To play an open-world Steam game with friends, first check which multiplayer method that particular game supports: an online lobby, a Steam overlay invite, Remote Play Together, or a listen or dedicated server. Steam provides the friends list and overlay, but the game sets the rules for joining, ownership, saves, privacy, and cross-play. The usual starting point is to add your friend in Steam, launch the game, create or load a multiplayer session, and send an invite from the game or its supported Steam overlay.
Before choosing a route, ask two questions: does the title offer online co-op or only local co-op, and should the world exist only while you play or remain available on a separate server? Those answers help distinguish a simple invite from Remote Play Together or server hosting. There is no hardware purchase or router change required just to use Steam’s ordinary friend-invitation flow.
How do I invite friends on Steam in a co-op game?
Start with the game’s own multiplayer or co-op menu; use Shift+Tab only if the game supports Steam overlay invitations. The exact steps and whether a friend can join an existing world depend on the game.
- Add your friend: Open Steam Friends & Chat and add the other player. Steam limited accounts can receive friend invitations but cannot send them.
- Start the game: Look for a menu option such as Multiplayer, Co-op, Host, Create Session, New World, or Continue/Load World. Menu names and what happens to a saved world when multiplayer is enabled are game-specific.
- Set access: If the game offers friends-only or invite-only access, choose it before opening the session. A private setting in Steam does not replace the game’s lobby, party, password, or server permissions.
- Send the invite: Use the game’s player list or invite menu. If Steam overlay invitations are supported, press Shift+Tab, select your friend, and choose the available invite command.
- Have your friend accept: They may need to accept a Steam notification, use a Join Game action, or follow an in-game prompt. The game determines which route is available.
If an invite option is missing, try the game’s own invite menu rather than assuming the overlay is broken. Steam says the Community Overlay provides access to Steam community features while playing, but games implement its features differently. The default overlay shortcut is Shift+Tab; the game must support the relevant invite feature for it to work.

Steam Support describes the overlay as “an in-game interface that allows access to many Steam Community features while playing games.” That makes it a convenient place to reach friends and supported invites, not a universal multiplayer switch. If you cannot send a friend request because your Steam account is limited, you can still receive an invitation from another player; have an established friend send the request instead.
Once you are in a voice chat or coordinating a session, Steam Friends & Chat also supports voice chat. A USB gaming headset with a microphone is an optional convenience, not a requirement for inviting someone or joining a game.
Which multiplayer method should I use?
Use the method the game explicitly supports. An online lobby is the ordinary route when a title provides a host-and-join flow; Remote Play Together is a separate option for supported local co-op; server hosting is a more advanced branch.
| Method | When it fits | Ownership and availability | Setup and world access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online co-op lobby | The game has an online Multiplayer, Host, or Join flow. | Whether each player needs a copy and whether cross-play is supported are set by the game. | Usually begins in the game’s own menus. The game decides whether the host must stay online and how saves work. |
| Steam overlay invitation | The game exposes Steam invites or join actions through the overlay. | Does not itself change the game’s ownership, player-limit, or mode rules. | Open Shift+Tab and use the available friend or invite control. Integration varies by game. |
| Remote Play Together | The Steam store page or support material identifies the game as supporting Remote Play Together, and the intended mode is local co-op. | Steam says invited friends can join a supported local co-op session without owning or launching the game themselves. | Streams a local co-op session remotely; it is not a general online-server or ownership bypass. |
| Listen server | The game supports creating a server hosted by a player’s computer. | Game-specific; Steam’s hosting documentation does not establish each title’s ownership or cross-play rules. | May involve game-specific firewall and router configuration. The host computer runs the session. |
| Dedicated server | The game provides a separate server-hosting model, often when a persistent world is needed. | Game-specific; server access controls may include a password. | Requires the title’s dedicated-server setup and its own access and visibility settings. |
Compare the choices on more than convenience. An in-game host-and-invite flow is generally the simplest starting point. A player-hosted listen server can involve network configuration, while a dedicated server is a separate setup with its own account and access controls. For persistence, check whether your save is available only while the host is playing or whether a dedicated server maintains the world. Those are title-specific behaviors, not guarantees attached to Steam.
Also separate ownership from the invitation method. A Steam overlay invite does not waive the game’s purchase, account, player-limit, or cross-play rules. Supported Remote Play Together is the stated exception for a local co-op session, but it does not convert that session into online co-op or provide additional server features. For privacy, use the game’s invite-only, friends-only, lobby, or password settings rather than relying on Steam profile status.
Online co-op and the Steam overlay
For online co-op, follow the game’s lobby or host-and-join flow, then invite friends from the game if possible. The overlay can be convenient for friends, chat, and supported game invitations, but it is an interface—not a universal multiplayer system. If the game does not provide an invite command through it, use the game’s own multiplayer menu or instructions.
In practice, the overlay may show a friend list or a game-provided invite or join control, but the available actions vary. The game may require you to enter a lobby before it will expose an invitation option. It may also have a separate party or session menu. Do not assume that opening Shift+Tab creates a lobby, changes a world from single-player to multiplayer, or makes a private session visible to friends.

Remote Play Together
Remote Play Together is intended for supported local co-op sessions streamed to a friend. Steam’s documented flow is to launch the game, make sure the friend is logged in on a supported device, open the overlay with Shift+Tab, right-click the friend, and select Remote Play Together. The friend does not need to own or launch the game for this supported session, according to Steam. That exception does not mean every open-world title supports the feature, nor does it turn a local co-op mode into an online world with different server rules.
Steam Support explains: “With Remote Play Together, you can invite your Steam Friends to join your local co-op sessions remotely, without having to own or launch the game themselves.” Check the title’s store page or support material before planning around this option. If the game is built around an online server rather than local co-op, Remote Play Together may not be the right path even if the game has other multiplayer features.
Because this method streams a local session, it is different from having each player connect to an online lobby or dedicated world. The host launches and runs the game, and the guest joins the supported local co-op session remotely. Steam recommends a wired network for the best Remote Play streaming experience; an optional Cat 6 Ethernet cable can provide a wired connection, but it cannot fix matchmaking, account, privacy, or server-configuration problems.
Listen and dedicated servers
A listen server runs on the host’s computer; a dedicated server is a separate hosting model with its own setup and controls. They are not interchangeable with a standard invitation. The game determines its server creation steps, how other players find it, what network settings it needs, and whether the world remains available when a player-host leaves. Use instructions for the exact game’s server model rather than adapting another game’s example.
Steam’s listen-server guidance describes a host computer and potentially game-specific firewall and router configuration. Dedicated-server documentation describes a separate model, including server account setup and private-server controls such as a password. If persistence is your priority, compare the title’s supported server choices and check who can access the world, how it is protected, and what happens when the host is offline. Do not assume a dedicated server is required for ordinary co-op or that every game offers one.
How do I host an open-world multiplayer game on Steam?
Use the game’s Host, Create Session, or equivalent option if it offers one, and decide access and save behavior before inviting anyone. There is no single Steam-wide procedure for turning an open-world save into a multiplayer world.
- Check the game’s multiplayer instructions: Confirm whether multiplayer works with a new world, an existing save, or both, and whether the game requires a particular mode or account setup.
- Create or load the world: Choose the option the game documents for hosting. A Continue or Load option may not automatically make a single-player world joinable.
- Choose access controls: Set the lobby, party, or server to invite-only or friends-only if available. For a dedicated server, use the game’s documented password or other privacy controls.
- Invite players: Use the game’s invite feature or its supported Steam overlay integration. Give friends any game-specific information they need to find the session.
- Confirm persistence expectations: Check whether the world is available only while the host is playing or is maintained by a dedicated server. Save ownership and access rules differ by title.
Steam’s listen-server guidance describes a host computer and potentially game-specific firewall and router configuration. Dedicated-server documentation describes a separate model, including server account setup and private-server controls. Neither establishes a universal hosting recipe for every Steam game.

Before inviting a group, make sure everyone is aiming for the same session type. A friend may expect to join your online world, while you may have opened a local co-op session or a private server. Tell players whether they should accept an in-game invite, join through Steam, or use the game’s server browser or password entry. Any required account, region, version, or cross-play details should come from that game’s own instructions.

Only in a supported Remote Play Together session does Steam’s documentation say an invited friend can join without owning or launching the game. For ordinary online co-op, the game’s own rules determine whether every player needs a copy.
Before buying or inviting, check the game’s Steam store page or support documentation for Remote Play Together support and the intended multiplayer mode. Do not assume that a game with online co-op also supports Remote Play Together, or that a Remote Play session permits online-server features, more players, or cross-play beyond the game’s own rules.
Likewise, the Steam overlay is not a way to share ownership. If the game requires each participant to own it for online play, a normal invite does not change that requirement. Verify whether the feature you plan to use is specifically Remote Play Together and whether the game’s local co-op mode supports the number of players you intend to invite.
How do I use Shift+Tab to invite someone?
Shift+Tab opens the Steam Community Overlay by default, but it only provides an invitation route when the game implements the relevant feature. If it works for the game, open the overlay during play, select the friend, and use the invite or join control shown there.
Recommended Free Tools
- Launch the game and enter the session or lobby you want to share.
- Press Shift+Tab to open the overlay. If nothing happens, check the global and per-game overlay settings below.
- Choose the friend and look for the game-provided invite or join action. For Remote Play Together, Steam’s documented action is to right-click the friend and select Remote Play Together, when supported.
- Ask the friend to accept the invitation and follow the game’s prompt. If there is no invite action, use the game’s own multiplayer or invite menu.
If your friend is not listed as available, check Friends & Chat presence before repeatedly sending the invite. A person who appears offline or invisible may not be easy to reach through the expected invite flow. Coordinate with them another way and ask them to confirm their presence and that they are signed into the intended Steam account.
Why can’t my friend join my Steam game?
Check the friend connection, game mode, overlay, and the game’s own session rules in that order. A Steam invitation can be delivered successfully while a game-specific restriction still prevents joining.

- Check Steam presence: Confirm the other player is actually on your Friends list and not appearing offline or invisible. Friends & Chat manages friend relationships and online presence.
- Confirm the mode: Make sure both players are trying to use the same route—online co-op versus local co-op through Remote Play Together.
- Check overlay settings: In Steam, open Settings > In-game and enable the overlay. Then check Library > the game’s Properties > General for the per-game overlay setting.
- Try the game’s invitation menu: If the overlay opens but has no invite button, use Multiplayer or Invite Friends inside the game. Overlay features vary by title.
- Check game-specific requirements: Consult the game’s documentation for server access, privacy, version, account, region, and cross-play rules. These are not universal Steam requirements.
- Investigate networking only when relevant: For a documented listen or dedicated server, check the game’s firewall, router, server visibility, password, and required-port instructions.
Steam’s basic overlay troubleshooting suggestions include restarting Steam and verifying local files. These may help with an overlay problem, but they do not resolve a game-specific matchmaking restriction or server configuration issue.
Separate an invitation problem from a connection problem. If Shift+Tab does not open, first check the overlay settings and restart Steam if needed. If the overlay opens but has no invite command, try the game’s own menu. If the invite arrives but the friend cannot enter the world, inspect the game’s access permissions, supported mode, version, account, region, and cross-play rules. If those checks point to a server setup issue, follow that title’s instructions before changing the router.

Do I need port forwarding for Steam co-op?
Not simply because the game is on Steam. Whether firewall or router changes are needed depends on the game, server type, network design, and the traffic involved.
Steam’s networking documentation distinguishes game traffic from Remote Play and other Steam functions; it does not provide one port rule for all co-op games. Start with the exact game’s official networking instructions and identify whether you are using an ordinary online lobby, Remote Play Together, a listen server, or a dedicated server. Only follow port-forwarding directions that match that title and hosting model. Do not reuse a port example from Valve Source-server instructions for an unrelated open-world game.
For a regular online lobby or Remote Play Together session, do not assume that the same network steps used by a player-hosted server apply. If the title explicitly documents firewall permission or router configuration for its listen or dedicated server, use its named ports and server model, and review server visibility and password controls at the same time. Guessing a port or forwarding a generic example can leave the problem unresolved while changing network exposure unnecessarily.
What can improve voice chat or Remote Play streaming?
A headset with a microphone is optional for coordinating with friends; it is not required to send a game invite. Steam Friends & Chat supports voice chat, so players can use it if they want to coordinate outside the game.
For Remote Play streaming, Steam recommends a wired network for the best experience. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one optional way to make a wired connection, but it cannot fix game-specific matchmaking, account, privacy, or server configuration problems. Neither accessory is a prerequisite for standard invitations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a friend join my saved world after I invite them?
Not necessarily. Whether an existing save can be opened to co-op, and whether the host must remain in the game, are rules set by the individual title; check its save and multiplayer documentation before relying on a saved world as a shared session.
Can I invite a friend who appears offline on Steam?
Steam Friends & Chat lets users manage their online presence, including appearing offline or invisible. If your friend is not visibly available, coordinate another way and ask them to check their presence before troubleshooting the game invite.
Does Steam voice chat work while I play a game?
Steam Friends & Chat supports voice chat, so friends can coordinate through Steam rather than relying on a game’s built-in voice system. Whether game audio and voice work together as desired can depend on each player’s device and settings.
Will restarting Steam fix an invitation that arrives but cannot connect?
Restarting Steam is among Steam’s basic overlay troubleshooting suggestions, but it is not a general fix for failed game connections. If the invitation arrives and joining fails, check the title’s session permissions, version, account, region, cross-play, and server guidance.
Can a limited Steam account send a friend request?
Steam limited accounts can receive friend invitations but cannot send them. If you cannot send the request, ask the other player to add or invite you instead.
Is Remote Play Together the same as online co-op?
No. Remote Play Together streams a supported local co-op session to a friend. It does not make every online mode available, bypass a game’s server rules, or change its player-limit and cross-play requirements.
Does the host have to stay online?
That depends on the game and hosting model. A player-hosted session may exist only while the host is playing, while a dedicated server is a separate model. Check the title’s documentation for its persistence and save rules.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do I need a headset or Ethernet cable to invite friends?
No. A headset is optional for voice coordination, and a wired connection is Steam’s recommendation for the best Remote Play streaming experience, not a requirement for standard invitations.
The Bottom Line
Start with the game’s own online co-op or host menu, set access in the game, then invite friends through its supported controls. Use Shift+Tab only when the title supports Steam overlay invites; use Remote Play Together only for a supported local co-op session. Before changing network settings, confirm the mode and check the exact game’s rules for ownership, saves, privacy, cross-play, persistence, and server requirements.
