling built in.
Check the drive’s temperature and specification first
Find the exact SSD model and consult its manufacturer’s specification for its operating-temperature range. Then read its SMART temperature while running the sustained transfer or other workload that causes concern. A temperature reading is useful in context, but it is not automatically the controller’s temperature or the drive’s throttling threshold.
For example, Corsair lists an operating range of 0°C to +70°C for its MP700. That figure applies to the listed MP700 model; it is not a PCIe 5.0 standard or a specification for other SSDs. The cited manufacturers do not establish a common Gen5 throttling temperature.
Watch for performance degradation during sustained work, but do not infer a precise temperature threshold unless the drive maker publishes one. Seagate’s general educational article says demanding workloads can bring NVMe temperatures into a 70–80°C range where protective throttling may activate; that broad guidance is not a specification for a particular Gen5 model. Does an NVMe SSD need a heatsink?
It depends on the SSD, its workload, and the system’s cooling. Kingston says some NVMe SSDs can work without added cooling, while others benefit from a heatsink or better airflow. TEAMGROUP’s GC PRO product guidance takes a stronger position for that drive, stating that Gen5 NVMe SSDs may generate substantial heat during high-speed transmission and that a heatsink or active cooler is essential to prevent overheating-related throttling. That is TEAMGROUP’s product guidance, not an independent comparative test.
Before adding anything, check whether the motherboard already has an M.2 heatsink for the slot you are using, and confirm that it fits the drive. Some SSDs include their own cooling assembly. ADATA describes the LEGEND 970 as having dual-layer aluminum fins and a micro fan, so an additional cooler may be unnecessary or incompatible. ADATA advises checking installation space and the motherboard manual; it also warns that removing the LEGEND 970’s heatsink is considered man-made damage and is not covered by warranty.

Choose a cooling approach that fits the drive and system
| Cooling option | What to check | Example from the manufacturer |
|---|---|---|
| Motherboard M.2 heatsink | Confirm the heatsink covers the SSD, its thermal pad contacts the drive correctly, and the assembly fits with other components. | MSI describes its SPATIUM M580 FROZR as a passive heatpipe-and-finned solution. MSI claims it can reduce temperatures by up to 20°C; this is a vendor claim for that product, not a general benchmark. |
| SSD-integrated cooling | Check the complete SSD dimensions and required clearance; do not assume the drive will fit beneath a motherboard cover. | ADATA’s LEGEND 970 uses dual-layer aluminum fins and a micro fan, according to ADATA. |
| Separate active cooler | Check compatibility, physical space, and airflow around the M.2 slot before installation. | TEAMGROUP recommends a heatsink or active cooler in its GC PRO product guidance. The cited pages do not provide a controlled comparison of this option against other designs. |

Check fit and installation before adding a cooler
Cooling accessories can fail to help if they do not fit or make proper contact. Before buying or installing one, verify the SSD and cooler dimensions, motherboard clearance, and whether another heatsink or fan is already present. Use the motherboard manual to check the M.2 slot layout and installation constraints. If the SSD has an integrated heatsink, follow its manufacturer’s instructions rather than removing it without permission.

- Confirm the reading: Record the SSD’s SMART temperature during the workload that causes concern, and compare it with the operating specification for that exact model.
- Inspect the cooling fit: Check that any heatsink is compatible and that its thermal pad contacts the SSD correctly. Follow the board or cooler instructions for installation.
- Improve local airflow where practical: Consider whether air can move around the M.2 slot and whether nearby components or covers obstruct the cooling setup.
- Check for firmware guidance: Consult the SSD maker’s support instructions. TEAMGROUP specifically recommends checking firmware with its SMART Tool.
- Contact the drive maker if the issue persists: Share the model, SMART reading, workload, and any performance changes so support can interpret them against that drive’s specifications.
ADATA says its SSD Toolbox can display operating temperature, while Kingston notes that SMART temperatures can be read with vendor utilities or general system tools. Use a suitable tool for your drive and treat the reading according to the manufacturer’s guidance.
