The safest way to clean a mechanical keyboard is to unplug it first, remove loose debris with short bursts of upright compressed air, and use a barely damp cloth for the key tops. For a more thorough clean, remove the keycaps with a wire puller, clean the exposed plate without pouring liquid into the switches, and reinstall only completely dry caps. A practical routine has three levels: a quick weekly clean, a keycap-off clean about monthly, and a deeper keycap soak every 6–12 months—or sooner if you eat at your desk.
Mechanical switches can be rated for 50 to 80 million keypresses, according to HP’s 2026 cleaning guide. Dust and crumbs can still make keys feel gritty or stop them responding properly, so regular, careful cleaning helps preserve the board without exposing its electronics to unnecessary moisture.
What do you need before cleaning a mechanical keyboard?
Gather a wire keycap puller, a soft brush, microfiber cloths, and—if you are cleaning the plate or a sticky switch—90% or higher isopropyl alcohol (IPA). A bowl and mild dish soap are only for detached keycaps. You do not need to buy a full kit: a mechanical keyboard cleaning kit typically bundles a puller, brush, cloth, and sometimes cleaning gel, but the puller is the key tool for a safe keycap-off clean.

Avoid metal tools that can scratch caps or the keyboard.
- Compressed air with a straw nozzle: For loose dust and crumbs. Keep the can upright and use short bursts.
- Soft-bristle brush: An anti-static brush is a good choice for the gaps around switches and plate cutouts.
- Microfiber cloth and cotton swabs: Use fresh cloth sections and only dampen them slightly; never spray cleaner onto the keyboard.
- 90–99% IPA: For stubborn residue on the plate or cleaning a sticky switch. Keep it off printed legends unless the keycap material and printing are known to tolerate it.
- Small plastic or glass bowl and mild dish soap: For washing detached keycaps only.
Optional tools include an electric duster as a reusable alternative to canned air, a switch puller for a hot-swap board, and keyboard cleaning gel for dust in tight spaces. Do not use a high-powered vacuum unless it is designed to be anti-static; Keychron’s warning, reported by Simply Maid in 2026, is that a harsh vacuum can pose a static risk. If you use gel, discard it when it becomes dirty rather than pressing debris back into the keyboard.
IPA is highly flammable (H225, according to a 2022 Diggers safety-data sheet reported by Simply Maid in 2026). Work away from flames, let the alcohol evaporate fully, and do not power the keyboard until it is dry.

How often should you clean a mechanical keyboard?
Use a quick clean weekly, a keycap-off clean about monthly, and a keycap soak every 6–12 months as a useful baseline. Clean more often if you eat at your desk, type for long sessions, or notice crumbs, sticky keys, or a gritty feel.
| Level | What it involves | Time and frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Quick clean | Unplug, remove loose debris, and wipe key tops without removing caps | About 2 minutes; weekly, or every 2–3 days for heavy users (HP, 2026) |
| Regular clean | Remove keycaps and clean the plate and cap surfaces | 15–20 minutes; monthly or every 1–2 months (HP, 2026) |
| Deep clean | Soak detached keycaps and clean the exposed plate and case | 45–60 minutes of active work; every 6–12 months (HP, 2026), plus drying time |
Those intervals are starting points, not a requirement to take apart a clean board. Keyboardguides’ 2026 schedule varies by use: it suggests a yearly deep clean for casual use of 1–3 hours a day, every six months for office or work-from-home use of 6–8 hours, and every 3–4 months for heavy gaming of 8 or more hours. Other guides recommend more frequent deep cleans. If the board is visibly dirty, clean it rather than waiting for a calendar date.
How do you clean a mechanical keyboard without removing keys?
For a quick surface clean, power the keyboard down, angle it so debris can fall out, use short bursts of upright compressed air, and wipe the key tops with a nearly dry microfiber cloth. This is the right first step for ordinary dust and crumbs; it will not remove grime trapped below the keycaps.
- Disconnect power. Unplug a wired USB or USB-C keyboard. Turn off a wireless model and remove its batteries before cleaning. If the board has a rechargeable battery that cannot be removed, power it off and do not connect it during cleaning.
- Remove loose debris. Hold the keyboard upside down over a bin or towel and gently tap it. Do not hit it hard; Logitech’s advice, reported by Simply Maid in 2026, warns that a hard whack can damage the board. Do not shake a wet keyboard, because that can spread liquid.
- Blow out the gaps. Keep a compressed-air can upright, insert the straw between keys, and use short bursts of about 1–2 seconds. Angle the keyboard so debris exits instead of settling elsewhere. Work outdoors or over a trash can if possible, and never invert the can because liquid propellant could escape.
- Wipe the tops. Use a dry microfiber cloth, or dampen it very lightly with water and wring it until almost dry. Wipe the key tops, then dry them immediately with a second cloth.
- Check the result. Once the keyboard is dry, reconnect it and type-test. If a key remains gritty or sticky, move to a keycap-off clean rather than forcing the key or spraying liquid into it.
Compressed air is the majority approach in the cited OEM and editorial cleaning guides, but it is not the only view: Keyboardguides (2026) advises avoiding canned air because it can push debris into switch housings or cause condensation, and recommends a roller-less handheld vacuum instead. If you choose a vacuum, follow Keychron’s anti-static warning and avoid a high-powered household model that is not anti-static.
How do you remove keycaps without breaking them?
Photograph the layout, use a keycap puller, and lift each cap straight up with even pressure. Start with ordinary 1u keys and leave large stabilized keys—such as the spacebar, Enter, Shift, and Backspace—until last.
- Take a clear photo. Include the full keyboard so you can restore unusual layouts and modifier-key positions later.
- Choose a puller. A wire puller is a safe default. Slide its loops under two opposite edges of the cap. Do not use a knife, screwdriver, or other sharp tool to pry it off; Keychron’s warning, reported by Simply Maid, notes that sharp tools can crack or scratch keycaps.
- Lift evenly. Pull straight up. Do not twist, rock, or yank. If a cap resists, reseat the puller so it grips both sides evenly and try again with controlled pressure. Angled force can damage a keycap stem; on some hot-swap boards it can also stress or dislodge a switch socket.
- Leave stabilised keys until last. Large keys use wires or clips as well as a switch stem. Removing them after the smaller keys gives you room to see how the stabilizer is attached and reduces the chance of pulling at it awkwardly.
When putting a large cap back, align its stabilizer clips and hook the wire into the keycap clips before pressing the cap down. Tom’s Guide’s 2025 cleaning guide describes this alignment step; forcing the cap straight onto the stem without engaging the stabilizer can leave the key loose or uneven.

How do you do a regular keycap-off clean?
A keycap-off clean takes about 15–20 minutes according to HP (2026). It lets you remove dust and surface grime from the plate and switches without opening the keyboard case or pouring liquid into the switch housings.
- Unplug or power off the board, remove batteries if applicable, and photograph the layout.
- Remove the keycaps carefully. Work through the ordinary keys first; take the spacebar, Enter, Shift, and Backspace off last.
- Clear the exposed plate. Use short bursts of upright compressed air or a soft brush to move loose debris out. Brush gently around the switch openings and stabilizer channels.
- Wipe only where needed. For oily marks or stubborn spots, put a small amount of 90%+ IPA on a cloth or swab, not directly on the board. The cloth should be barely damp, not wet. Avoid flooding the switches. For routine plate cleaning, dry brushing and air are safer than adding liquid.
- Clean the caps. Wipe them with a dry cloth or, if their material and legends can tolerate it, a cloth lightly dampened with 90%+ IPA. HP allows this method in its 2026 regular-clean procedure. If you do not know whether the caps are ABS or how their legends are printed, use mild soap and water on detached caps instead.
- Let everything dry. HP gives 10–15 minutes for keycaps wiped with alcohol. Wait longer if any part still feels damp or smells strongly of alcohol.
- Reinstall and test. Use your photo to restore the layout. Press each cap straight down, reconnect the keyboard only when dry, and test every key.
Do not pour or spray IPA onto the plate, switch, or PCB. Use a cloth, swab, or a controlled drop only for a targeted sticky-switch repair. The goal of this routine is to lift surface oil and debris without introducing enough liquid to seep into electronics.
How do you deep-clean and wash keycaps?
Remove the keycaps, soak them in warm—not hot—soapy water for 30–60 minutes, rinse away all soap, and let them dry completely before reinstalling. The water and soap are for detached keycaps only; keep the keyboard, switches, and PCB away from the bowl.
- Prepare the keyboard. Disconnect power, photograph the layout, and remove all caps using the puller procedure above. Keep the caps together in a bowl so none are lost.
- Soak the caps. Use warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap. HP, Try Mech Keys, KeebsForAll, and Corsair’s guidance as reported by Simply Maid converge on a 30–60-minute soak. Do not use hot or boiling water: heat can warp keycaps, particularly ABS.
- Clean gently. Use your fingers or a soft-bristle brush to loosen grime. Dye-sublimated and double-shot PBT legends generally tolerate gentle brushing better than pad-printed legends, which can wear. Use a soft cloth rather than hard scrubbing on ABS caps.
- Rinse thoroughly. Rinse until no soap remains. Soap residue can feel tacky and attract dust.
- Dry fully. Shake excess water from the caps and place them on a clean towel in a ventilated area. Let them dry overnight if possible, checking that water has left the stem wells. Guides differ on whether caps should sit stem-side up or down while drying; the essential precaution is to make sure the stem recesses are completely dry. HP’s 2026 guide gives 2–4 hours as a drying window, but other guidance ranges from several hours to overnight, and Kerno (2026) recommends at least 12 hours stem-side down. Do not reinstall a cap that is even slightly damp.
- Clean the exposed board while the caps dry. Turn the keyboard upside down and tap gently, then use air or a soft brush on the plate. Use tweezers for debris inside a housing rather than pushing it further in with more air. Wipe stubborn plate spots with a barely damp cloth or swab, keeping liquid away from switches and electronics.
- Reassemble and test. Reinstall caps from your photo. Engage the stabilizer wires on large keys before pressing the caps into place, then test every key.
Do not put keycaps in a dishwasher. Dishwasher heat and moisture can warp caps and damage legends; HP’s advice against dishwashing was reported by Simply Maid in 2026. Never wash the whole keyboard under a tap. Water and dish soap belong in the bowl with detached caps, not on the keyboard.
Should you clean ABS and PBT keycaps differently?
Yes. ABS is more prone to visible shine and can warp in hot water, while PBT is generally more durable and tolerates slightly warmer water. If you are unsure which plastic you have, choose mild soap and water for detached caps and avoid alcohol on their legends.
| Keycap material | Cleaning considerations |
|---|---|
| ABS | Use warm—not hot—soapy water and gentle handling. Oils can make ABS look shiny over time. Avoid harsh scrubbing, and do not assume IPA is safe for printed legends. |
| PBT | Generally more resistant to wear and slightly warmer water, but still avoid hot water and aggressive scrubbing. Some guides permit 70% IPA for disinfection; confirm the printing method first. |
| Unknown plastic or legend type | Use mild soap and water on detached caps. HHKB’s warning, quoted by KeebsForAll, says IPA is more likely to ruin ABS caps; when the plastic is unknown, soap and water is the cautious choice. |
Material is only part of the issue: the legend treatment matters too. Dye-sublimated and double-shot legends are typically more resistant to gentle brushing than pad-printed markings. If the legends are printed on the surface, avoid alcohol and abrasive scrubbing even if you believe the cap itself is PBT.

Can you use isopropyl alcohol on a mechanical keyboard?
Yes, in a controlled amount. Use 90% or higher IPA on a cloth or swab for the plate, switch housing, or other internal surfaces; do not pour it into the keyboard. For keycap and case surfaces, 70% wipes are used in some equipment-cleaning guidance, but 90%+ dries faster and is the safer default for mechanical internals.
HP’s 2026 guide recommends 90%+ IPA and warns that 70% rubbing alcohol contains more water, which can slow drying and expose components to extra moisture. Some cleaning guidance permits 70% on exterior surfaces, but that does not make it appropriate to flood a switch or PCB. If using a 70% wipe on a keycap or case, wring it nearly dry and keep it away from printed legends unless their material is known to tolerate alcohol.

How do you fix a sticky key on a mechanical keyboard?
First remove the keycap and clean around the switch. If the switch itself remains sticky, HP’s 2026 first-line method is 1–2 drops of 90%+ IPA in the switch housing, followed by 20–30 presses of the exposed stem and 10–15 minutes of drying before testing.
- Disconnect the keyboard and pull the affected keycap straight up.
- Remove visible hair or crumbs with tweezers or a soft brush. A cotton swab lightly dampened with IPA can clean around the switch.
- If the switch still feels sticky, apply 1–2 small drops of 90%+ IPA into its housing with a dropper or a carefully controlled cloth corner. Do not pour alcohol over the keyboard.
- Press the exposed switch stem 20–30 times to work the IPA through the mechanism.
- Wait 10–15 minutes or longer until fully dry, then reconnect and test. If it still sticks, one repeat is reasonable; if it continues to fail, replace the switch or seek repair.
The symptom can help identify the next step. A gritty mid-press may be debris; a key that stays down may have a damaged spring; repeated characters can indicate a worn switch contact; and a key that never registers may require switch or PCB inspection. These are diagnostic possibilities, not guarantees. On a hot-swap board, a compatible switch can usually be pulled and replaced with the proper switch puller. On a soldered board, replacement can require desoldering and may be a job for a technician.
Lubrication is an advanced maintenance step, not the first fix for a dirty key. If the switch is clean but has an unwanted feel or sound, switch lubrication requires opening the switch and applying the correct product sparingly. Too much lubricant can make a switch feel mushy, and opening switches on a soldered board requires additional skill.

What should you do if you spill liquid on your keyboard?
Disconnect power immediately, turn the board upside down to drain, and do not switch it on to see whether it still works. After a spill, the priority is to prevent an electrical short and remove residue before it dries into the switches.
- Cut power at once. Unplug the cable or turn off the wireless keyboard and remove its batteries. Do not reconnect it while wet.
- Drain without shaking. Turn the keyboard upside down over a towel or sink and leave it inverted for at least 30 minutes. Blot visible liquid; do not wipe aggressively or shake the board, which can spread liquid into more areas.
- Remove affected caps. Once the immediate liquid is drained, remove keycaps in the spill area and blot the plate and switch tops. Keep liquid away from battery bays.
- Address residue based on the spill. Water often leaves little residue if the board was unplugged and turned over promptly. Coffee or tea can leave residue that needs cleaning. Soda, juice, and sweet coffee can leave sugar that crystallizes and jams stems or stabilizer wires; these spills need a thorough clean, preferably before the residue hardens.
- Clean affected switches carefully. HP’s 2026 spill procedure recommends 1–2 drops of 90%+ IPA per affected switch, followed by 20–30 stem actuations and 10–15 minutes of drying. Use a controlled amount and wipe contaminated plate areas with a barely damp IPA cloth or swab.
- Wait before testing. Air-dry the board upside down in a warm, ventilated place for at least 24 hours, HP’s minimum on its mechanical-keyboard guide. A conservative 24–48-hour wait is appropriate if liquid reached the internals or the board remains damp. A fan is acceptable; do not use a hot hairdryer.
Do not power on a board simply because the outside looks dry. Liquid can remain beneath switches or on the PCB. If a sugary drink reached the keyboard, if a large amount of liquid entered the case, or if keys still fail after a full drying period, consider professional inspection. Opening the case to inspect the PCB is an advanced step; check the warranty first, especially for an HP or HyperX keyboard that is still covered.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you never use to clean a mechanical keyboard?
Avoid anything that adds uncontrolled liquid, heat, abrasive force, or static risk. In particular, do not clean a powered keyboard, pour cleaner into switches, wash the board under a tap, or use a dishwasher for keycaps.
- 70% IPA inside switches or on the PCB: Prefer 90%+ for internals because lower concentrations contain more water and dry more slowly.
- Hot or boiling water: It can warp keycaps, especially ABS. Warm water is enough for detached caps.
- Dishwasher or tap water: A dishwasher can expose caps to damaging heat and moisture; washing the whole board under a tap risks the electronics.
- WD-40, glass cleaner, bleach, acetone, or nail-polish remover: These can damage plastics, legends, or switches. Keychron warns that WD-40 can damage plastic and gum up switches; acetone can dissolve keycap plastics.
- Paper towels or abrasive sponges: They can leave lint or scratch surfaces and damage printed legends.
- Sharp tools or forceful prying: Knives and screwdrivers can scratch caps or break their stems. Use a proper puller and lift evenly.
- Uncontrolled spray or liquid: Spray the cloth, not the keyboard. Do not pour IPA or water over switches or the PCB.
- Heat from a hairdryer: Heat can warp ABS and damage keyboard parts. Let the board air-dry instead.
- A high-powered, non-anti-static vacuum: Use compressed air carefully or an anti-static vacuum designed for electronics.
How do hot-swap, soldered, and wireless keyboards change the process?
The cleaning basics are the same, but switch replacement and power handling differ. A hot-swap board lets you remove a compatible switch with a switch puller, while a soldered board may need repair skills; a wireless board must be switched off and have removable batteries taken out before cleaning.
- Hot-swap switches: If a switch remains faulty after cleaning, use a compatible switch puller and lift the switch straight out. Never lever it sideways. Check the board’s layout and switch compatibility before replacing one.
- Soldered switches: Switch removal can require desoldering. Do not force a switch from the plate; consult a repair technician if you are not equipped for solder work.
- Wireless keyboards: Turn the board off and remove batteries before cleaning. Keep all liquid away from the battery compartment. If its battery is built in, power the keyboard off and avoid connecting it while cleaning or drying.
- Stabilized keys: The spacebar, Enter, Shift, and Backspace may have wire stabilizers. Remove them last and ensure each wire is hooked into its clips when reinstalling.
- Warranty coverage: Check the manufacturer’s terms before opening the case or doing switch-level repairs. HP advises HyperX owners with a board still under warranty to contact support before this kind of maintenance.
How can you keep a mechanical keyboard cleaner for longer?
Prevention reduces how often the board needs a deep clean. Wash and dry your hands before long typing sessions, keep food and drinks away from the keyboard, and cover it when it is not in use.

- Use a desk mat and keep drinks outside the area where a spill could reach the keyboard.
- Put on a dust cover or clean cloth overnight, particularly in a dusty room.
- Do a quick wipe or air clean regularly instead of waiting until dirt accumulates.
- Store spare keycap sets in a sealed bag or container.
- Clean sooner than scheduled if you eat at the desk or notice sticky keys.
Once a keyboard is clean and dry, keep the same light routine: weekly surface care, a keycap-off clean roughly monthly, and a soak when the caps visibly need it. HP says a well-maintained mechanical keyboard can last 10 years or more; that is a guide’s expectation, not a guarantee for every board.
Is advanced maintenance such as switch lubrication necessary?
No. Lubrication is optional and not needed to remove dust, crumbs, or surface grime. Consider it only after cleaning, when you understand the switch type and want to change its feel or sound.
Enthusiast guidance commonly distinguishes linear switches from tactile or clicky ones: Krytox GPL 205 Grade 0 (205g0) is listed for linear switches, while Tribosys 3203 or 3204 is listed for tactile switches. Some guides advise against lubricating clicky switches; the right method depends on the switch design. Applying too much lubricant can make a switch feel mushy. MonacoKeys (2026) estimates that a 5 g jar of 205g0 can cover around 500 switches when applied thinly, but that is an enthusiast-use figure, not a cleaning requirement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Opening a switch requires the right opener and careful reassembly. On a soldered board, reaching switches may require desoldering. If your goal is simply to restore a sticky key, try the targeted cleaning steps first and replace a faulty switch if needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I clean my mechanical keyboard while it is plugged in?
No. Disconnect a wired board or turn off a wireless one before cleaning, and remove batteries where possible. This also prevents an accidental keypress or spill from reaching a powered device.
Can I use a hairdryer to make keycaps dry faster?
Air-drying is safer. Heat can warp ABS and damage stabilizer parts; if you need to move air, use a fan in a ventilated area rather than applying heat.
Can keyboard cleaning gel replace compressed air?
It can pick up fine dust in tight spots, but it is optional and does not replace removing grime or washing detached caps. Discard the gel once it looks dirty so it does not redeposit debris.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
