To keep a Home Assistant dashboard visible by preventing the screen from timing out, turn on Keep screen on in the Android Companion app: open Settings > Companion app, scroll to Other settings, and enable the option. It applies while Home Assistant’s WebView activity is active. If you also need to stop someone switching to another app, use Android’s separate App pinning feature.
Choose the control that matches what you need

Keep the screen awake while viewing the dashboard
- Open the Home Assistant Companion app.
- Go to Settings > Companion app.
- Scroll to Other settings.
- Turn on Keep screen on.
- Open the dashboard and check that the display stays awake as intended.
Home Assistant says this setting prevents the screen from turning off and ignores Android’s built-in Sleep setting while the WebView activity is active. If the labels differ, they may have shifted with the app version.
Keep Home Assistant in the foreground with App pinning
Pinning is useful when another person will use the phone for a dashboard and should not casually switch apps. It is separate from keeping the screen awake, so enable both controls if you need both effects.
- In Android Settings, find App pinning under the relevant Security settings and turn it on. The exact path varies by device and Android version; consult the phone maker’s instructions if you cannot find it.
- Open Home Assistant and navigate to the dashboard you want to show.
- Open Overview or Recents, tap the Home Assistant app icon, then tap Pin.
- To leave the pinned app, use the unpin gesture or button combination shown for the phone’s navigation mode. If prompted, enter the device PIN, pattern, or password.
Use Home Assistant as the launcher on a dedicated display
This option is intended for a phone or tablet dedicated to Home Assistant, rather than a personal phone that needs normal launcher behavior. Home Assistant becomes the destination for the Home button and opens after a reboot, but ordinary app-drawer access and Back-button behavior change.

- In Home Assistant, open Settings > Companion app.
- Scroll to Device home screen and enable Use as Home app (launcher).
- On Android’s Change home app screen, choose Home Assistant.
- In Home Assistant, create a streamlined dashboard for the display and set it as the default under Settings > Dashboards.
- If different displays need different defaults, consider using a dedicated Home Assistant user for each device.
What remote screen commands can and cannot do
Home Assistant notification commands include a screen-on command and an optional keep_screen_on command. The screen-on command does not remove or disable Android’s lock screen, and the optional keep-screen-on behavior lasts only while the WebView activity is active. Kiosk commands—for example, showing a screensaver, opening a camera, changing brightness, reloading, or returning to the default dashboard—are handled only while the Companion app is open in the foreground. These commands do not force a closed app to remain visible or guarantee an awake screen in every device state.
