First find which connection is failing: the mount’s adhesive base, its suction cup, its vent clip, or the phone-to-magnet connection. Each needs a different fix. Clean and reinstall the failed connection according to the mount’s own instructions, and check that the dashboard surface, vent blades, and phone or case are compatible.
Identify what is slipping
Watch what moves when the phone drops or the mount shifts. If the base lifts from the dashboard, troubleshoot the adhesive. If the cup releases from glass or a smooth surface, check the suction seal. If the mount tilts or falls with the vent blade, check the clip fit. If the mount stays put but the phone comes away, focus on the magnetic connection and the phone, case, or ring.
Fix an adhesive base lifting from the dashboard
- Clean the mounting spot. Remove dust, oil, and debris. Use an alcohol wipe only if the mount maker’s instructions and the vehicle’s surface-care guidance allow it, then let the area dry.
- Choose a suitable location. Use a flat, compatible area. Cygnett recommends avoiding direct sunlight where possible.
- Reinstall as directed. Remove the protective film and press the adhesive firmly into place. Cygnett’s instructions specify firm pressure for one minute; other mounts may differ.
- Wait for the specified period before using it. For the Aerpro APMSMG1 adhesive base, the manual says to wait 4–5 hours and not use the holder during that time. This is a model-specific instruction, not a universal cure time.
Follow the instructions for your exact mount rather than assuming another brand’s pressure or waiting time applies. The reviewed instructions do not establish superglue, sanding the dashboard, or adding stronger tape as safe general repairs.
Fix a suction cup that keeps releasing
- Check for dust, oil, moisture, residue on the cup, or a textured mounting surface.
- Clean the mounting area and suction pad using the maker’s instructions. For its X16, MAGIC JOHN advises wiping the area with an alcohol wipe and letting it dry, then rinsing the silicone pad and air-drying it.
- Place the cup on a clean, smooth, flat surface and fully lock its lever or vacuum switch.
MAGIC JOHN says smooth hard plastic or flat glass works best for its X16 suction mount and does not recommend textured leather. That guidance applies to the X16; check the manual for your mount before using a different surface or cleaning method.

Fix a vent clip that shifts or drops
Check the vent’s blade shape and firmness before tightening the clip. The Aerpro APMSMG1 hook vent mount is designed for flat air-vent blades. Its manual instructs users to tighten the fixing plate against the hook, confirm the clip is firmly fixed, and periodically check clip tightness.
If the clip does not match the blade geometry, or the blades flex under the mount, tightening may not solve the problem. Choose a mount style compatible with that vent or a suitable dashboard or glass mounting surface instead.

Fix a phone that slides off the magnetic head
If the mount remains attached, there is no reason to re-stick its base: inspect the phone-to-magnet connection. Check whether the phone, case, and any magnetic ring or plate are compatible with the mount and correctly positioned.
Compatibility claims are product-specific. Aerpro describes the APMSMG1 as designed for MagSafe-compatible iPhones and cases, including iPhone 12 and later models; do not treat that as a compatibility list for other mounts. Consult your mount’s instructions for the phone and case combinations it supports.

When to replace a part or change mount style
Consider a compatible replacement adhesive pad if the mount itself is sound, its mounting surface is suitable, and the manufacturer supports replacing the pad. If the dashboard material, suction surface, or vent design is incompatible, replacing the whole mount with a style suited to the vehicle may be the more practical fix. A magnetic case or ring only helps when it matches the mount’s system.
Compare options by the surface or vent they fit, their mounting method, installation and waiting instructions, phone-and-case compatibility, and whether the installed mount stays out of the driver’s view. No failure-rate figures establish that one mounting style is universally more reliable.

Use and adjust the mount safely
- Install it where it does not obstruct the driver’s view. The Aerpro APMSMG1 manual warns against installing its holder where it obstructs the driver’s view.
- Pull over safely before adjusting the mount or phone. The Aerpro manual says not to operate the phone and holder while driving.
- For that Aerpro vent mount, twist and slide the phone off rather than pulling straight away, which the manual says helps reduce the risk of damaging vent blades.
- The Aerpro manual also advises keeping its magnet away from medical devices and not storing a magnetic credit card in the phone case against the mount.
These are cautions in the Aerpro APMSMG1 manual. Mounting rules may vary by location; the guidance here does not establish local legal requirements.
