If your source folder is empty, looping cannot keep the program going: OBS can repeat only a readable file or playlist. Switch to a fallback scene that uses no files from that folder, then restore authorized media and verify YouTube is receiving the encoder feed before returning to the playlist. If you have prepared videos but want to avoid leaving a computer on, a cloud service can play those files; it cannot replace missing content.
What an empty source folder means for a live stream
A loop setting repeats existing media; it does not create a video or substitute for a missing file. OBS Media Source has a Loop option for a single file, while VLC Video Source can loop a playlist. If the file is absent, unreadable, or the playlist has no usable items, those settings alone do not provide replacement programming. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
Your encoder feed and your program content are separate concerns. YouTube’s stream key connects the encoder to the live broadcast. The key can remain valid while the video source fails, so check both the scene playing in OBS and the feed status in YouTube Live Control Room.
Switch to a fallback scene that needs no missing files
- Create a separate scene in OBS. In the Scenes panel, add a scene such as “Emergency slate.” Add a background color and text explaining that programming is temporarily unavailable and asking viewers to check back. These sources do not depend on the empty media directory.
- Prepare optional fallback audio separately. If silence is unsuitable, use a separately stored audio file that you own or are authorized to broadcast. Do not assume an empty video folder contains playable audio.
- Switch to the fallback scene when the playlist ends or fails. A static slate can keep a visual signal available while you fix the playlist, provided OBS, the computer, power, and network remain available. This is a practical setup using OBS scene sources, not a feature that automatically repairs missing media.
- Check YouTube’s incoming feed. Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the encoder feed is being received; inspect stream health after switching scenes. YouTube documents encoder connection and auto-start/auto-stop controls in Manage live stream settings.
Restore the playlist safely
- Put usable, authorized media back in the source directory. Use recordings you own or have permission to broadcast. A cloud or local workflow does not remove your responsibility to have rights to the material.
- Check each replacement file before relying on it. Confirm it opens and plays through, with expected audio and video. Look for missing audio, damaged frames, long black sections, or format inconsistencies that could interrupt a 24/7 playlist.
- Update the OBS source or playlist. Confirm the source points to the correct file or playlist entries, then verify the relevant loop setting: Media Source’s Loop for a file, or the VLC source’s playlist loop option for a playlist.
- Test the restored scene and monitor the feed. Return to the playlist only after the media plays correctly. Check YouTube Live Control Room for incoming feed and stream-health indications.
Check the stream key if YouTube is not receiving video
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat yours as a secret: do not share it or publish it. Verify that OBS is configured with the intended YouTube stream key and stream URL. If you suspect the key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement, as described in YouTube’s stream settings help.

Choose a way to bridge the gap
| Option | Best fit | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| OBS fallback scene | You need manual scene switching, overlays, or local control while sourcing replacement media. | A running computer, configured encoder, network connection, and power. |
| Cloud playlist streaming | You already have prepared files and want playback without keeping a local encoding computer online. | Uploaded media, a valid YouTube destination and key, and the provider’s service and limits. Cloud delivery does not create replacement content. |
| Stop the broadcast until media returns | You cannot provide a useful fallback and would rather not show an outage slate. | The broadcast will not remain live during the gap; check the YouTube event settings before stopping. |
None of these options guarantees uninterrupted availability. A local setup can lose power or connectivity; cloud delivery can still be affected by service interruptions, an invalid key, or source-file problems. Looping Stream’s service and guide describe its own cloud workflow and limitations; those statements are the provider’s, not independent reliability testing: product page and guide to streaming prerecorded videos on YouTube.
