To join a Steam Playtest, open the game’s main Steam store page and select its Playtest signup option. If signup is limited, this requests access but does not admit you immediately; check the same store page for your status, and watch for an email from Steam when you are added. Even after admission, the build may not currently be playable.
How to request access to a Steam Playtest

Open the Steam store page for the game you want to test. Signup appears on the base game’s page; a Playtest does not have its own separate store page. Steam’s Playtest documentation explains the setup.

Select the Playtest signup option. Steam’s documentation calls this action “Join the Playtest.”

Follow the page’s status to understand what happens next: with limited signup, you have requested access and must wait for admission; with open signup, you are added automatically when you request access.

Does requesting access mean you are in?
Limited signup
Limited signup is the default. Your request joins a pool, and the developer admits players in batches. Steam says selection from that pool is random, so a pending request is not an error and does not guarantee admission. Developers may also limit admission by country for server capacity or latency reasons. Steam’s Playtest documentation describes these controls.
Open signup
With open signup, requesting access automatically adds you. If the developer switches signup from limited to open, pending requests also begin to be accepted, generally within a few minutes.
Where to check whether you got access
Return to the game’s base Steam store page and check the Playtest status shown there. Steam also emails you when you are added to a Playtest you requested. The status on the page is useful if you have not seen an email; check your email folders as well if you expected a notification. Steam’s official documentation identifies both the store page and email as ways to see admission.
Why you may have access but still be unable to play
Admission and launch availability are separate. The developer controls whether the Playtest build is marked playable, independently of whether its page accepts new signups. A Playtest can therefore take signups while its build cannot launch, or stay playable after signups close. Steam does not email users when the build changes between playable and non-playable. Check the game’s Steam announcements for timing updates and revisit its store page. See Steam’s Playtest documentation and Testing On Steam.

If there is no Playtest signup option
The developer may have hidden or disabled public signup, or may be distributing access through Steam Playtest keys instead. If the developer gives you a key, use that route; do not pay a third party for access. Steam says Playtests are free and that access or keys must not be sold. A key is not automatically revoked just because the app is marked not playable, though the build still has to be playable to launch. Steam’s Playtest documentation covers signup visibility and keys.

A Steam Playtest is separate from the base game for records such as playtime and wishlist status. Treat the Playtest as its own testing experience rather than assuming activity or wishlist changes carry over to the base game. Steam describes this separation in its Playtest documentation.
