The right option depends on the app, the trigger and action you need, who should have access, and your Workspace’s plan and permissions.
Choose the right ClickUp integration method
Start by checking whether ClickUp supports the app and behavior you need. A direct App Center connection is suited to linking an account and, for some apps, searching its files in ClickUp. Native Integration Automations handle supported trigger-and-action workflows. Zapier can connect ClickUp to other services when its available triggers and actions fit. The API is the flexible route when you need to build a custom integration.
- App Center: connect an external account to ClickUp; some integrations support Connected Search.
- Integration Automations: automate repetitive work between ClickUp and supported apps using triggers, conditions, and actions.
- Zapier: configure a no-code workflow across ClickUp and other services, subject to the integration’s available events and constraints.
- ClickUp API: build a custom integration when you need code-level control.
Before setting anything up, confirm that the intended app, behavior, user role, permissions, and plan are supported. ClickUp’s App Center instructions, Automation documentation, and API getting-started guide describe different capabilities and constraints.
Connect an app through the ClickUp App Center
Use the App Center when you want to connect an external account directly to ClickUp. Depending on the app, the connection may also enable Connected Search, which lets users search for files from that app in ClickUp.

Personal or Workspace connection?
A Personal connection links the external account to one ClickUp user; other people do not get access to that data through ClickUp. A Workspace connection can make external files available to everyone in that Workspace for search. Only Workspace owners and admins can set up Workspace connections, and availability depends on the app and plan.
If you cannot see the Personal tab or the Connect button, your Personal Integrations permission may be restricted. Ask a Workspace owner or admin to check your access. Before changing an organization-wide policy, check the app’s behavior: some app features rely on personal connections.

Set up a native Integration Automation
ClickUp Integration Automations connect repetitive work in ClickUp with supported apps. Examples include creating a task when a Google Calendar event is created, posting to Slack when due dates change, updating a task to In Production after a GitHub pull request is merged, or sending email when a task is unblocked.
ClickUp’s documentation lists Bugsnag, Calendly, Email, GitHub, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Gmail, HubSpot, Slack, Twilio, and Outlook Mail among the supported apps. App support does not guarantee that every trigger or action is available to every user; features and limits vary by plan and role.

- Open the relevant Space, Folder, Subfolder, or List.
- Open the Automation control and choose Create Automation.
- Select an integration trigger or action, or choose a template.
- Configure the trigger, any conditions, and the actions the workflow should perform.
- Create the Automation.
For the current supported-app details and setup options, see ClickUp’s Integration Automations documentation.
Use Zapier for a no-code workflow
Consider Zapier when a direct ClickUp connection or native Automation does not cover the cross-app workflow you want. Zapier’s ClickUp integration lists triggers such as new tasks, task changes, new comments, and new time entries, along with actions such as creating or updating tasks and posting task comments. The available choices may not cover every account or workflow, so check the current options and plan limits before building around one.

- In Zapier, add a new app connection and select ClickUp.
- Authenticate in the ClickUp window and grant Zapier access if prompted.
- Choose the ClickUp trigger or action and configure the connected app and workflow.
- When prompted, provide the required Space, Folder, or List ID, then test and enable the workflow.
Zapier documents that guest users cannot use its ClickUp integration, some triggers and actions require a Space, Folder, or List ID, and ClickUp API rate limits vary by Workspace plan. Its setup page was marked updated August 12, 2025; verify the current integration options and constraints in Zapier’s ClickUp setup guide.
Build a custom integration with the ClickUp API
Use the API when the built-in connections and no-code options do not expose the behavior you need or when you need to implement the workflow in your own application. Every API request must be authenticated, as ClickUp states in its official API authentication documentation.

Quick Recap
- App support: Is the target app available as a direct connection or supported in native Integration Automations?
- Workflow behavior: Does the method expose the exact trigger and action you need?
- Access scope: Should the connection belong to one person, or does the organization need an owner- or admin-managed Workspace connection?
- Implementation effort: Can ClickUp settings or a no-code service handle the workflow, or does it require custom API work?
- Plan, role, and limits: Do the people involved have the required permissions, and does the Workspace plan support the app, Automation, API access, and expected usage?
