For the strongest separation from online services, write in a paper notebook or use an app that keeps writing and AI processing on your device. Cloud sync, backups, and chatbot connections create additional data paths, so check how each works before recording sensitive details. “Encrypted” alone does not tell you whether a provider can access your entries, whether backups expose metadata, or whether you can recover a forgotten password.
Choose by data path, not by the word “private”
Privacy depends on where an entry goes, how it is protected, and what happens if you lose access. Separate these questions when comparing a journaling method:
- Writing: Can you create and read entries without an internet connection, and where are they stored?
- Encryption: Is data encrypted on the device, during transfer, or end-to-end so the sync provider cannot read it? Who controls the key?
- Sync and backup: Are these optional? What content and metadata leave the device?
- AI: Does analysis run on-device, or is text sent to an AI provider?
- Access: Can you export entries, restore a backup, and recover a forgotten password?
These are distinct protections. An app can store entries locally but still send data through an enabled integration; an encrypted cloud backup can still reveal some metadata; and encryption can make recovery impossible if the key is lost.
App options: what the publishers say
The details below are publisher descriptions, not results of independent audits or hands-on security tests. The cited documentation does not establish a complete platform, price, or audit comparison.

What “offline” and “encrypted” actually protect
Offline writing limits network exposure
If an app works without a network and stores writing on the device, entries do not need to travel to a cloud service during writing. Moodiary’s guide says it works entirely offline and keeps writing on the device. It also describes optional sync and configurable third-party services, so the offline claim should not be read as saying every possible configuration has no network path. Check which features you enable.
Encryption depends on where it happens and who holds the key
Encryption at rest protects stored files from being read directly without the key, but it does not by itself mean a cloud provider cannot decrypt synced data. End-to-end encryption is intended to keep the key from the sync provider; verify how the app describes key ownership and recovery. Mirror’s policy describes a password-derived local database key and says that losing the password prevents recovery. That is a real security-versus-recoverability trade-off, not a guarantee against a compromised or unlocked device.

Backups can reveal more than their encrypted contents
For Mirror, the publisher says the Google Drive database backup is encrypted, while its separate description file is not. That file’s counts, versions, backup time, and salt are metadata rather than journal text, but they can still disclose information about the journal. For any app, inspect what is backed up, whether the backup is optional, and whether you can restore it without relying on a password you might lose.
Using an AI chatbot is a different privacy choice
A chatbot connection is not equivalent to offline journaling: the service processes a conversation online even where account controls limit training use. OpenAI’s policy, updated March 13, 2026, says content from individual services may be used to train models. It describes opting out, after which new conversations are not used for training, and Temporary Chat, which does not appear in history, use or create memories, or get used to train models. The policy also says business products and API inputs and outputs are not used for training by default unless the organization opts in. These are OpenAI-specific policy statements; they do not establish that processing is offline or that no retention occurs. Do not assume another chatbot has the same rules. Read OpenAI’s policy.

Mirror takes a different approach according to its publisher: its AI features run on-device, and the policy says journal text is not sent to an AI service. The trade-off stated by the publisher is an initial model download of about 2.5 GB. That claim does not establish that every app feature or optional backup is offline.

A paper journal has no digital service processing its contents and needs no account, sync setting, or AI provider. It also has no automatic encrypted backup or password recovery. Protecting it means controlling physical access, storage, and disposal; a notebook can be lost, read by someone nearby, or damaged. A paper notebook is an offline option, not a security-tested guarantee.

A practical checklist before writing sensitive entries
- Decide what must stay off the internet. If that is a firm requirement, choose paper or keep an app’s sync, backup, and third-party integrations disabled.
- Read the storage and encryption details. Identify whether encryption is local, in transit, or end-to-end, and who controls the key.
- Review every network feature. Check sync, cloud backup, AI, weather, maps, diagnostics, and crash reporting. Do not infer that journal text is never transmitted just because the app supports offline writing.
- Plan for recovery and export. Confirm available export formats and backup restoration steps. If the password cannot be reset, decide how you will keep it safe before relying on the journal.
- Protect the device and exported files. Local-first storage does not prevent access through an unlocked or compromised device, a weak password, or an unprotected export.
- Minimize what you share with a chatbot. If using one, review that provider’s current privacy controls and avoid sending details you would not want processed by its service.
