Put smart-home devices on a separate network segment from trusted computers and phones. For many homes, a router’s guest Wi-Fi is the simplest option; an IoT network or a VLAN-based setup can offer more control if the equipment supports it. Check the exact router model’s documentation: a “guest” label alone does not prove that devices are isolated from your main network.

What network isolation does—and what it does not do

Network segmentation separates devices into groups and limits which groups can communicate. If a smart plug, camera, or other IoT device is compromised, separation can make it harder for that device to reach trusted computers or other network resources. NIST describes segmentation as a way to limit the spread of a compromise, not as a guarantee that a device cannot be attacked.

Isolation is different from simply giving a device a different Wi-Fi name. The router must enforce rules that block unwanted traffic between the separate network and your main network. Devices on the isolated network may also need access to the internet or to particular local services, so overly restrictive settings can disrupt features.

Choose guest Wi-Fi, an IoT network, or VLANs

Option Setup and support Control What to verify
Guest Wi-Fi Often the simplest starting point; many home routers provide a preconfigured guest network. Usually less customizable than a VLAN design. Available controls vary by router. Confirm that the router blocks guest clients from reaching the main network, and check whether guest devices can reach one another if that matters to you.
Dedicated IoT network Available on some routers and mesh systems; the setup and capabilities are model-specific. May offer IoT-focused settings, but the name alone does not establish what traffic is blocked. Read the exact model’s documentation for rules governing access to the main network, other IoT devices, and local services.
VLAN-based segmentation Requires compatible networking equipment and configuration, typically including routing and access rules. More customizable: rules can specify which network groups and services may communicate. Verify that the router, switches, and access points support the intended VLAN setup, and check the resulting rules rather than relying on network labels.

NIST characterizes guest Wi-Fi as a simple option and VLANs with routing and access rules as a more customizable approach. The right choice depends on your equipment and how much control you need; a more complex setup also requires correct configuration.

Set up a separate network using your router’s controls

Router menus differ by manufacturer, model, app, and firmware version, so there is no reliable universal menu path. Use the manual or support documentation for your exact router and firmware rather than following instructions for a similar-looking model.

  1. Check the router’s capabilities. Look in its manual or administration app for guest Wi-Fi, an IoT network, VLAN support, and settings that control access between networks. Confirm the documentation applies to your exact model and firmware.
  2. Enable the separate network. Follow the manufacturer’s setup instructions. Use a strong, unique Wi-Fi password and current security settings offered by the router.
  3. Check the isolation rules. Look for wording such as blocking access to the local network or main network. Determine whether the setting blocks only access from guests to the main network, or also blocks communication among guest devices. Do not assume one behavior implies the other.
  4. Connect smart-home devices to the separate network. Follow each device’s setup instructions. Some devices or setup processes may rely on local-network discovery or communication with a phone; compatibility is not universal, so check the device documentation if onboarding or features fail.
  5. Check the functions you rely on. After moving devices, try their essential controls and automations, such as app access, voice-assistant control, discovery, and device-to-device routines where applicable. If a function stops working, consult the router and device documentation before loosening network restrictions.

Verify isolation and account for router-specific weaknesses

A feature name is not proof that the router correctly enforces isolation. In NIST’s National Vulnerability Database, CVE-2025-46635 describes a flaw in the Tenda RX2 Pro that allowed a guest user to access other network resources after setting a static IP address in a non-guest subnet. This finding concerns that model and vulnerability; it does not establish that all guest networks have the same weakness.

  • Keep router firmware current and review the vendor’s security advisories for your exact model.
  • Check current model-specific documentation for what the guest or IoT network can reach and for any known isolation issues.
  • Do not treat changing a device’s network settings as a substitute for router-enforced access rules.
  • If the vendor’s documentation does not clearly establish the isolation behavior you need, choose a documented configuration or equipment that supports it.

When a more advanced IoT control is relevant

Manufacturer Usage Description

Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) can provide more granular controls than placing devices in a broad network group. Where the device and network support MUD, the network can allow communications the IoT device needs and prohibit other communications. It is capability-dependent, not a setting available on every home router or supported by every device.

Trusted device onboarding

NIST’s final SP 1800-36, published November 25, 2025, describes trusted network-layer onboarding: verifying device and network identity and posture before providing network credentials. This is an advanced capability, not a universal consumer-router feature. It addresses how devices join and are managed; it does not remove the need to configure suitable network access rules.

When to consider different networking equipment

Consider replacing or adding networking equipment only if your current router cannot provide the separation and access controls you need. Before choosing equipment, confirm the exact model’s documented guest-network or VLAN capabilities and whether its firmware supports the relevant settings. NISTIR 8425A, published September 10, 2024, sets out cybersecurity capabilities for consumer-grade routers; it is a reference for evaluating router security, not a tested recommendation of a particular product.

Segmentation is one layer of protection, not a substitute for other security measures. NIST’s December 17, 2025 CSWP 34 discusses segmentation among controls for telehealth smart-home integration; it does not establish a universal home-router setup or guarantee protection for every smart-home use.
