There is no official standalone YouTube desktop installer for Windows that works like a traditional .exe program. On a Windows laptop or desktop PC, the supported desktop-style option is to install youtube.com as a web app using Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome.
This creates a separate YouTube window with its own Start-menu entry, taskbar icon, or desktop shortcut. It still uses the browser engine and an internet connection, so it is not the same as installing a fully offline native application.
Before you install YouTube
Use a current version of Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. YouTube supports modern browsers, but Internet Explorer is no longer supported.
Be careful with Microsoft Store search results. Apps named “YouTube,” “U Tube,” or “YT Downloader” may be unofficial third-party programs. For a Windows laptop or PC, installing the official YouTube website as an Edge or Chrome web app is the safer and more reliable method.

Method 1: Install YouTube with Microsoft Edge
Edge is usually the simplest option because it is included with Windows 11.
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Visit https://www.youtube.com.
- Click the three-dot (…) menu in the upper-right corner.
- Choose More tools.
- Select Apps.
- Click Install this site as an app.
- Leave the name as YouTube, or enter a different name.
- Click Install.
Edge creates an app-style YouTube window and normally adds the app to Windows. You can then launch it from the Start menu without opening a regular browser tab first.
Another Edge installation option
When YouTube is open, Edge may display an app or install icon on the right side of the address bar. Click that icon and follow the prompts. If the icon is not visible, use the menu path above:
… > More tools > Apps > Install this site as an app

- Open Edge.
- Enter
edge://appsin the address bar and press Enter. - Find the YouTube app.
- Click Details.
- Choose Pin to taskbar, Pin to Start, or Create Desktop shortcut.
The same Details screen may also include Auto-start on device login. Leave this disabled unless you specifically want YouTube to launch when you sign in to Windows.

Method 2: Install YouTube with Google Chrome
- Open Google Chrome.
- Go to https://www.youtube.com.
- Click the three-dot (…) menu in the upper-right corner.
- Select Cast, save, and share.
- Click Install page as app….
- Confirm the installation when Chrome asks.
On some Chrome versions, an Install icon appears at the right end of the address bar. Clicking that icon opens the same web-app installation process.
Install page as app versus Create shortcut
These Chrome commands are not identical:

Use Install page as app… when it is available. Use Create shortcut only when you want a basic link or Chrome does not offer the app-install option.
Manage or create a shortcut for the Chrome app
Open chrome://apps in Chrome to view installed web apps. You can right-click YouTube and choose Create shortcut if you did not create a desktop shortcut during installation.

- Open the installed YouTube app from Start, the taskbar, or the desktop.
- Click Sign in.
- Enter your Google Account details.
The installed app uses browser-based cookies and account data. If YouTube opens signed out, sign in again inside the app window. If you use multiple browser profiles, make sure you install YouTube from the profile containing the account you normally use.
What the installed YouTube app can and cannot do
- It opens YouTube in a separate window rather than a regular browser tab.
- It can have a Start-menu entry, taskbar icon, and desktop shortcut.
- It receives interface and feature updates from YouTube’s website.
- It continues to depend on Edge or Chrome in the background.
- It normally requires an internet connection for video playback.
- It does not automatically provide offline downloads.
YouTube Premium members can download eligible videos on a computer from a supported browser. Open the video while signed in, then click Download below the video. Installing YouTube as a web app does not itself unlock this feature.

Uninstall YouTube from a Windows laptop or PC
Uninstall the Edge version
- Open Edge and enter
edge://apps. - Find YouTube and click Details.
- Select Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal.
- If offered, choose whether to delete the app’s history and data.
You can also remove it through Windows:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Find YouTube.
- Click the … button beside it and choose Uninstall.
Another option is to open Start > All apps, right-click YouTube, and select Uninstall.
Uninstall the Chrome version
- Open the installed YouTube app.
- Click the three-dot (…) menu.
- Select Uninstall YouTube.
- Click Remove.
Chrome may ask whether you also want to delete the app’s data. You can also manage installed apps from chrome://apps.

Fix common installation and playback problems
The Edge install option is missing
Confirm that you are on https://www.youtube.com, then use the complete menu path rather than waiting for an address-bar icon:
… > More tools > Apps > Install this site as an app
If the option remains unavailable, update Edge, restart the browser, and try again. On a work or school computer, an administrator may have disabled user-installed web apps with the WebAppInstallByUserEnabled policy.

YouTube is missing from Start or Windows Search
The app may be installed but not pinned. In Edge, open edge://apps, click YouTube’s Details button, and choose Pin to Start or Create Desktop shortcut. In Chrome, open chrome://apps, right-click YouTube, and create a shortcut.
The app opens with normal browser controls
You may have created a shortcut instead of a web app. In Chrome, reinstall it using … > Cast, save, and share > Install page as app…. In Edge, use … > More tools > Apps > Install this site as an app.
Videos buffer or fail to play
Update the browser and Windows, close unnecessary tabs and programs, restart the PC, and test the connection in another browser. YouTube lists approximately 500 Kbps as a general minimum, with sustained speeds of about 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD.
YouTube displays a blank or badly formatted page
Clear YouTube’s cached site data and cookies, then sign in again. In either browser, remove the stored data for YouTube from the browser’s privacy settings. Clearing cookies can sign you out and reset site-specific preferences.
The video is green or visually corrupted
Update your graphics driver first. You can also test hardware acceleration. In Chrome, open … > Settings > Advanced > System, then turn off Use hardware acceleration when available and restart Chrome. The equivalent setting is available in Edge’s system settings.

The app stops working after Edge is removed
Edge-installed web apps depend on Microsoft Edge. Keep Edge installed and updated if you use the Edge version of the YouTube app.

Is there an official YouTube app for Windows laptops and PCs?
YouTube does not provide a conventional native Windows installer for desktop computers. The recommended desktop-style solution is to install YouTube.com as a web app through Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome.
Can I install YouTube from the Microsoft Store?
Avoid assuming that a Microsoft Store listing with “YouTube” in its name is official. Unverified third-party apps may include downloaders, advertising, or unwanted software. Use the Edge or Chrome web-app method instead.

The installed app is a website-based application and normally needs internet access for playback. YouTube Premium may allow eligible videos to be downloaded through a supported browser, but installation alone does not enable offline viewing.
Will installing YouTube as an app use less RAM than a browser?
Not necessarily. The app still uses the Edge or Chrome browser engine. Its main advantage is the separate window and convenient Windows shortcut, not guaranteed lower memory usage.
Can I install YouTube on a Mac laptop?
The steps in this guide are for Windows laptops and PCs. On a Mac, you can use YouTube in Safari, Chrome, or another supported browser, and some browsers may offer their own website-app installation feature.
