Before troubleshooting a mod after a game update, back up your saves, note the game build and mod versions, then check the mod’s official compatibility notes and dependencies. Test the game with mods disabled before reinstalling or changing files. “Browser mod” can mean a conventional game mod or a browser extension/userscript that changes a game page; the latter also depends on the browser and script manager.
Why a game update can break a mod
A patch can change game behavior or interfaces that a mod relies on, but it does not necessarily break every mod. Larian Studios cautions that mod risks increase around game updates and says supported mods aim for greater compatibility (Larian Studios mod guidance). A mod that worked on the previous build is not automatically compatible with the current one.
Compatibility can depend on several versions at once: the game, its mod loader, the mod itself, and any required dependencies. Some mod formats also declare minimum game or API versions and dependencies in a manifest, as described in the Stardew Valley modder guide.
Back up and record the setup before changing anything
Copy important save files to a separate location before updating, removing, or reinstalling mods. A mod may change save data, and recovery is not guaranteed: Slime Rancher support warns that a mod-altered save may not be reversible and recommends a backup before installing mods (Slime Rancher save backup guidance). Its article was updated in 2022, so check current, game-specific support for exact backup locations and recovery steps.

Write down the game build, mod-loader version, mod version, and versions of required dependencies. This makes it easier to compare your setup with the author’s current compatibility information and gives support staff details they can act on.
Check compatibility and dependencies
Look at the mod’s official listing, author documentation, or in-game mod manager for an explicit statement that it supports your installed game build. Check required dependencies and the loader version as well; updating the mod alone may not resolve a mismatch elsewhere in the chain.

Do not assume that an old release is safe just because it worked before the patch. If the author has not marked a version compatible, wait for an update or ask through the project’s support channel. Update timing varies: Mod Engine’s August 2026 FAQ says it cannot provide a fixed ETA for update requests. That is guidance for that service, not a general estimate for mod authors (Mod Engine FAQ).
Test whether the mod is actually the cause
- Disable mods using the game’s supported method. For example, Larian’s troubleshooting guidance tells players to uncheck mods and retest the game (Larian Studios mod guidance).
- Reproduce the problem without mods. If it still happens, the issue may be in the base game or elsewhere in the setup. If it stops, the mod configuration is a likely place to investigate.
- Protect the save during the check. EA’s Sims 4 troubleshooting instructions tell players to exit without saving during the vanilla check before re-enabling mods. Follow the affected game’s own guidance; do not save a test session if the game warns that removing mods could affect the save (EA: Mods and game updates in The Sims 4).
A clean test narrows the cause without requiring you to delete every mod or reinstall the game immediately.

Re-enable compatible mods in a controlled way
- Install only versions identified as compatible with your game build, loader, and dependencies.
- Start with the smallest useful set. Add a mod or a small group, then launch the game and check whether the original problem returns.
- Use the same test case each time. Repeating the same action or loading the same backed-up test save makes results easier to compare.
- Stop when the problem returns. Remove or update the last-added mod, then verify its dependencies and compatibility notes before testing again.
Where a game offers an official mod manager, use its supported update and disable controls rather than guessing at file paths. The right procedure is game-specific; a file location or downgrade method for one title may be wrong for another.
If “browser mod” means a userscript or extension
A userscript that changes a game page has two separate compatibility layers: the site or browser-based game, and the browser plus userscript manager. Check that the script is updated and enabled, targets the affected site, and still has any permissions it needs. A game patch may not be the cause if the browser or manager changed instead.

For example, Tampermonkey’s changelog includes a userscript-injection permission change dated 2026-10-01. If a script stopped running around that time, review the manager’s current permission settings and changelog rather than assuming the game update broke it (Tampermonkey changelog).

- Game name and exact installed build
- Mod-loader and mod versions
- Versions of required dependencies
- Which mods are enabled
- The error message and relevant log, if the project asks for one
- Whether the issue also occurs with mods disabled
Do not assume every game supports rolling back to an earlier build, or that downgrading is safe for a save. Check that game’s official instructions before trying either.
