To show a waiting screen between church services, keep the YouTube broadcast live and switch your encoder’s output from the service program to a prepared holding slide or looped video. Switch back when the next service begins. Clicking End Stream ends the broadcast; an intermission scene is part of a continuous live feed.

Choose between one continuous stream and separate service pages

Workflow What viewers see When to use it
One continuous broadcast with a holding scene The same live watch page remains active, showing the holding output between services. Use this when you want viewers to stay on one URL through the break.
Separate scheduled streams Each service has its own scheduled watch page. YouTube Live Redirect can send viewers from the ended stream to another live stream or a Premiere. Use this when each service needs a distinct page. Set up the Premiere before the live stream if it is the redirect destination.
Change or remove the archive This affects the replay after the event, not the image shown during a live break. Use this if the concern is that a completed service replay remains visible on the channel.

YouTube documents scheduled encoder streams and Live Redirect, but reusing a stream key does not itself make separate services one continuous broadcast. The stream key identifies the encoder connection; continuity depends on keeping the broadcast active.

Set up a holding scene before the service

  1. Prepare the holding output. In your encoder, create a scene or output using a church-approved holding image or looped announcement video. Mute its audio, or use background audio your church is properly licensed to play. YouTube does not prescribe a particular holding-screen design or duration.
  2. Rehearse both transitions. Test switching from the live camera or program scene to the holding output and back. YouTube recommends checking the preview before starting and testing and monitoring the stream. Verify that the holding image fills the output and that audio behaves as intended.
  3. Start the broadcast and confirm the preview. Connect the encoder using the scheduled stream’s setup and stream key, then check the YouTube preview before going live. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover stream setup and monitoring; the scene change itself is performed in your encoder.
  4. Keep the broadcast active during the interval. Switch the encoder output to the holding scene. Do not click End Stream just to create a break: that ends the current broadcast workflow rather than leaving a live waiting image.
  5. Return to the service program. When the next service is ready, switch the encoder output back to the live camera or program scene.
  6. End the final broadcast. After the last service, end the stream on YouTube, then stop the encoder. YouTube Help’s “YouTube live streaming tips” says: “After your event has stopped on YouTube, stop the encoder.”

The holding-scene workflow is an operational implementation of YouTube’s encoder workflow, not a special YouTube holding-screen feature. The cited YouTube instructions do not promise that a stream can remain active indefinitely or that every encoder handles scene changes identically, so rehearse with the encoder your church uses.

Manage the replay separately from the live break

YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. After the event, YouTube Studio lets you change the archive’s visibility or delete the video. These are post-event controls: making a replay private or deleting it does not create a waiting screen between services.

  • CLOSED CAPTIONS, TIMECODE & REST API – Supports embedding CEA-608 and CEA-708 closed captions in live RTMP streams, source timecode over RTMP and SRT, and offers a REST API over Ethernet for external HTTP control — ideal for broadcast automation and accessibility-compliant workflows.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your church’s inter-service programming can be a prepared recording rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo can keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It is not a way to broadcast a camera, and it does not replace a live service program.
