Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You can run Wowza Streaming Engine on an Azure virtual machine using a preconfigured Marketplace image, then connect to its Manager, set secure credentials, and test a stream. Wowza documents separate Windows and Linux quick-starts. The Windows guide describes a Windows Server 2019 Datacenter image and a particular Engine version; Marketplace offers and versions can change, so verify the current listing before creating a VM.
Choose an Azure deployment and licensing path
The quickest documented route is a preconfigured Wowza image from Azure Marketplace; Wowza says this avoids a manual command-line installation. Another option is to deploy a suitable Azure VM and use a Wowza license you already own or obtain separately (BYOL). Wowza describes both Windows and Linux quick-starts. Choose the operating system you can administer confidently and whose procedures fit your existing tools.
The Windows guide, updated July 22, 2026, identifies Windows Server 2019 Datacenter and says the latest preconfigured image runs Wowza Streaming Engine 4.11.3. These are guide-specific details, not a guarantee about what Azure currently offers. Check the live Marketplace listing for its operating system, Engine version, licensing model, and terms before deployment. The Linux quick-start also identifies version 4.11.3 for its latest preconfigured image, but consult its current guide for Linux-specific setup details rather than transferring Windows commands or paths.
| Route | Billing described by Wowza | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace image with embedded license | Wowza describes a combined Microsoft invoice for VM runtime, storage, bandwidth, and Wowza usage. Its pricing page says paid Marketplace instances are provider-billed hourly and that an embedded license requires no separate key; confirm current offer terms. | You want a Marketplace deployment and billing convenience. |
| Bring your own license (BYOL) | Azure bills infrastructure such as VM runtime, storage, and bandwidth; Wowza may invoice separately for a subscription license. | You already have a suitable license or prefer the separate licensing arrangement. |

Prepare the VM and network
Before you create it
- Have an Azure subscription and permission to create virtual machines and network security rules.
- Decide whether to follow the Windows or Linux quick-start and whether to use an embedded license or BYOL.
- Choose an Azure region with low latency to the camera or encoder sending the live feed. Wowza gives this as its placement recommendation; audience proximity may also matter to your design.
- Select a VM size based on the workload, including expected processing and transcoding. Wowza’s Windows guide explicitly warns against its A0 size because it lacks enough CPU resources. Its dated D-series examples are not a universal sizing prescription; check current Azure availability and size resources for your workload.
Create the VM
- In Azure Marketplace, locate the current Wowza Streaming Engine offer and review its image, license terms, and supported configuration.
- Create or select a resource group, enter a VM name, and choose the region and size. For the Windows quick-start, follow the currently offered Windows image rather than assuming the guide’s Windows Server 2019 image is still listed.
- Choose disk and network settings appropriate to the deployment. Add only the inbound rules required by your ingest and playback protocols. The Windows guide says to add UDP access if an encoder sends its stream over UDP; do not open broad port ranges without a protocol-specific need.
- Where practical, restrict inbound rules to known source IP addresses. Keep Azure network security group rules aligned with the protocols and ports your encoders and viewers actually use.
- Review the VM, network, and licensing selections, then create the deployment and wait for provisioning to finish.
The quick-start guides assume familiarity with the relevant guest operating system and Wowza. For the Windows procedure, see Wowza’s Windows Azure guide; for Linux, use its Linux Azure guide.
Connect to the server and secure Manager
Windows: RDP and initial credentials
- Use Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to connect to the Windows VM with the access details configured during creation.
- In the documented Windows image, open
C:Program Files (x86)Wowza Media SystemsWowza Streaming Engineconfadmin.password. - Replace the initial Manager username and password with credentials you control. Do not leave default credentials on a publicly reachable management endpoint.
- Confirm the license state. The Windows guide says a temporary license key is preloaded; if using BYOL, replace it with the applicable subscription or perpetual key as directed by Wowza.
- Open Wowza Streaming Engine Manager at
http://[public-ip-address]:8088/enginemanager, substituting the VM’s public IP address.
Linux: use the Linux-specific procedure
Wowza’s Linux Azure quick-start documents SSH access, but the specific Linux commands and file locations should be taken from the current guide rather than inferred from the Windows steps. Follow the Linux guide’s current instructions for Manager credentials, licensing, and service access: Set up Wowza Streaming Engine for Linux on Azure.

Protect the management interface
The Windows guide’s example Manager URL uses HTTP on port 8088. Treat that as a setup path, not a production security recommendation: configure HTTPS for management and restrict access to trusted networks or administrator IPs using appropriate Azure network controls. Avoid exposing an administrative interface broadly to the public internet.
Test ingest and playback
- In Manager, use the documented Test Players workflow and the sample video or test stream to check that the Engine is responding.
- Use the VM’s public IP as the address clients need to reach. Confirm that the test player is using the public address rather than a private VM address.
- If the test player displays a private IP, Wowza notes that an Azure variable lookup can cause this behavior. Follow the guide’s documented Wowza property adjustment for that issue rather than changing unrelated network rules.
- Test with the same ingest protocol and relevant network path your encoder will use. A successful local sample playback does not by itself prove that the production encoder can reach the VM through the configured network rules.
For the Windows test-player and Azure IP guidance, see the Windows Azure setup guide.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| RDP or SSH cannot reach the VM | Access rule, address, or guest credentials are incorrect. | Verify the VM is running, the public IP is current, and the relevant Azure network security group rule permits only the required management access from your source network. |
| Encoder cannot send its feed | The selected protocol or port is not allowed through the Azure network path. | Match the inbound rule to the encoder’s actual protocol and port. If the deployment uses UDP, add the required UDP rule and restrict its source where practical. |
| Manager rejects login | Initial credentials were not replaced as expected, or the wrong VM/image procedure was followed. | For the documented Windows image, inspect and update admin.password using the guide, then connect to the Manager URL for that VM. Use the Linux guide for Linux-specific credential steps. |
| Manager or test player shows a private IP | The Windows guide identifies an Azure variable-lookup issue that can cause the test player to use a private IP. | Apply the Wowza property setting specified in the Windows guide and retest using the VM public IP. |
| Performance is inadequate | The VM may not have enough CPU or other resources for the processing workload. | Review actual workload, especially transcoding needs, and resize based on current Azure VM options. Wowza specifically warns that A0 is insufficient in its Windows guide; its historical size examples should not be treated as a current universal recommendation. |
| License activation or billing differs from expectations | The selected image or license route may have different current terms from the guide. | Check the live Marketplace offer, your Wowza entitlement, and current Wowza pricing and billing terms before changing keys or assuming which provider will invoice you. |
Stopping, deleting, and ongoing Azure costs
Stopping a VM and deleting a deployment are different actions. A stopped VM can still have associated resources, such as storage or a reserved public IP, with billing implications under current Azure terms; deleting the VM may not automatically remove every separately retained resource. Before stopping or deleting, review the resources in the Azure portal, identify which you need to keep, and check current Azure billing rules for the region and resource types you selected. The Wowza Windows guide specifically advises considering public IP and resource billing implications.
