In OBS, turn on Loop for a single-file Media Source, or use a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist enabled for several clips. If the story should play only once, prepare a second scene—such as a calm holding card or a live storyteller—and switch to it before the clip ends. The video ending and the YouTube broadcast ending are separate events, so check the broadcast controls in YouTube Live Control Room too.
Choose what should happen at the end of the story
Decide whether you want the video to repeat, move to another clip, or hand over to a live or holding scene. Set that behavior in OBS before going live; do not rely on the clip’s final frame to keep the screen populated.
| What you want | OBS approach | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one story video | Media Source with Loop enabled | Confirm the file restarts as intended. |
| Cycle through several videos | VLC Video source with a playlist and Loop Playlist enabled | Choose a fixed order or shuffle, and confirm VLC is installed. |
| Stop the video but keep the program intentional | Switch to a prepared alternate scene before the clip finishes | Use a holding card, live storyteller, or planned transition rather than depending on the final frame. |
Set up one video to repeat in OBS
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene containing the story video.
- Select the video file. OBS documents common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM, as well as audio files.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source settings if the file should restart automatically after playback ends.
- Preview the scene and let the file reach its end. Verify that playback starts again and that the transition is suitable for a children’s story.
Use a playlist for multiple stories
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS’s VLC Video source requires it.
- Add a VLC Video source and build the playlist of clips you want to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist to cycle through the playlist after it reaches the end.
- Choose whether the playlist order stays fixed or shuffles, then preview the transition between clips and the return to the beginning.
Prepare a fallback scene if the video should play once
For a one-time reading, make an alternate scene before the stream begins. It could show the storyteller speaking live, display a calm holding card, or provide a planned transition to the next activity. OBS can hide a Media Source when its playback ends, so the final frame is not a dependable fallback.
Switch scenes before the clip finishes if you want to avoid a blank or unintended screen. Rehearse the handoff so the next scene is ready and the transition fits the pace of the story.

Keep the YouTube broadcast state separate from OBS playback
A media source ending does not by itself tell you whether the YouTube broadcast is still live. Check the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and review its separate stream controls, including auto-start and auto-stop. Confirm the intended broadcast behavior before going live and monitor the live status independently of the clip or playlist.
Know the child-audience and age rules
- YouTube says creators must be at least 16 to livestream. It also says streams featuring 13–15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may have live chat disabled, and the account may temporarily lose access to live chat or other features. See YouTube’s age requirements and restrictions.
- If a stream is designated made for kids, YouTube disables live chat and live chat replay, and personalized ads are disabled on live streams and Premieres. Plan interaction and monetization accordingly; see YouTube’s made-for-kids guidance.
If you mean a YouTube player embedded on a page
The YouTube IFrame Player API has a loop parameter for an embedded player. To loop a single video, the playlist parameter must be set to that same video’s ID. This is an embedded-player setting, not an OBS source or encoder setting. See the YouTube IFrame Player API documentation.

Troubleshoot a video that ends or a stream that stops
| What you see | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The same clip ends and does not restart | Media Source playback setting | Open the source settings and confirm Loop is enabled; preview the source through the end again. |
| The playlist finishes instead of starting over | VLC Video playlist setting | Confirm Loop Playlist is enabled, VLC is installed, and the playlist contains the intended files. |
| The screen becomes blank when a one-time clip ends | Scene handoff | Switch to a prepared alternate scene before playback ends; do not depend on the ended source’s final frame. |
| The video ends and YouTube also stops the broadcast | Broadcast controls, separate from source playback | Check the stream and auto-start/auto-stop controls in YouTube Live Control Room. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube storytelling stream that should keep running without a home computer, StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and streams to YouTube only. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
